CHERYL CONTINUES TO IMPROVE ON THE NATURAL TREATMENT AND HAS SEEN A SECOND ONCOLOGIST

Cheryl went in for her second-opinion appointment on April 5th. She had never directly criticized her original oncologist to me, but I got the sense that she was not impressed with her. I hadn’t realized how dissatisfied Cheryl was, and I don’t think she did either, until she was able to compare the first doctor with the second-opinion doctor. Day and night, she says.

Cheryl says that prior to setting up her breast surgery, the first doctor spent 12 minutes with her. That she discussed no treatment options or anything relating to the cancer, touching only on the details about the day of surgery. She certainly didn’t try to comfort Cheryl in any way.

When Cheryl pressed her for more information the doctor told her blankly that she was in a high risk group and the breast had to go; that she was a surgeon and didn’t promote other methods to fight or cope with cancer. For breast cancer the standard was to remove the breast. Period.

The second doctor spent an hour and a half with Cheryl, and without being prompted explained not only all aspects of the surgery but also gave her details about her cancer. By the end of the visit, Cheryl had retained the second doctor and dismissed the first.

THE SECOND OPINION VISIT

When Cheryl sat down with the second doctor, but before he had examined her, he told her that based on her medical records she was in a high risk group and the surgery could not be postponed again. He said there was no other way for her to save her life except to have the breast removed.

Ah, but wait…then he examined Cheryl and got a little surprise. He said he couldn’t feel anything where the tumor was supposed to be, and according to the tests it was large enough to be distinguished by touch. Since his more recent physical examination conflicts with her older medical records, he has ordered an MRI before proceeding.

This whole time while the first doctor was setting Cheryl up for surgery, she never ordered an MRI. Cheryl had a suspicious mammogram, which led to a biopsy that showed cancer. The first doctor moved from that result directly to surgery as a treatment. The second doctor said biopsies are not always conclusive and no surgery should have been scheduled without an MRI. Moreover, since Cheryl is in a high risk group an MRI is something her insurance will pay for. Cheryl thinks the first doctor moved too quickly to surgery.

Now we wait to see if beta carotene has eliminated the tumor and the cancer. We are looking at three possible outcomes:

(1) The tumor is larger or the same size; beta carotene isn’t working; Cheryl proceeds to surgery.

(2) The tumor is smaller but still there; beta carotene is working; Cheryl continues with the natural treatment; surgery is postponed until further tests can be conducted.

(3) The tumor is gone; beta carotene is working; Cheryl continues with the natural treatment; surgery is canceled.

PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS FROM CHERYL

Mood

Cheryl was a little nervous at the start of the week due to the looming second opinion. She so wants the cancer to be gone and this whole ordeal to be over. But she is in good spirits overall, and her strength continues to grow.

Pain

None.

Regularity

Cheryl continues to be regular. She moves her bowels twice a day now and there is less product. This would indicate that her body has removed most of the necrotic waste product.

Appetite

Her appetite has pretty much returned to normal, and she can eat what she pleases. Of course, she makes sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables high in anti-oxidants in order to support the efforts of the beta carotene.

Dose Levels

Cheryl continues to take 250 count, of the 25,000 IU strength softgels in a dose of 125 softgels twice daily. Her Vitamin D3 level remains the same. She continued to have occasional stomach distress at the higher lecithin levels of 6 softgels twice daily. For that reason, I have moved her back to 4 softgels twice daily. She says that the distress was not bad enough that she couldn’t continue at the higher level, but I make it a point not to ignore the body’s call for help via its presentation of symptoms.

Here is another look at Cheryl’s dosage levels chart.

CANCER 101

Capehart Cancer Formula

(CA = FRG ≥ X + O + I)©

Formula Explanation: Cancer equals free radical growth greater than or equal to X, with X being an individual’s tolerance level for said growth. When growth reaches the threshold for that individual, oxidation/decay, sets in. As decay spreads, it triggers inflammation. If nothing is done, inflammation will continue until it turns chronic, the last step before any cancer.

Look at the formula as the seven steps to cancer:

Step 1: cell damage occurs

Step 2: electrons escape cell and turn into free radicals

Step 3: free radical growth expands rapidly as they attack healthy cells

Step 4: individual threshold X is reached or exceeded

Step 5: oxidation/decay occurs and triggers inflammation

Step 6: simple inflammation persists and turns into chronic inflammation

Step 7: cancer then flares

It can take many years to get to cancer, but this is the path that takes you there. Bob Marley sustained a minor toe injury playing soccer that never really healed and worsened over time. Seven years later he died of a cancerous brain tumor that can be traced back to that injury.

(Shacter, E., PhD., Weitzman, S., MD, (2002) Journal of Oncology Cancer Network, “Chronic Inflammation and Cancer.” http://www.cancernetwork.com/review-article/chronic-inflammation-and-cancer#sthash.A96sQUUT.dpuf)

Why Beta Carotene Cures Any Cancer

We have learned that free radicals are created whenever a cell is damaged, by any number of reasons, and the electrons escape the outer shell of the cell. As soon as these unpaired electrons escape the shell they become free radicals. Seeking a partner electron, they attack the nearest healthy cell, only to create more free radicals, because a free radical cannot pair up with another free radical to become healthy again.

“A free radical is an atom that has an unpaired electron and is therefore unstable and highly reactive.” This process works so fast that free radical growth can exceed millions per second.

(“Atoms And Elements” http://www.english-online.at/science/atoms-and-elements/atoms-and-important-chemical-elements.htm)

Think of it this way: When you consume beta carotene, and other anti-oxidants, their cells roam through your system searching for free radicals. When a beta carotene cell encounters free radicals, the cell voluntarily opens and donates its electrons to the waiting free radicals. After the pairing between a free radical and an anti-oxidant electron, the free radical is returned to normalcy.

What is happening is that, unlike human electrons, when beta carotene electrons escape their cell, they do not turn into free radicals. Instead, they remain stable as a single electron. This stability means that while free radicals cannot pair with each other, they can pair with anti-oxidant electrons and become healthy and non-cancerous again.

That a free radical can pair with an anti-oxidant electron is the core reason why and how beta carotene cures cancer—one free radical at a time.

Anti-Oxidants Help You Avoid And Stop Cancer

 Fruits+and+Vegetables+Make+Skin+Beautiful

Foods high in anti-oxidants help a great deal when you factor in the part they play in eliminating free radicals inside the body. Each single electron in a cell of an anti-oxidant food will reform and make whole one free radical. One to one, it is a game of numbers. Free radicals can grow as fast as millions per second. But there is no limit to the number of free radicals you can “kill” if you consume enough anti-oxidants in food and supplement form.

(“Atoms And Elements” http://www.english-online.at/science/atoms-and-elements/atoms-and-important-chemical-elements.htm)

In 2009 Russian scientists demonstrated that naturally occurring fat soluble antioxidants reduce inflammation. Fifteen days prior to being artificially induced with acute inflammation the treatment group was given fat soluble antioxidants, including beta carotene. The control group was not given any antioxidants.

The researchers concluded that unique antioxidants could be used therapeutically to reduce the inflammatory response and stimulate the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. And once you reduce inflammation, you have also reduced oxidation and free radical growth.

Make no mistake. Food alone is not enough to stop cancer no matter how perfect your diet. You must take anti-oxidant supplements as well in order to avoid cancer.

CHERYL HAS SIX WEEKS TO CURE HER CANCER WITH ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE OR FACE BREAST REMOVAL SURGERY IF IT DOESN’T WORK

Cheryl’s surgery is already scheduled for mid April 2016. She booked it as far out as was safe, to give my health supplement treatment as much time as possible to work. She has a great fear of going under the knife and coming out with fewer parts than she went in with. Or maybe not coming out at all. It happens.

Her name isn’t really Cheryl. She is a real person, and everything else written here about her is true. I promise anyone who comes to me for help, especially with cancer, that they can go through the treatment anonymously. Cheryl does not want her family, friends, or church to know. She believes that sharing it would make everything harder on her. She doesn’t like a lot of fuss. She will tell them when it’s over. I have agreed to honor her wish.

Cheryl is 5’2.” In her 60s. Blue-eyed and buxomy with blond hair to her waist. She’s smart, independent, quick witted, and practical. She gives a lot of sass and likes to flirt. She is rock solid dependable with a strong work ethic. She likes to play by the rules and wants others to do the same. When she smiles her eyes twinkle.

Cheryl drives a red 1969 Mustang. She speeds so often in her convertible that the police in her small town have taken to mailing her the speeding ticket rather than chasing her down, which she seems to enjoy a bit too much for their tastes.

Cheryl has no children but she loves babies and often helps new mothers in town without being asked. Besides bartending she supports herself by operating a home beauty salon. Apparently, women really do tell their hairdressers everything, because if you want to know anything about anybody in town, just ask Cheryl.

I have known Cheryl for five years, since the recession washed me out financially. Some friends in her town offered me their house while they were gone, to try to help me get back on my feet.

I didn’t have to worry about rent for a while, but essentially I was broke and homeless. I took a job as a server at a local country club, hoping to stir up some cash flow. Cheryl was bar manager. I had never worked in a restaurant or bar. Since I had eaten out a million times in my life, I figured I could fake it.

I was wrong.

My first hour I let an $80 cash tab walk out the door. The guy winked at me as he left. I smiled back, and told him to come again, thinking it was my great service. Later, I gave a burger plate to a vegetarian member, and ice-cream to someone who had ordered breakfast. Things got worse after that.

Unshed tears were burning my eyes when at the end of my shift-from-hell the manager said he needed to talk to me in his office. He wasn’t going to fire me, he said, because I worked hard and everyone seemed to like me. But I lacked a sense of “urgency” and for that he didn’t think I would make it.

Cheryl was waiting outside the door when I came out. She patted my back and promised that things would get better. They didn’t. The next day was even worse and involved a lot of broken china. I could see the manager rethinking his decision to keep me on.

But suddenly, every time I was about to make a mistake Cheryl would appear out of nowhere, at my elbow, to stop me. She took responsibility for me, to make sure I succeeded. With her help I stayed on long enough to get promoted four times and get a nice apology from the manager.

THE CANCER

Most people who interact with me personally end up using supplements for their ails. I don’t try, I swear, but it always seems to work out that way. It was no different with Cheryl. So when she called to tell me she had cancer, she had already put herself on a good regimen for defeating it, based on what I’d already told her about inflammation.

Cheryl has had a couple of biopsies, as her doctor wanted to monitor the cancer’s progress. Among other vitamins, she has been taking 100 Beta Carotene softgels each morning with breakfast. The high dose of Beta Carotene helped explain her pathologist’s comment after her most recent biopsy.

He said, “You know what? I am no longer impressed with your tumor, Cheryl.” He must have seen the look of puzzlement on her face, because he went on to say that it wasn’t a “healthy” tumor anymore. Unlike the earlier biopsies, this flesh had fallen apart, lost its structure, while he was trying to study it.

Cheryl and I attribute this tumor destabilization and loss of integrity to the Beta Carotene that she is taking. But 100 a day are not enough to defeat cancer, only slow it down. Cheryl’s dose is higher than that now.

Cheryl had cancer about 20 years ago. At that time, she used large doses of blue green algae, a potent source of anti-oxidants, to cure it. This knowledge of how well anti-oxidants worked, coupled with the pathologist’s comment now, only strengthened Cheryl’s resolve to try the natural way first. Everything else I have told her about wellness turned out to be true. So, with chin up and fingers crossed she’s going forward.

I will write regular blogs updating you with Cheryl’s progress. The next blog will contain details about her exact treatment.

Each of the entry blogs will give you bite-sized explanations about where cancer comes from. How it starts and proceeds. Why all cancers can be treated in the same way no matter where they are located. Why such huge amounts of Beta Carotene are necessary to defeat cancer once and for all. Why cancer is a numbers game. Why cancer is easier to cure and avoid than the common cold. Why the medical industry will never ever “solve” the cancer mystery.

At the end, hopefully you will have a clearer picture of the answers to these questions, and Cheryl will have a cancer free body.

Please stay tuned and let us hear from you if you have comments or questions.

STOP THE SILENT DANGER THAT KILLS WITHOUT WARNING

CATEGORY: 3: Blockage

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENT: Lecithin

It is the day after Thanksgiving as I begin this post. I spent yesterday with a family of friends ranging from an exasperated teenager, who ate only hot buttered dinner rolls smothered with mashed potatoes—no gravy, she was on a diet—as she glared at the mother who refused to buy her a car on her nearing 16th birthday, to a 95-year-old great-grandpa who lamented about everyone having their face shoved into some kind of machine all the time. If it’s a phone it’s supposed to be next to your ear, not with your nose buried in it. There was a library with big comfortable chairs, perfect soft lighting, and shelves filled with so many classics it could make a book lover weep. Luckily, I had my hankie. They had to pry me out of one of the chairs when it was time to leave. I had a wonderful time.

I also ate too much; seconds on everything. I had no shame. When I got home I went straight to the refrigerator where I swallowed 10 Lecithin softgels, one after the other. The meal I had just put away was full of cholesterol, which would turn to sludge and plaque in my bloodstream, putting me at risk of numerous blockage disorders, including high cholesterol. Lecithin would start the emulsifying process right away, keeping the cholesterol particles in suspension, separated, until they could be processed, and utilized or eliminated.

Definition: Emulsifying Process: It is important to understand that emulsification is the key, and the only way to avoid the long list of blockage disorders that kill millions every year. The emulsification process permits the combining of two substances that normally would not mix, like oil and water, or cholesterol and blood. It does this by breaking down the oily globules into particles so minute they mix easily with water—despite the fact that oil and water don’t mix naturally.  When you emulsify any kind of fat globule you essentially make it behave in a water soluble manner, by suspending water particles throughout its mass, forcing it to combine with liquids into a smooth mixture, and to remain as a mixture over time. The emulsifying process enables large fat globules to be broken down into smaller evenly distributed particles that will not clump together to form plaque and other organic debris that cause blockage disorders like high cholesterol.  Think of the Giant in Jack and The Bean Stalk. He was fearsome and hard to control because of his large size. Suppose Jack’s magic beans had given him additional special powers, and he had cast a spell that turned that one giant into a hundred itty bitty pipsqueaks he could crush underfoot and easily control. It could be said then that Jack had “emulsified” the Giant, taken a large dangerous mass and broken it down into smaller controllable bits with no ability to do harm. The magic spell would be called Lecithin. That’s what Lecithin does, turns large fat globules into tiny fat particles so small your system can handle them without harm or distress. It works equally well on any kind of fat, including cholesterol.

CHOLESTEROL TAKES UP PRECIOUS SPACE IN YOUR ARTERIES

The more cholesterol you have in your bloodstream, the less space there is for blood to flow. It’s that simple. There is a finite amount of space inside your body where necessary processes can be performed, and every function has its own allotted space. The problem with cholesterol is that it takes up room in your arteries reserved for the flow of blood. Your coronary system of arteries, veins, and capillaries is like a complex series of highways and roads that transport vital nutrients and oxygen to every part of your body. Like a real life road system, arterial byways must be kept clear because space on them is limited.

If there is an accident on a real road, wreckage is removed as quickly as possible so other traffic can move past. Otherwise, a complete flow shutdown is possible. Then you have traffic gridlock. Cholesterol has to be removed quickly from your bloodstream, like those wrecked cars on the highway, or it will build up and eventually prevent enough blood from reaching all the spots serviced by the arterial system. Then you have arterial gridlock.

This leads to countless blockage disorders, but most immediate are heart attack and blood clot stroke due to the flow stoppage. Thus, the core goal in trying to control cholesterol levels is to get it out of your bloodstream quickly, before the globules can clump together, rob space, and cause damage. Every steak, ice cream cone, and chicken leg, every coconut shrimp, butter pattie, and scrambled egg you eat robs a bit more space inside your arteries. That’s where Lecithin comes in.

THE STICKY GAME

To help you better understand the connection between Lecithin and cholesterol, let’s pretend there’s a new game called Sticky. The game runs 24 hours and has as many as a hundred players at any given time. The game board is the size of two football fields, and is composed of criss-crossing channels of various circumference that players must navigate in order to find a single exit, and collect a monetary prize, ranging from $1,000 to $100,000, depending on the player’s time. The trick is to avoid getting Stuck and being unable to exit. If a player gets Stuck and has to be removed by clean-up, she is fined $500 for impeding the flow of the game and endangering other players.

Two things make Sticky a difficult game: (1) All players must wear special Velcro  uniforms, and the channels are lined with Velcro. If a player gets stuck to a wall he can’t reach the exit and will have to be extracted; (2) Players can only exit one at a time. If two players get Stuck together, they can’t get out of the game even if they find the exit. Once two players are Stuck together, it’s only a matter of time before other players get Stuck to them and blockages occur.

Here, the players are cholesterol particles that must navigate the channels that represent the arterial system. The exit is the liver, where you want the particles to go once they’ve made a hasty departure from the bloodstream. The monetary prize represents the importance of the speed at which the particles leave the bloodstream. Lecithin is the cleanup crew. (Some games are poorly managed and either don’t have a cleanup crew or don’t have a large enough staff, so that the channels are narrowed by Stuck players and difficult to get through. This would be comparable to someone who never takes Lecithin.) Velcro symbolizes the nature of cholesterol particles to “stick” to each other and the walls of your arteries.

You can see the connection between the Sticky game and what goes on inside your body with cholesterol. Please keep this in mind as you read.

CHOLESTEROL AND BLOCKAGES

Cholesterol is a waxy, greasy, high viscosity substance that is elemental to the fats in your body. It comes from two sources: (1) your liver, which produces all you need for good health, and sometimes more than you need, and (2) the food you eat that contains it. That means healthy people don’t have to depend on diet for cholesterol. Highest in cholesterol are animal origin foods including meat, eggs, milk, cheese, and butter. Cholesterol is even found in fish. Plant origin foods have no cholesterol, and along with grains actually help lower overall cholesterol.

Definition: Viscosity: This is a way of measuring how fast or slow a fluid moves. A fluid with high viscosity is thick, resists motion, and moves slowly. A fluid with low viscosity is thin and moves quickly. Compare how fast water, cooking oil, or molasses would flow through a hole in a paper cup. Water, thin and with very low viscosity that doesn’t resist motion, would drain quickly; cooking oil would take longer because it’s thicker; and molasses would take the longest because it is the thickest, with the highest viscosity of the three.  Blood Viscosity is a measure of the thickness of blood and how fast it moves. Cholesterol is sticky and contributes to making blood thick and high viscosity, which in turn makes it slow moving inside your arterial system. That’s why having high blood viscosity is linked to blockage disorders like high cholesterol.

Blockage disorders are a whole subset of health problems in my paradigm of wellness, which I call The Seven Categories of Illness. (Blog 30) Blockages are the Category 3 disease group, and high cholesterol is in that category, along with many other disorders. A high cholesterol diet that causes arterial blockages, like my Thanksgiving abuse, puts one at risk for many health problems besides high cholesterol. But all blockage disorders can be treated successfully with Lecithin, because of its emulsifying abilities and because all blockages have the same root cause.

What starts as high cholesterol will contribute to the development of other blockage disorders, from lung congestion to angina (chest pains), heart attack, coronary artery disease, erectile dysfunction, gallstones, blood clot stroke, glaucoma, arthrosclerosis plaque, high blood pressure, loss of mobility in joints, fatty liver disease, Alzheimer’s, and so many more. They all stem from blockages and will all respond favorably to Lecithin.

However, as much as it can wreak havoc in your system, cholesterol is found throughout your body and is vital to good health. You need it, but too much can harm and even kill you.

TYPES OF CHOLESTEROL

Based on behavior inside the body, there are two primary cholesterols, referred to as good and bad. If the cholesterol globule can quickly exit the bloodstream and get to the liver for processing, it is considered good, as in well behaved, because it doesn’t remain long enough in the bloodstream to create a blockage. But if the cholesterol can’t get out of the bloodstream quickly, it stays there long enough to get stuck to other particles, form plaque and stick to the walls, hence bad. Remember the Sticky game.

THE TWO CHOLESTEROLS

High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HD): This is low viscosity cholesterol, fast moving good cholesterol, so called because it gets out of the bloodstream quickly and promptly checks in at the liver for processing. It does not contribute to blockages in your arteries or elsewhere. You can remember the difference by thinking of “H” for healthy, or that HD moves like the hare. Quickly.

Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LD): This is high viscosity cholesterol, slow moving bad cholesterol, so called because it stays too long in your blood stream. Its particles stick to each other and the walls of your arterial system, hardening and narrowing the channels and causing blockages as they accumulate. You can remember the difference by thinking of “L” for life-threatening, or that LD moves like the tortoise. Lazily.

Definition: Lipoprotein: A cholesterol particle can’t transport itself in your bloodstream without help, so each particle latches on to a protein and uses it to travel through the bloodstream, like a passenger in a rickshaw. Clinically, a fat is referred to as a lipid; hence the protein that transports a lipid is called a lipoprotein.

 WHY LECITHIN LOWERS CHOLESTEROL

As a natural emulsifier, Lecithin has the ability to keep organic particles in suspension as a mixture, preventing them from clumping together. It is extracted from soybeans and other natural sources. It is known to be safe, and has been used in our food supply for over 100 years. Take a look in your cabinets and refrigerator and you’ll see Lecithin used in many foods and cosmetics, because of its ability to maintain the stability of a mixture—to keep it in a mixed state.

Without Lecithin, when you opened a box of biscuit mix, it wouldn’t come out in a nice powdery stream, but would plop into your bowl in funky clumps. Without Lecithin, facial moisturizer wouldn’t be creamy and smooth, but would show the oils coagulated and greasy. Without Lecithin, mayonnaise would be a congealed mess; likewise, peanut butter. Lecithin is what keeps ingredients in suspension, as a mixture.

Some food and cosmetic producers opt for chemicals to replace Lecithin because they’re cheaper. Something has to be used to stabilize the mixed components in commercial food and cosmetic products or they would separate from the mixture. Lecithin is the natural way. It’s Lecithin’s ability to keep organic particles in suspension—mixed—that makes it such a valuable food supplement.

It isn’t such a huge leap from witnessing Lecithin’s known properties on other organic and biological material outside the body to understanding that it can do the same thing inside it.

READER COMMENT ON LECITHIN’S EFFECTIVENESS LOWERING CHOLESTEROL

The following is from one of my other blogs, posted by someone who is using Lecithin to treat a different blockage disorder than high cholesterol.

“Thank you for your helpful advice…. Using Lecithin my triglycerides dropped from over 200 to 137, and my total cholesterol dropped to 125. Now, my concern is that I read that one’s cholesterol should not be lower than 160 since your brain, hormones, etc. need cholesterol. Is the emulsified cholesterol still available for brain and hormone requirements? Your insight would be appreciated.”  Thanks, Ken Johnson

Mr. Johnson wasn’t trying to lower his cholesterol or triglycerides. He was treating something completely different, but since all three problems are blockage disorders they all responded to Lecithin. He guessed correctly that emulsified cholesterol is still available for the body’s health requirements. Cholesterol is measured by a blood test that indicates how much is in the bloodstream. Once cholesterol leaves the bloodstream and enters the liver for processing it is still available to the body to use. All that Lecithin does is prevent cholesterol from blocking your arteries. It doesn’t stop your body from utilizing the cholesterol.

The Difference Between Triglycerides And Cholesterol

Triglycerides and cholesterol are separate types of fats that circulate in your bloodstream. The function of triglycerides is to store unused calories until you need them for energy, while cholesterol builds cells. Alcohol, sugar, and calories you don’t immediately burn are converted into triglycerides and stored in fat cells throughout your body. High concentrations of triglycerides indicate an elevated risk of stroke and other blockages, just like cholesterol.

MANAGING YOUR CHOLESTEROL NATURALLY

Genetics aren’t important when it comes to high cholesterol. Even if you have family members with the disorder, or your liver makes more cholesterol than you need, Lecithin will keep your levels low. This is true because what is really inherited are poor eating habits, and resulting nutritional deficiencies.

Unless you eat fruits, vegetables and grains exclusively, you have a daily additional intake of cholesterol your body doesn’t need but must still process. Lecithin is the answer. Also helpful are making a few dietary changes to include more fresh fruits and vegetables, regular exercise, and a little restraint from time to time. A good balance is never have a cooked food without eating something fresh and raw with it, whether fruit or vegetable. Canned and frozen products do not qualify unless you do not have access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

HIGH CHOLESTEROL IN CATS AND DOGS

Cats and dogs are also susceptible to high cholesterol, and other blockage disorders. Lecithin can also help them to avoid these health problems.

Last summer fate brought me a kitten, a Calico with orange and black markings on top, white underneath, beautiful green eyes, and a tail twice her size. I named her Nikki. She was mischievous and the name seemed right. When I brought her home she fit in my palms.

The photo on top is Nikki on Christmas morning opening presents from her godparents in Seattle. In the middle shows how Nikki helps me get ready for work everyday. Below is a nice close up of my pretty girl.

Nikki was born in a comic book store to a stray the clerks fed when they remembered. She was taken from her mom at about six weeks and given to a friend who shortly thereafter had to leave for Europe. It was either me or the pound for the little girl. I watched her sitting up on those tiny hind legs, batting a piece of paper like it was the best toy in the world, and fell in love.

No one was certain exactly when the little fluff had been born, but I think she got her shots and spaying late. From the beginning Nikki was always sneezing; sometimes in a series of ten or more. Then she got digestion problems and stopped eating after just two weeks. I naturally reasoned that she needed more nutrition. I started giving her at alternate meals, drops of Beta Carotene, or Vitamin D3, or Vitamin E, or Cod Liver Oil. I also give her ¼ teaspoon of Lecithin granules a couple times a week, mixed in with one of two daily wet meals. I read a list of elements harmful to cats and was confident that these supplements were ok.

During the holidays Nikki’s godmother gave me a book, The Natural Cat, by Anitra Frazier, written with Norma Eckroate. I was relieved to read that I was taking the right path by supplementing Nikki’s diet. Frazier suggests creating a mixture of equal parts wheat bran, yeast, kelp or mixed trace mineral powder, bonemeal, and Lecithin granules. Yes, Frazier recommends Lecithin for cats because it emulsifies fat in a cat’s diet the same way it does in a human’s diet. And thereby prevents blockage disorders. Frazier recommends adding ½ to 1 teaspoon of this mixture to each meal, totaling 1-2 teaspoons per day. She also adds weekly supplementation of Vitamin E softgels, and Vitamin A & D softgels. (p. 68) I’m going to wait until Nikki is a year old before putting her on this mixture regimen. Kittens have sensitive stomachs and Nikki’s is especially sensitive.

I also treated a large loveable dog named Dino. We even did a wellness video together. At each of his two daily meals I recommended adding a teaspoon of Lecithin granules to keep his arthritic joints mobile and to fight high cholesterol, and a teaspoon of bran for roughage. Dino also got a Beta Carotene 25,000 IU softgel and a Vitamin E 400 IU softgel, each hidden inside its own cream cheese ball and then buried in the food. He lived to be 18.

You can use it in cooked recipes for texture and smoothness, but those amounts do not count toward your daily maintenance dose. One tablespoon of Lecithin granules equals six softgels. You can’t take too much. Feel free to use additional amounts liberally of either the granules or softgels.

Lecithin granules are odorless and tasteless. The granules mix easily into wet food. They are harder to go unnoticed over dry food. It’s probably a good idea to wait until an animal is a year old before putting her on this daily regimen.

NOTES

• I recommend Puritan’s Pride because their Lecithin contains a minimum of 70 mg of phosphatides in each 1200 mg softgel, equivalent to 61 percent. The value of a Lecithin product is determined by the percentage of phosphatides, as they activate the fat emulsifying process. You may use another brand but make sure it conforms to these specifications.

• When you use Lecithin regularly, in the beginning you may notice you are expelling more wastes than usual. This happens because Lecithin breaks up blockages, causing mucus and other wastes to be released. This is a good sign and will taper off as your body cleanses itself.

• Lecithin will NOT cause chunks of plaque to rupture, fall off the artery wall and threaten a flow stoppage. It emulsifies, working on a molecular level, keeping fat particles in suspension, making sure they don’t clump together and cause a blockage.

• Some of you are concerned that soybean production is almost entirely controlled by corporations practicing genetic modification. They are in the process of obtaining ownership of the very food we eat, an ugly business. You’re worried that certain soya Lecithin may be coming from these genetically altered soybeans. This bothers me too, and I avoid these food types whenever possible. But if you can’t find Lecithin that you are sure is from non-modified soybeans, it becomes a question of the tiger in the room versus the tiger in the backyard. There is definitely danger presented by the tiger in the yard, but not nearly as much as that posed by the tiger in the room with you. Blockage disorders are the tiger in the room. Genetic modification is the tiger in the backyard. You’ll get sick and die faster from a blockage disorder than you will from consuming genetically modified soybeans. There is also the alternative of sunflower Lecithin, which readers tell me works fine.

BREATHE EASY IN LESS THAN TWO WEEKS

CATEGORIES: 2: Inflammation, 3: Blockage

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENTS: Beta Carotene, Lecithin, L-Cysteine,

My father, Raleigh, was career Army. He loved it. Loved the order and organization. The discipline and polish. The precision and pomp. He considered it a true meritocracy, and believed there was no more level playing field for a man of color then, than in the U.S. Army. Thankfully, he never tried to impose his love of order and discipline on me. He didn’t bring home the soldier, only the dad.

But whatever made Raleigh a good warrior also fed a bit of an obsession with my safety and well being. His only child, and him a single parent. Thus it was his habit to try to incorporate defense information into our everyday activities. But it never came across like a “lesson.” He was smart and always teaching me new things. The defense part seemed all of a piece with the other information.

More often than not he made it a game, like “Front Door Intruder,” where he would knock on the screen door and pretend to be an intruder. I would open the front door, spot the malice in his face. He would pull the screen and come at me. The game was to see if I could turn and make it up the stairs to my bedroom and lock the door before he could catch me. Of course he taught me not to open the door in the first place; this was just his backup plan in case I forgot.

If we were watching a show on television and a woman was on her way into a trap, he would turn to me and want to know what was wrong with the picture. What mistake was she making? What should she do? When the victim was a man, my father would identify himself with that person and ask how I would go about rescuing him. If I gave a wrong answer I might hear something like, “No, no, first you have to create a diversion.” Then we would run through my options for creating a diversion.

Among other things, Raleigh signed me up at the Police Athletic League for rifle lessons, taught me himself how to use a hand gun, and the correct way to hold a knife as a weapon. He showed me the best escape routes out of the house from every single room, how to get to the police station through a series of backyards, and that a well placed kick to the shin would slow an attacker as quickly as one to the groin. If you’re wearing shoes.

He also schooled me on basic survival techniques. Sundays, when the family was lazing around the house reading the newspapers and funny pages, and laboring over the New York Times crossword puzzle, he would suddenly pull out The Army Survival Manual (ASM) for a bit of light reading and discussion. Groans might be heard from another room but I usually cooperated, and he usually reciprocated with ice cream, sometimes homemade by him.

The ASM makes for absorbing reading. It tells a soldier how to survive in a battle situation when she is separated from her unit. How to think, psychologically, and what to do. But there are survival tips that serve civilians just as well: What if your car breaks down in the desert? What if your small boat washes out to sea while you’re napping? What if your snow mobile runs out of gas on an Alaskan ice ledge? What if you get separated from your camping party and lost in the woods?

The ASM instructs that if you are stranded in a survival situation, there are fundamental steps to be taken if you want to make it out alive. And the steps should be taken in specific order if possible. If you are injured, first aid takes priority. Second is to find water, because we can only live a few days without it; third is build or find shelter for protection from the elements, whether rain, snow, wind, sea, or sun; fourth is find food; and fifth is find a way to signal rescuers who will be looking for you, or, make plans to travel from the site on your own.

Notice that none of the steps tells you to find an air source. We expect air to always be there. We can live without it only minutes at best. So no one cautions searching for an air source. But what if you couldn’t depend on getting enough air, and had no real control over the situation? What if once you got air in, got your lungs all filled up, you couldn’t get the air back out? In a very literal sense, asthma steals your breath away.

ASTHMA AND INFLAMMATION

Asthma is a chronic inflammation in your lungs, which triggers certain responses from your body that together form what we call an asthma attack.

Let’s say you’re on vacation with three friends, renting a seaside cottage on the Maine coast. It’s a hot July day and the bees are out busily pollinating flowers. You have a cigarette on the porch with a cup of Earl Grey. Watching the waves entices you to take a swim in the Atlantic, where you push yourself beyond your normal limits. As you leave the water you feel a tightness forming in your chest. Your heart speeds slightly in anticipation of an imminent asthma episode. By the time you get back to your room, you’re coughing and having trouble breathing.

An asthma attack starts with inflammation. That’s what asthma medicines like inhaled and swallowed corticosteroids try to achieve, the control of inflammation. You can have inflammation anywhere in your body, but in the lungs is possibly the worst place to have it. If you suffer from asthma, you walk around with a chronic, low grade inflammation in your lungs all the time, making them overly sensitive and therefore susceptible to certain triggers.

When those triggers are activated as they were in the opening hypothetical, by pollen dust, cigarette smoke, hard exercise, and fatigue, that low grade inflammation flares inside your lungs into a full blown one. When inflammation reaches a base point threshold in your lungs, it triggers an asthma attack.

We’re all familiar with the symptoms of inflammation. If you bang your wrist on a fence, the affected area will redden and warm due to increased blood flow as your body reacts to the damage; it will swell as the body dispatches fluids, trying to cool the heat it just produced; it will be painful from a chemical released in reaction to the damage that over stimulates nerve endings; and there will be a loss of function, because of all the other reasons.

When that process happens on a wrist it’s an annoyance but you get on with your day. If it happens inside your lungs, it’s a catastrophe, and you could suffocate. Let’s walk through an asthma attack, step by horrible step:

SIX STEPS TO AN ASTHMA EPISODE

Step 1: your specific trigger causes inflammation to explode inside your sensitive lungs;

Step 2: your body acts to protect the area by expanding capillaries, which increases blood flow to the lungs, and causes reddening and warmth;

Step 3: the reddening and warmth signal your body to send extra fluids to your lungs, attempting to cool the heat it just produced there;

Step 4: the extra fluids are absorbed by the lung tissue and result in swelling and the production of excess mucus;

Step 5: as lung tissue swells and the lungs fill with mucus, airways constrict (narrow); this lethal combination of swelling, mucus, and airway narrowing reduces the space in the lungs, until there isn’t enough left for air to move in and out. (You try to take a breath but there’s no place for the air to enter into.)

Step 6: the narrowed airways cause chest tightening, and pressure in the chest as your muscles work harder and harder for every breath; it can get so bad that no air can circulate in and out, and you lose function in the lungs.

There is pain and discomfort throughout this entire frightening process.

ASTHMA’S CHAIN REACTION

environmental trigger inflammation reddening and warmth fluids swelling mucus narrowed airways trouble breathing loss of lung function → with pain and discomfort throughout the entire process

ATTACKING ASTHMA

As you can see from the steps above, if you can stop inflammation from flaring, you can stop the chain reaction that leads to an asthma attack. All of the symptoms associated with asthma have inflammation as the core problem. Because of the chain reaction asthma causes in the lungs, it takes several supplements to control and prevent it naturally.

There is no better inflammation fighter than Beta Carotene, along with its support partner, Vitamin D3. (Please see Blog 3: The Dangers of Inflammation for more information.) You are given the option of taking from 15 to 25 softgels twice daily. If you start with 15 and do not get the results as described here, simply increase your dosage and keep increasing it until the asthma is under control, even if it means taking more than 25 softgels twice daily. This is only nutrition and will not hurt you. Let me say that again. Beta Carotene will not hurt you. It is perhaps the kindest gift the universe has ever given us. Whatever dosage works to control your inflammation is your specific daily maintenance dose of Beta Carotene.

Lecithin will keep lungs clear of the mucus produced by your body as it tries to heal the usually low grade, but never ending, inflammation in your lungs.

L-Cysteine, along with its support partner, Vitamin C Complex, has an incredible ability to heal and cleanse the lungs fast and efficiently.

You can avoid the side effects of asthma medicines with these food supplements that actually heal the condition without causing harm. Taken together, they are all that you need to control and prevent asthma. You should plan on taking the extra nutrition in these supplements daily, as a maintenance dose, to make sure you keep asthma completely in check. Otherwise it will return if you stop.

NOTES

► If you take Beta Carotene without also taking Vitamin D, you will deplete your stores of Vitamin D and develop a Vitamin D deficiency. It may manifest as sores on the inside of the mouth. Always take Vitamin D when you take Beta Carotene. Vitamin D3 is recommended because it more closely replicates the Vitamin D made naturally on your skin from contact with the sun. If you can’t find D3, take straight Vitamin D.

Lecithin is the best natural emulsifier available, and will safely breakup and remove congestion from your lungs and sinus. I have recommended Puritan’s Pride brand because theirs is from soybeans only, and contains a minimum of 732 mg of phosphatides in each 1200 mg softgel, equivalent to 61 percent phosphatides. The value of a Lecithin product is determined by the percentage of phosphatides, because they activate the emulsifying process in your body. You may use another brand but make sure it conforms to or exceeds these specifications or it will not work as I described.

► When you use Lecithin regularly, in the beginning you will notice that you are coughing up and blowing out of your nose, a lot more mucus than usual. And it may appear thicker, nastier, and more opaque than usual. This is happening because Lecithin is breaking up congestion blockages in your lungs and other areas, causing mucus and other wastes to be expelled. This is a good sign and will taper off as your body cleans itself.

► Lecithin Granules are best used in blender drinks and sprinkled on salads, fresh cut fruit, and cereals. Make sure to consume it uncooked, in its natural state. You can use it in cooked recipes for texture and smoothness, but those amounts do not count toward your daily maintenance dose. It’s completely safe so take as much as you want.

► When you open a bottle of L-Cysteine you will notice a strong odor. It’s supposed to smell like that. It’s the sulphur. If you have a sulphur allergy do not use L-Cysteine.

► In order for L-Cysteine to work effectively it must be taken with twice its weight in Vitamin C. So, if you were to take 1000 mg of L-Cysteine, you would need 2000 mg of Vitamin C in order to get the L-Cysteine to work properly. This therapy will not work as I have described if you take L-Cysteine alone, or without enough Vitamin C.

END PAIN AND POSTPONE OR AVOID SURGERY WITH THIS NUTRITION THERAPY

CATEGORY: 1: Simple Malnutrition

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENTS: Glucosamine, Monavie Active, Beta Carotene,  and Lecithin

As an infant you are born with 300 to 350 bones. As you grow, some of them fuse together, thereby decreasing the overall number until it drops to 206 in adulthood. There isn’t strict agreement on the number of joints in a human body. The answers range from no one knows to a couple hundred. We can agree that you need a lot of joints to hold together 206 bones.

Definitions: A Joint is the spot where two or more of your 206 individual bones are joined in such a manner as to permit flexibility and movement of the musculoskeletal structure. Joints are held in place by Ligaments, tough elastic tissue that connects bones and cartilage to the joint. (Tendons connect muscle to bone.)

Osteoarthritis (OA) assaults your joints and cartilage, and affects more people than rheumatoid arthritis, the “other” arthritis, which is an auto immune disorder. OA is the number one cause of chronic disability in the United States, and accounts for one in four visits to a primary physician. Meaning, that if we could get control of this disease, we could greatly reduce chronic disability, and eliminate the costs associated with 25 percent of primary care visits.

It is believed that some people have a genetic propensity that causes them to contract OA. Even so, you can always trump genetics with nutrition. Always. It’s not the family genes that are at fault, but the family diet that is passed on to succeeding generations.

OA is also known as degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease, simply because as the disease progresses the joints actually degrade, erode, and slowly disappear in places. The polite term is “narrowing.” OA symptoms include acute pain, chronic stiffness, fiery burning sensation, swelling from water retention, bone spurs, crackling sounds (crepitus) when joint is used, and enlargement and misshaping of the joint. Naturally, any combination of these can lead to a loss of mobility. There are lucky people who do not have symptoms, despite x-ray evidence of OA.

Definition: Bone Spur: It is caused by the same inflammation that causes swelling from water retention, and most of the pain and burning. This inflammation stimulates the overgrowth of bone cells, causing them to deposit too much bone in the area of the arthritis. The extra bone accumulates until there is a noticeable bony outgrowth called a spur. Bone spurs are one reason for the enlargement and misshaping of an arthritic joint, and are directly related to inflammation.

PREVENTING CARTILAGE DEGRADATION AND LOSS IS THE FOCUS FOR TREATING OSTEOARTHRITIS

OA is not a complicated disease despite its debilitating affect on your body. It can be successfully treated with nutrition that targets the resultant symptoms, and also the trigger itself, which is wear and tear. OA results directly from the loss of cartilage, the spongy protein substance that “cushions” the joints and keeps the bones from bumping into each other as you move.

Humans are always seeking “cushions” in life. We want the cushy job. We are told it is wise to have a financial cushion in case of hard times.  Chairs are padded with cushions for our butt’s comfort. Your car’s bumper cushions it from other, inept drivers. Take that natural desire for cushion to a biological level. Each bone has the same need. It needs a cushion to keep the other, inept bones away from it.

A large part of the cartilage cushion is dependent upon water content and other joint components like Glucosamine. If you don’t give your body the building nutrients it needs to repair cartilage, it will dry out over time and become less resilient. As the cartilage dries it provides less and less of a cushion for the adjoining bones. If the cartilage dries out completely, the cushion is lost and the bones collide with drastic results.

A great loss of flexibility and mobility occurs when the cushion collapses and bones start grinding against each other. Movement becomes painful and sometimes impossible. With a loss of cartilage, joints can actually lock in place. The stress on the joint from the disintegration of cartilage causes inflammation. Once inflammation is present the other symptoms show up as well.

ALL JOINTS ARE AT RISK FOR OSTEOARTHRITIS

OA can affect any joint but it usually presents in hands, feet, hips, knees, spine and lower back. The medical industry tells you that osteoarthritis is simply a natural result of aging. That you should go ahead and expect your joints to wear out before you’re done using them. Joint replacement surgery has become routine.

This medical information is confirmed by your own observations. When you look around you see most people over 45 with some symptom of OA. They complain that certain joints have become tender and achy. Or that they’re beginning to experience stiffness. Maybe a little swelling now and then? That’s the beginning of OA. But today you also hear 23-year-olds complaining about OA, while some 90-somethings show no signs of the disease. OA is no longer a disorder associated strictly with aging. Now it’s a disorder also associated with a profound lack of nutrition, regardless of your age.

The truth is that evolution designed your joints to operate efficiently for over 100 years, if supplied along the way with the nutritional building materials they need to make repairs and maintain their integrity. But after decades of use without enough nutrition, sure, they’re going to fail prematurely. They’re going to wear out.

Think of a favorite pair of shoes that you wear every day for months. They’re comfortable and you love them because they make you look cool. After a while the heels and soles show signs of wear and tear. Your first impulse, since these are your favorites, is to take them to a repair shop before they fall apart and you can’t wear them anymore.

Same thing with your joints. If you expect to get extended use out of them, you have to take steps to ensure they can fulfill the 100 year warranty. Your joints are in use more or less constantly. Even when you’re asleep, you can’t turn over in bed, scratch your ear, or reach for the annoying alarm without using many of your joints. Everything you do, your mobility itself, depends on actions by your joints. Without healthy joints you would become an immobile stick creature like Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz, before Dorothy saved him with the oil can. If you supplement your diet with specific nutrients, your joints will have the building materials they need to make repairs and maintain stability.

THE SUPPLEMENTS

Glucosamine Sulfate or Glucosamine Hydrochloride (HCL) both do a good job of repairing and forming new cartilage inside joints. Glucosamine is a component of joint tissue and important to the production of synovial fluid, which keeps the joint lubricated. Your body produces Glucosamine, but the levels fall as you age and fail to add it as a supplement to your diet.

There is disagreement on which Glucosamine works better, the sulfate or the hydrochloride form. You’ll have to experiment to see which works best for you. For a long time I used sulfate and it worked fine, but then I noticed that taking it caused irritation in some joints, especially the knee. When I switched to hydrochloride the results improved. I can promise you that Glucosamine will rebuild the cartilage cushion in your joints, but your individual factors will decide which is best for you. Don’t lose heart if you try one form and it doesn’t work for you. Simply switch to the other to get relief.

While Glucosamine is the accepted supplement for rebuilding cartilage and preventing future loss of it, Monavie Active, which has a potent Hydrochloride form of Glucosamine, is very effective and highly recommended.

Lecithin is an emulsifier. It smoothes out the cartilage being constructed by the other supplements, and keeps the joint clear of organic debris that is the cause of a lot of the pain experienced by those who have OA. Like Dorothy’s oil can, Lecithin helps keep the joints lubricated and mobile.

Beta Carotene reduces free radical activity and thereby calms inflammation. It also reduces pain, burning, swelling, and misshaping of the joint through bone spurs.

Vitamin D3 supports Beta Carotene in its inflammation fighting function. If you take Beta Carotene without Vitamin D, you will deplete your stores of Vitamin D and develop a Vitamin D deficiency. That’s why you should always take Vitamin D when taking Beta Carotene. Vitamin D3 is recommended because it more closely replicates the Vitamin D made naturally on your skin from contact with the sun. If you can’t find D3, take straight Vitamin D.

Ibuprophen eliminates 90 percent of the stiffness accompanying OA. The pain, burning, and swelling will end if you take the supplements discussed above. But if stiffness is still a problem, regular daily use of Ibuprophen makes a huge improvement. You’ll stop feeling like you’re already 100.

IF YOUR KNEE JOINTS ARE THE PROBLEM IT’S IMPORTANT TO EXERCISE THE MUSCLES THAT SUPPORT THE JOINT

Make no mistake, if you’re aiming for zero tolerance you have to take all of the supplements recommended above. But if you follow the instructions and find that you still have discomfort, weak muscles might be the problem. You need strong muscles surrounding the knee to hug the joint and hold it in place. If the muscles are weak they permit too much movement in the joint which leads to an instability. Your knee stability will improve shortly after doing the following exercises.

The focus here is on the muscles on either side of the joint. It’s a good idea to do these exercises at least three times a week on a regular basis. The directions begin each exercise with the left leg, but you can switch it up if you want to.

The directions also instruct you to switch back and forth from the left leg to the right leg. If you prefer you can do all the exercises for one leg before moving on to the other leg.

OUTER KNEE MUSCLES

STARTING POSITION: Begin all three exercises lying on your right side, supporting your head with your right hand and bent elbow, with your body bent at the hip so that you are in the shape of an “L.”

EXERCISE 1.     Keeping both legs straight and your left foot flat and parallel to the floor, lift your left leg about eight inches and drop it back down gently. Do 25 reps. Up and down. Change sides and repeat for right leg.

EXERCISE 2.     Keeping both legs straight, lift your left leg a few inches and point your toes. Keeping both knees in alignment, one above the other, bend your left leg and swing it back gently, until it makes a 90 degree angle with your upper thigh, and straighten it again. Do 25 reps. Back and forth. Change sides and repeat for right leg.

EXERCISE 3.     Keeping both legs straight, and your foot flat, bring your left knee toward your chest as far as you can, and return it to a straight position. Do 25 reps. Up and back. Change sides and repeat for right leg.

INNER KNEE MUSCLES

STARTING POSITION: Begin all three exercises sitting on the floor with your legs spread in front of you in a V-shape. Bend your right knee and place your right foot flat on the floor. Lean to the left and rest your weight on your bent elbow with your left hand against the floor. Rest your right arm on your bent leg.

EXERCISE 1.     Your left leg is still where it was originally in the V-shape. Turn your left leg so that the inner leg is facing up. Keeping your foot flat and the inner side facing the ceiling, begin to bob your leg up and down about four inches. Do 25 reps. Up and down. Change sides and repeat for right leg.

EXERCISE 2.     Your left leg is still where it was originally in the V-shape. Turn your left leg so that the inside is facing up. Keeping your left foot flat and the inner side facing the ceiling, bend your left knee, bringing your heel close to your body. Push out and down gently, leading with your left heel. Do 25 reps. In and out. Change sides and repeat for right leg.

EXERCISE 3.     This exercise is almost identical to the one above. Your left leg is still where it was originally in the V-shape. Keeping your left foot flat and the inner side facing the ceiling, bend your left knee, bringing your heel close to your body. But this time kick out and away, while leading with your pointed toes. Do 25 reps. In and out. Change sides and repeat for right leg.

ANIMALS GET CANCER FOR THE SAME REASONS PEOPLE DO AND IN THE SAME WAY

CATEGORIES: 2: Inflammation, 3: Blockage, 11: Pet Health

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENTS: Beta Carotene, Lecithin

(I purposely misspell antioxidant to make a point.)

nPlD1q

The same stressors that cause cancer in people also cause cancer in cats and dogs; or rabbits and mice for that matter. Cancer is the leading cause of death in cats, and after euthanasia the number one killer of dogs as well. Any multi-cellular creature that tries to exist in our oxygen rich environment, from ant to acrocanthosaurus, is subject to constant cellular bombardment and degeneration from free radical formation. Degeneration that is the road to cancer.

Formula: Cancer: I understand cancer, know how to prevent it, how to stop it once it’s started, even how to grab the coat tails of someone who’s been sent home to die with it, and give them back their years. From my experience I see cancer as a mathematical equation that looks something like the following, elegant and predictable:

 (C = FR > X + (O + I).)

Where cancer equals Free Radical growth greater than X, with X representing a tolerance level that varies depending on other individual factors, plus subsequent Oxidation (cell decay), and Inflammation.

Cells are damaged and free radicals created in your pet’s body by many stressors: (a) naturally, of course, as a result of simple metabolism, but also from (b) irritation, like a too tight collar or harness that frays the coat and leaves under-skin red and tender, (c) injury, like getting a paw run over by a full shopping cart in the parking lot, causing tenderness, (d) infection, like that from stepping on a nail or eating an infected rodent, (e) toxins, like radiation or cigarette smoke, (f) poor diet, that has a lower level of anti-oxidants than the amount of free radicals created, and (g) other stressors specific to an individual animal.

HOW A PET’S CELLS ARE DAMAGED AND CONVERTED TO FREE RADICALS

Your pet’s body is comprised of cells. Inside a cell, each electron has to have a partner electron in order for the cell to remain stable and healthy—and non cancerous. In other words, the two electrons have to remain together inside the cell or there will be trouble. Trouble comes when something happens to damage the bond between the partnered electrons in a healthy cell. If they become separated, or one of them is destroyed, the single electron left behind becomes a free radical, unstable and dangerous.

The single electron, who is now a free radical, goes berserk when it finds itself suddenly alone, without its partner electron. (How would you feel if someone took your spouse or partner away?) It turns and immediately attacks a nearby healthy cell that has both electrons. It desperately tries to break them apart, so it can steal one electron and become stable and healthy again itself. If it is successful it once again becomes stable with its stolen electron, but the cell it disrupted and stole from becomes a free radical itself and continues the angry process. A cascade effect leads to severe cellular damage and mutations like cancer.

As an analogy, think of the bonded electrons in a healthy cell as a married couple in a social system where being single is prohibited. In this system, two people (electrons) who are part of a marriage are stable, acceptable. No problem. Live long and prosper. But a single person (electron) without a partner is a free radical who can only prosper by breaking up another married pair. Like someone who breaks up a marriage and runs off with one of the partners, free radicals seek to destroy other nearby stable cellular relationships for their own benefit, so they can survive. A free radical is an electron fighting for its life.

Although free radicals are a natural part of living, like the home wrecker, when too many of them build up due to the factors listed above, you have oxidation and inflammation. Any area of the body can take a certain amount of free radical growth in their neighborhoods and be fine. It’s when too many free radicals show up that the problems begin. Think of your own house or apartment. If you were having a party and planned on 15 guests, how chaotic would it be if 1500 people showed up?

WHEN TOO MANY FREE RADICALS ARE CREATED YOU HAVE OXIDATION

Oxidation is predicated on reaching a threshold level of free radicals that overwhelms the body. The simplest way of thinking about oxidation is that it is spoilage, aging, decay, and eventual cell death. You know what happens to an avocado slice left out in the “open air.” The exposed flesh turns brown from contact with oxygen. It oxidizes, spoils, due to an excess of free radicals. The same thing happens inside your body. After a while the avocado will begin to brown and rot, and you won’t eat it. That’s a good instinct, because you would be literally eating free radicals! That’s why you should never eat salad that has browned, or other food that is obviously past its prime, unless you absolutely have to. Broadly speaking, living on Earth is being left out in the “open air” and that’s why aging is another form of oxidation caused by free radicals.

HOW ANTI-OXIDANTS NEUTRALIZE FREE RADICALS AND PREVENT INFLAMMATION AND CANCER

Anti-oxidants protect your pet’s body from free radical damage because they have a unique characteristic. Anti-oxidants neutralize free radicals by donating one of their own electrons to the free radical, helping it to become partnered and healthy again. It’s as if the anti-oxidant marries the free radical and thereby calms it down.

An anti-oxidant cell also has two partnered electrons, but wonderfully, anti-oxidants are stable in either form, as a single electron or a married pair. Unlike the partnered electrons in a healthy cell that become free radicals when separated, anti-oxidants give up one of their electrons without becoming a free radical.

Anti-oxidants stop the problem at its source. When an anti-oxidant cell encounters a free radical it ends the electron-stealing chain reaction by freely donating one of its electrons, turning the free radical back into a healthy cell. Like evil Mr. Hyde drinking an antidote and turning back into the good Dr. Jekyll.

As an animal’s guardian, you have a choice to either let free radicals run loose in your pet’s system, and hope they don’t turn into cancer, and subject it to surgery if they do. Or you can send in anti-oxidants to partner with the free radicals and return them to normalcy, thereby avoiding disease without stressing the animal.

The first thing a sous chef does after cutting avocado slices, and before serving them with your grilled chicken sandwich, is to sprinkle on some lemon or lime juice. She does this because the anti-oxidants in the citrus keep the flesh from turning brown and decaying right in front of you. The same thing can happen in your pet’s body, because anti-oxidants neutralize free radicals. Your pets need Beta Carotene in supplement form to avoid cancer. If you have an outdoor cat who regularly hunts and eats its kills there is a greater risk of free radicals.

Make sure you feed your pet with a quality pet food. Read the labels of the pet food you purchase. If it’s made out of animal by products instead of real meat, with strange sounding additives that have no food value, or doesn’t have added supplements, you’re putting your pet at risk. Poor quality food won’t give your animal companion any more protection against cancer than it does you. Your animals need enough anti-oxidants to fight the free radical production that comes from a natural part of living. It is the lack of anti-oxidants that causes your cats and dogs to get cancer.

SAMIRA THE CALICO

Samira has the softest white coat you’ve ever touched, with random sized patches of black and rust, especially on her tail. She is both dainty and thug like. Will sit primly in your lap purring and accepting caresses until you think you’ve lost the use of both legs to circulation failure. And then suddenly lean over and bite her housemate, Trill, sleeping nearby. Or bound across the room in two leaps to attack, Phoebe, her other housemate. She also has daily skirmishes with an imaginary enemy that no one but she can see. She gets in such a frenzy chasing and running from this specter that I have photos of her twisting manically five feet in the air. She might suddenly decide that Trill needs grooming. And she can be a very aggressive groomer, sometimes using her tongue like a slap upside the head.

Sami is also a cancer survivor, but only because she underwent the terrifying ordeal of surgery to remove a tumor on her leg. Sami had a rough start in life, and the stress from the various elements of that ordeal are what caused her to get excess free radicals, which escalated into inflammation and cancer. I was around Sami while she had her surgery, and saw firsthand how unhappy it made her and her guardians. By supplementing your pets’ diets with Beta Carotene you can all avoid the cancer trauma.

The following was written by David Rubincam, who saved Samira’s life. It is excerpted from a longer version that first appeared in the online newsletter of Vashon Island Pet Protectors, a no kill nonprofit. For a photo of Samira visit vipp.org. Click “Adopt” and “Paw Print Stories.”

SAMIRA’S LONG JOURNEY TO THE UNITED STATES

I worked as the Legal Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2008. Nothing in the U.S. can prepare you for the harsh and inhospitable landscape in Saudi Arabia, which has the world’s largest desert, Rub al-Khali, and the dubious distinction of being a country with no permanent rivers or bodies of water. Yet even in the most unforgiving places, you can discover miracles that result from the actions of many good people. One of those miracles was Samira, whose name means “delightful companion,” in Arabic. I chose that name because it perfectly describes her, a small, mostly white Calico.

Unlike Americans, Saudis generally don’t keep pets. The cats you do see are usually street strays with a projected life span of four miserable years in the hostile, arid climate. Kittens usually die in their first week.

I spent time in a remote desert area at a security airbase protected by the Saudi Royal Guard and the U.S. Air Force. Just outside the entrance to the base, Samira gave birth to a litter of four kittens. By the time she was discovered, two of the kittens were dead. Knowing that the Americans had an Army vet assigned to the base, the Royal Guard kindly turned over the severely dehydrated and starving animals. The vet returned them to good health and placed the kittens in good homes.

But what to do about Sami? When it came to adoption, she had more than the harsh environment and the streets working against her. She had also apparently suffered blunt force trauma to the left side of her face, the kind that might result from hitting a wall or falling from a high distance, and possibly a stroke, which led to some paralysis and loss of feeling. She lost control over her left eye, which she can’t completely close or blink, and the left side of her mouth which lets a tooth protrude. Even her whiskers on the left are not as long or as full as the ones on the right side.

For nine months people came and stared at Sami, who is a truly beautiful cat, but saw only her handicaps and left without taking her. It didn’t help matters that she wouldn’t let anyone touch or pick her up. You risked getting scratched if you tried—if you could even get your hands on her; she was that fast. Still, the vet wouldn’t give up and kept looking for a home.

I happened across a photo of Sami on the clinic’s website, and was immediately smitten. I told myself it was okay to just look. I couldn’t easily adopt a cat, given my constraints. I thought it would be impossible to transport her back to Vashon at the end of my assignment. When I got to the clinic there were workers waiting in bemusement to see what would happen when I tried to pick her up. They warned me off, so I sat in a chair in front of her kennel, and didn’t approach her. She came out, sauntered directly over to me, hopped up on my lap, curled in my arms and purred. She stretched up and licked my face with a look in her eyes that said, “What took you so long?”

Everyone in the room realized immediately that I had just been adopted. Now I had to worry about the logistics of getting my new girl home. I made arrangements to pick her up the next day—which would also give me time to see what, if any, cat supplies I could find in Riyadh! When I returned, inside waiting to greet me and offer congratulations was the Air Base Commanding General, who it turns out is a “cat person” too. There were about 15 U.S. security personnel who had helped care for Sami over the past nine months, and had come to say goodbye. Most surprising was seeing that the Royal Guards who first found Sami had come to say goodbye as well. Despite her feisty nature she was a sweet presence and would be sorely missed by all.

It took two months to complete all the paperwork necessary to bring Samira home to Vashon Island, in Puget Sound. She needed an Export Permit from the Saudi Ministry of Agriculture, a European Union health certificate to land in France, and a U.S.D.A. Health Certificate to land and disembark at Sea-Tac. These documents were her “pet passport.” In the end, Samira came home in style, riding all the way to Seattle in the cabin with me.

The day we left, Samira was too sleepy to notice due to a sedative the vet gave her; something I was soon to regret. The first leg was from Riyadh to Paris. About half way through the seven-hour flight, Sami began to cry, scratch and bite at the webbed sides of the carrier. The sedative that worked according to prescription at ground level was suddenly affecting her like PCP, and she was freaking out. Fortunately, most of the airline crew were either “cat people,” or had seen this happen before. They let me take Sami into the crew’s lounge. After two hours the sedative wore off. Sami calmed down finally, genuinely exhausted from the ordeal. The Air France crew was incredibly supportive. They each came to see how she was doing, and brought her breakfast. To my surprise, even the airport veterinarian stopped by.

Sami is now at our home on Vashon, and has learned to trust my wife, Uwanna, and get along with at least Trill, one of our other two cats. We have to keep her separated from the baby, Phoebe. I believe the lesson of Samira’s story is that it took caring and charitable actions by a lot of people from a number of countries, backgrounds, and religions to save her and bring her here, to a loving home with acres of fenced property, where she is discovering the color green, cold weather, and yes—rain—for the first time. When it rains, and since this is Seattle that means all the time, she can’t wait to get outside and play in it. It fascinates her!

Epilogue: Sami is healthy and cancer free, still a little crazy, and living in Moscow with her guardians and housemate cats. She’s quite the international gadabout.

Beta Carotene will neutralize free radicals in your pet’s system, but it needs the help of Vitamin D3, which assists Beta Carotene in its free radical fighting functions; and Lecithin, which will break up blockages and cellular wastes generated by free radicals.

NOTES

► If Beta Carotene is taken without also taking Vitamin D, it will deplete the stores of Vitamin D and a Vitamin D deficiency may develop. As a rule, Beta Carotene and Vitamin D should always be taken together.

► I have recommended Puritan’s Pride brand because their Lecithin is from soybeans only, and contains a minimum of 70 mg of phosphatides in each 1200 mg softgel, equivalent to 61 percent phosphatides. The value of a Lecithin product is determined by the percentage of phosphatides it contains, because they activate the emulsifying process in mammals. You may use another brand, but make sure it conforms to or exceeds these specifications or it will not work.

YOU DON’T NEED VIAGRA OR CIALIS TO BE READY ANYTIME

CATEGORY: 3: Blockage

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENT: Lecithin

close up of linked hands of couple

One caveat with this blog is that the therapy will work if the problems are indeed physical, and caused by a slowdown of blood flow to the penis. It won’t work if the problems are psychological, in your head—like maybe you don’t like your partner so much anymore, or you lost a bundle in a bad investment and aren’t feeling very sexy at this time.

On the other hand, if you have trouble performing when you really want to, that can mess with your mind and cause its own set of psychological problems, even though the cause is truly physical. For that reason, let’s start by assuming the problem is physical for now, and that Lecithin can help you. A few men will notice improvement the same day they start Lecithin therapy. Some within 72 hours of regular use. For others it could take as much as 21 to 30 days of regular use. But it will work. If it’s physical, and there isn’t some other profound medical problem going on.

The most common reason for an inability to achieve and hold on to an erection is a blockage in the blood vessels inside the penis. An erection is all about blood flow—into, and out of, the penis. The more blood flowing into the penis the more rigid will be the erection. The more constricted the blood flow, the limper will be the penis. If not enough blood gets into the penis in time, or if too much blood flows out of it too soon, full erection is not possible to achieve or maintain.

All that the common medications do is cause more blood to flow into the penis and to be held there. Sometimes for too long past arousal, and hence the four hour erection warning. But Lecithin can do this naturally, so you don’t have to worry about drug side effects or being ready at the right moment. You will be ready whenever you want to be. You may even experience spontaneous erections for no reason as men do when they’re fairly young.

Tip: Penis Size: Men make a big deal about penis size. There are all sorts of tongue-in-cheek references in movies, TV, and books, to the point that the “size matters” allusion has entered the popular lexicon. I have news for guys. Even though orgasm and ejaculation are possible without a full erection, all the women I’ve ever talked to care less about size and more about the erection. To most women, the strength of the erection is far more important than the size of the penis. If it’s small but hard, you can make your partner happy. If it’s large but limp, they won’t be nearly as impressed. Size doesn’t matter, but hardness does.

WHAT HAPPENS INSIDE YOUR BODY TO CAUSE AN ERECTION

When you are sexually stimulated, physically or psychologically, the brain sends messages to your penis that relax the smooth muscles in and around the blood vessel walls of the corpus cavernosum, causing them to open wider and fill with blood. It is this increased blood flow that gets the penis to harden and enlarge.

Definition: Corpus Cavernosum: The inner shaft of the penis is divided into two side-by-side erectile tunnels. Together they make up the corpus cavernosum. Inside both tunnels is a spongy tissue that consists of smooth muscle and lots of blood vessels. It is these blood vessels that are responsible for creating an erection. They determine whether the erection is strong or weak, based on the amount of blood they receive and hold on to.

At the same time the blood vessels in the penis are filling up, the veins that carry blood away from the penis shut down, causing an increase in blood pressure that swells the penis and traps blood there. It is this trapped blood that keeps the penis hard and erect.

If the blood vessel walls in the penis become blocked with plaque and other organic debris, blood can’t get inside, and you won’t be able to have a full erection. The blood vessels in the penis are part of your body’s complex arterial system. That same system feeds your brain and heart and stomach—all parts of you. A blockage in brain arteries will lead to stroke and or Alzheimer’s. A blockage in the arteries feeding the heart will lead to angina and or heart attack. A blockage in stomach arteries will lead to incredible pain and digestion problems. And a blockage in the blood vessels of the penis will prevent full, or even any erection.

That’s why you find men with heart disease, Alzheimer’s, or other blockage disorders, who also can’t achieve erection. It’s not because the disease is causing the failure, but that all the conditions stem from the same cause—blockages within a closed arterial system. Problems getting and maintaining an erection also have little to do with age. Men are told that their reactions will take longer as they age. But this is true only because the older a man’s body gets, the more time has passed in which blockages can begin, accumulate, and decrease blood flow to the penis.

If you can eliminate the blockages preventing full and unfettered blood flow to the penis, you will eliminate most erectile dysfunction.

HOW DO BLOCKAGES FORM IN THE BODY?

When you eat something your body has trouble processing, like a double bacon cheeseburger with extra mayo, French fries, onion rings, and a deep fried Snickers bar, without also providing it with an emulsifier, it stores the left over gunk it can’t get rid of in all sorts of inner nooks and crannies. Just like you do in real life. But instead of a drawer, closet or garage, the body stores it in a number of places, including the arteries in your penis.

Blockages are a whole separate category of diseases unto themselves in my paradigm of wellness. Looking in from the outside, we may call it erectile dysfunction, but it’s actually a blockage masquerading as erectile dysfunction. It could also “pretend” to be Alzheimer’s, heart disease, lung congestion, or a stiff elbow joint. Your arterial pathways have to be kept clear or you will be at risk for many blockage diseases besides erectile dysfunction. But all of the blockage disorders, including erectile dysfunction can be treated successfully with Lecithin.

USING THE EMULSIFYING POWERS OF LECITHIN TO ENSURE FULL ERECTIONS WHENEVER AROUSAL IS PRESENT

Lecithin is a natural substance extracted from soybean oil. It is known to be safe, and has been used in our food supply since the early 1900’s. Take a look in your cabinets at the boxes, jars, cans, and bottles there. Lecithin is used as an ingredient in countless foods and cosmetics, because of its ability to emulsify, stabilize, thicken, and moisturize. It also has great suspension qualities.

Without Lecithin, when you opened a box of biscuit mix, it wouldn’t come out in a nice powdery stream, but would plop into your bowl with clumps. Without Lecithin, facial moisturizer wouldn’t be creamy and smooth, but would show the oils coagulated and greasy. Without Lecithin, mayonnaise would be a congealed mess, unspreadable. Likewise, peanut butter. Lecithin is what keeps ingredients in suspension, as a mixture, and keeps the oils from separating from the other ingredients.

It’s Lecithin’s ability to keep organic particles in suspension—and to break up those that have hardened into plaque—that makes it such a valuable food supplement. It does the same thing in your body as it does in the food container: keeps organic particles suspended, not allowing them to clump together. Each Lecithin molecule binds with an organic molecule and prevents it from joining with other similar molecules, by holding it in suspension while it travels through your body and is expelled. Without sufficient Lecithin in your system, oils, fats, and other organic compounds can clump together, solidify, clog up and cause blockages in vital areas, like the penis.

While Lecithin prevents blockages in the arteries that prevent sufficient blood flow from getting into the penis, two other supplements are important and should be added to the Lecithin therapy.

First is Rutin, one of the elements of the Vitamin C Complex. If you’re having problems getting full erections, you have to worry not only about blood getting into the penis, which Lecithin will solve, but also that it doesn’t leave the penis until you are finished. Rutin will strengthen the walls of the entire arterial system, including the veins that are supposed to shut down and trap blood in the penile blood vessels. If these vein walls are weak they can’t trap the blood, which will flow out of the penis prematurely, causing a loss of erection despite sufficient blood flow in.

Second is Gingko Biloba, an herb and a mild but effective natural blood thinner. It will help more blood get through the blockages while Lecithin is cleaning them out.

NOTES

► When you use Lecithin regularly, in the beginning you will notice other things happening because of its emulsifying abilities. It will clean out not just the arteries in the penis, but throughout the entire arterial system. You may notice that you are coughing up and blowing out of your nose a lot more mucous than usual, because that is one of the body’s channels for getting rid of waste. This is happening because Lecithin is breaking up blockages and causing the wastes to be expelled. This is a good sign and after a while, as more and more organic debris is cleaned out of your body this will end.

► I have recommended Puritan’s Pride brand because their Lecithin is from soybeans only, and contains a minimum of 732 mg of phosphatides in each 1200 mg softgel, equivalent to 61 percent phosphatides. The value of a Lecithin product is determined by the percentage of phosphatides it contains, because they activate the emulsifying process in your body. You may use another brand but make sure it conforms to or exceeds these specifications or it will not work.

Lecithin Granules are best used in blender drinks and sprinkled on salads, fresh cut fruit, and cereals. Make sure to consume it uncooked, in its natural state. One heaping tablespoon is equal to six softgels. You can’t take too much, so feel free to use additional amounts liberally.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Ginkgo Biloba is an effective natural blood thinner. If you are on a prescription blood thinner, like Coumadin, know that Ginkgo Biloba will duplicate your prescription medication.

PREVENT AND ELIMINATE ANY TYPE CAUSED BY A BLOCKAGE

CATEGORY: 3: Blockage

https://lynncapehartwellness.com/2013/09/01/blog-30-essay-2-the-seven-categories-of-illness/

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENT: LECITHIN

I watched Barbara Walters’ TV special on heart disease recently. She and her guests—former President Bill Clinton, David Letterman, Robin Williams, Regis Philbin, and Charlie Rose—all had open heart surgery to perform bypasses to blocked coronary arteries. She also spoke to Luke Russert, journalist Tim Russert’s son, about his father’s sudden death from heart disease at 58.

Walters and her guests are comfortable in front of a camera. They all put on their bravest professional faces, and didn’t share what the surgery is really like. Who wants to relive such a horrific experience? My heart went out to every one of them.

Walters wanted her Special to be upbeat, about surviving, about beating the odds, about new beginnings. Not the stalking death that brushed so very close as it passed them by this time. Not the gut-wrenching physical abuse the surgery entails. Not the all consuming stress. And she succeeded. The Special brought uplift and imparted information. Good job.

WHAT REALLY HAPPENS IN OPEN HEART SURGERY

But let’s take a brief look anyway, at a little of what they actually went through, maybe as an incentive to try harder to avoid this hideous, medieval procedure, called open heart surgery. Because I promise you, guarantee to you, that there is an easier way. If the people on Walters’ Special had used Lecithin regularly, the blockages would never have been able to form, and they never would have needed the surgery. I am going to tell you how to avoid what they went through, how to avoid the following:

A VERY CONDENSED OVERVIEW OF OPEN HEART MISERY

1.         First there’s the emotional agony of dragging around the soul-chewing, spirit-killing information of what you’re about to go through. Having your dreams haunted by it.

2.         Then being rolled into the cold, sterile, white room on a gurney, fingers secretly crossed under the blanket, because you Googled this procedure and you know that while the survival rates are good, they aren’t 100 percent. You know the masks are important, but still wish you could see people’s faces. The room smells too clean.

3.         They move you from the gurney to the operating table and commence putting tubes in your arms and other places. In a few minutes you are gratefully unconscious, lying there vulnerable in every sense, your life in another person’s hands.

4.         After slicing open your chest, your sternum (breastbone) is cracked in half, sawed through and separated, so the surgeons can get their skilled hands on your heart. Their hands and those lovely steel instruments. And if you are bothered by the sound of your dentist’s drill, just be glad you’re out cold while this is happening.

5.         Next, your doctor decides from where to get the grafts to make the bypasses. Perhaps he’ll cut up your thoracic chest artery, which is more easily isolated than others in the area, or maybe sacrifice one of the veins in your legs. There is a higher purpose here, can’t worry about collateral damage.

6.         At some point your heart may be stopped, stopped!, and you are connected to a heart-lung machine that will provide circulation for your body. You are now technically dead. The pump is keeping you “alive.”

If you are not put on-pump and your heart is not stopped, your doctors will stabilize your heart with other medical “devices.”

7.         Then they go to work cutting open and replacing sections of three, four, or even an amazing five of your blocked coronary arteries, with the grafting material they harvested from other parts of you.

8.         Finally, 6 or 10 or even 20 hours later your surgery is complete. You are then stitched up like an old suit. If you were “on-pump” your heart is restarted, hopefully. Your sternum is creaked back into place like pieces of broken china and fastened with stainless steel wires, which will stay in your chest permanently. Your chest cavity skin is sewed up with more sutures. Tubes are left in your chest for a while to drain the cavity of normal post-operative bleeding.

9.         You spend 1 to 2 days in Critical Care, maybe on a respirator for part of the time, 2-3 more in the hospital before discharge. The cracked sternum takes up to a year or more to heal completely. You hear that a small percentage of people report cracking in their chests when bending or stretching, even years later.

Charlie Rose described it as, “hell.”

I do not want to make light of the efforts of the doctors and support staff who do their best in these surgeries, who save lives every day. Superior medical teams saved Walters and her guests, who might not be alive otherwise.

But my point is that this surgery is barbaric given the available alternative, which is to take a handful of Lecithin softgels twice daily. It’s cheap, it’s effective, it’s easy on the stomach, there are no side effects, and it works fast. I’ve seen people scheduled for heart surgery avoid it with Lecithin therapy. Compare the options. Do you choose supplements or surgery? Because it’s one of the biggest decisions of your life.

Clinton spoke frankly about his 90 percent blockage and quadruple bypass. His cardiology appointment was on a Friday. His doctors wouldn’t let him leave the hospital for the weekend, fearing he wouldn’t be alive Monday morning for the surgery. But the most helpful comments came from Letterman and Russert.

Letterman, along with Walters, had five coronary arteries blocked, necessitating a remarkable, “quintuple” bypass! (Remember when a “double bypass” sounded like a big deal? Do you suppose there are sextuple, or septuple, or even octuple bypasses in our future?)

Maybe it was easier for Letterman to be real with us. He’s used to bearing his soul five nights a week. We’re more than an audience, we’re his therapy couch. We’ve been through the triumphs and travails with him and still love him. Maybe that’s why Dave said real things like, “I would find myself busting into tears and sobbing uncontrollably . . . [the surgery] assaults every part of your system . . . [the experience] is horrendous mentally, emotionally, and physically.”

Letterman’s best insight was in the statement, “I wouldn’t be surprised to have to have the surgery again.” In fact, unless he adds Lecithin, an emulsifier, to his diet, he can pretty well count on it. Even now, blockages are forming slowly in his arteries again. According to cardiologists, it’s not unusual to have two or three follow up surgeries in connection with the original one, sometimes to add stents to the new bypasses that have collapsed, not to mention needing the procedure all over again for new blockages that form.

Walters asked Luke Russert how his father could pass a stress test in April and die of a heart attack in June, despite being on medication for asymptomatic (no symptoms) coronary artery disease. His doctors reported that built up deposits of cholesterol plaque in an artery had ruptured, causing sudden coronary thrombosis—death, where all blood to the heart is stopped suddenly by a complete blockage.

The only answer to Walters’ question is that you can have an arterial blockage large enough to kill you and still pass a stress test on a given day. But Luke’s answer was broader and more to the point. He said, “There is not enough known about heart disease, especially prevention.”

And that’s the real problem here, that our attempts to prevent heart disease are so feeble and archaic.

YOU CAN HAVE A HEART ATTACK EVEN IF YOU ARE FIT

Just as a stress test is not a good predictor of coronary blockages, being a trim fit athlete doesn’t mean you’re safe from heart attack, either: Remember Jim Fixx, the champion long distance runner credited with helping start America’s fitness revolution? Author of The Complete Book of Running? He started running at the age of 35, quit smoking, lost 60 pounds. He was found dead at 52 by the side of Vermont Route 15, from a massive heart attack while running. His father, a former editor at TIME, had died of a heart attack at 43, but Fixx was a big red-meat eater anyway. An autopsy revealed blockages of 95 percent, 85 percent, and 70 percent in three of his main coronary arteries.

And blockages are not just an older person’s disorder: The US Army did a two year study of new recruits, ages 18 to 21, and discovered that over half of them already had 35 percent arterial obstruction.

Take a look at what you and your family eat. Chances are if it’s high fat, starch or cholesterol, it’s going to spend a long time in your bodies. Remember that last fatty meal smothered in butter sauce that you so enjoyed? Well, if you don’t use Lecithin regularly, parts of that meal are still hanging around inside your body, clinging to the walls of your arteries, setting up future blockage disorders like heart disease. Even if you ate it five years ago.

You don’t have to forego your favorite comfort foods, just cut back a bit, and take precautions like adding Lecithin to your diet. I love butter, I love mayonnaise, I don’t like substitutes. If I’m eating it, I want the real thing. But I take Lecithin every single day, more when I pig out during the holidays.

I’m particularly saddened by Clinton’s surgery: After the press started mocking “Bubba’s” eating habits, I sent him a gift copy of Vitamin Remedies That Really Work, with a bookmark at chapter 9, Lecithin. I told him he could eat burgers and cheese fries once in a while, but he needed to take an emulsifier. Otherwise, he would face heart disease later in life. I never heard back except a thank you note. Obviously, he didn’t take my advice. But if Clinton starts taking Lecithin, he will live to see not only Chelsea’s children, but her children’s children. If not, it won’t be a “blockage” disorder like heart disease that does him in.

WOMEN ARE AT SPECIAL RISK

Despite all her guests being men, Walters informed us that more women die of heart disease now than do men. Heart disease is the number one killer of women. According to the American Heart Association, more than one in five females has some form of cardiovascular disease, which takes the lives of more than a half million women every year. That’s more than the next five causes of death for women . . . combined.

Worse news is that the kind of heart disease women get, and the way it behaves, is often different than in men. For instance, we’re all familiar with pains in the arm or chest that signal an imminent attack, but did you know that women present with entirely different symptoms, and that they may appear up to a month before the attack?

The National Institute of Health reports that the most commonly reported symptoms of heart attack in women are unusual fatigue (71%), sleep disturbance (48%), and shortness of breath (42%). Fewer than a third of women reported having chest pains. Almost half reported having no chest pain at any time. Some women reported a feeling of unusual “weakness” in one or both arms.

HEART DISEASE BEGINS WITH DIET

Heart disease is directly attributable to what you eat. It starts with fats, starches, and high-cholesterol foods, ones that cause “blockages.” Our bodies are not equipped to properly process such a diet without additional help from an emulsifier.

HOW DO BLOCKAGES FORM IN THE CORONARY ARTERIES?

When you eat something your body has trouble processing, like a sirloin steak with butter sauce and a fried egg, baked potato with bacon bits and sour cream, green salad with blue cheese dressing, and crème brulee, without also providing it with an emulsifier, it stores the left over gunk in all sorts of inner nooks and crannies. Just like you do in real life. But instead of a drawer, closet or garage, the body stores it in your arteries, your heart, your lungs, sinus, joints, liver, kidney, gallbladder, penis, spinal cord, colon, eyes, any old place it finds room. In the process it causes you to get sick with a blockage disorder, like heart disease.

Blockages are a whole subset of diseases unto themselves in my paradigm of wellness. From the outside it may look like a multitude of different disorders, like heart disease, or Alzheimer’s, or a blocked sinus, or erectile dysfunction, or lung congestion, or peripheral artery disease, or glaucoma, or a blood clot, but it’s actually a blockage masquerading as a plethora of different problems. A diet that causes blockages puts you at risk for many disorders besides heart disease. But all of the blockage disorders can be treated successfully with Lecithin, an emulsifier.

Your major organs depend on a constant flow of blood for oxygen and nourishment. Your heart muscle is no different. But if the arteries—the pathways that carry blood and oxygen—become blocked with plaque and solidified organic debris, less and less blood, and therefore nourishment, gets through. Without proper nourishment and enough oxygen from this steady blood supply, your heart will fail.

Think of an army using a road to get supplies to the troops. Think of your heart as those troops waiting for the supplies. If the road becomes blocked with disabled vehicles, it will be impossible for supply trucks to get through. That makes it necessary to send in additional troops for the sole purpose of removing the blockage on the road. Once the blockage is gone, the trucks can roll. Think of Lecithin as those additional troops sent in to remove the blockage so the supply lines to your heart can be kept open.

USING THE EMULSIFYING POWERS OF LECITHIN TO KEEP YOUR ARTERIES OPEN WITHOUT SURGERY, STENT, OR ANGIOPLASTY

[Definitions: SURGERY: open heart or valve replacement; STENT: a flexible tube made of plastic or wire mesh to support and prop open weakened arteries in collapse; ANGIOPLASTY: a balloon used instead of or along with a stent to support and prop open weakened arteries in collapse.]

Lecithin is an emulsifier and therefore has great abilities to keep organic particles in suspension, as a mixture. It is a natural substance extracted from soybean oil. It is known to be safe, and has been used in our food supply since the early 1900’s. Take a look in your cabinets. Lecithin is used as an ingredient in countless foods and cosmetics, because of its ability to emulsify, stabilize, thicken, and moisturize.

Without Lecithin, when you opened a box of biscuit mix, it wouldn’t come out in a nice powdery stream, but would plop into your bowl in funky clumps. Without Lecithin, your facial moisturizer wouldn’t be creamy and smooth when you stick your finger in, but would show the oils coagulated and greasy. Without Lecithin, your mayonnaise would be a congealed mess, unspreadable. Likewise, your peanut butter. Lecithin is what keeps ingredients in suspension, as a mixture, and keeps oils from separating from each other and other ingredients.

It’s Lecithin’s ability to keep organic particles in suspension that makes it such a valuable food supplement. Is it such a huge leap from witnessing Lecithin’s known properties on other organic and biological material outside our bodies to understanding that it can do the same thing inside them? To me it is a straight line of logic.

Lecithin does the same thing in your body as it does in the food and cosmetic container: keeps organic particles suspended, not allowing them to clump together. In your system, each Lecithin molecule binds with an organic waste molecule and prevents it from joining with other similar molecules, by holding it in suspension while it travels through your body and can be safely expelled.

Without enough Lecithin in your diet, oils, fats, and other organic compounds will clump together, accumulate, solidify, clog up vital areas, and cause blockage disorders like heart disease. With enough Lecithin, plaque and other organic debris will be held in suspension and will not settle on the walls of your coronary arteries.

Common forms of heart disease:

1.         Atherosclerosis: This is a chronic progressive disorder, meaning it doesn’t go away naturally and gets worse over time. The lining of the arteries gets blocked by built up deposits of everything from cholesterol, fats, calcification, and abnormal cells, to organic debris that turns into plaques. Your body cannot break up and expel these deposits without help from an emulsifier.

2.         Coronary Artery Disease: This is the same condition as Atherosclerosis, except it refers only to a blockage in coronary arteries—the specific vessels that supply blood to the heart muscle.

3.         Valvular Heart Disease: This is a problem with a heart valve whose function is to maintain the forward flow of blood through the heart by opening and closing when appropriate. It manifests as a blockage in the valve, slowing down blood flow, or an ill fitting valve that permits leakage when closed, probably also caused by a partial blockage.

4.         Angina Pain: This is chest pain, sometimes excruciating, that occurs when a blockage from one of the above disorders gets large enough to slow down the flow of blood to a particular part of the heart muscle.

5.         Myocardial Infarction: This is a heart attack, usually occurring due to a blockage in the coronary arteries that disrupts the flow of blood to the heart muscle. It is the end result of one or more of the above disorders.

Look at all of these definitions for heart disease. Every one of them contains some form of the word blockage. That means if you could find a way to stop blockages from forming, you would essentially end all heart disease. No blockage, no heart disease.

The smartest path is prevention. If you wait for a heart attack before changing your diet, first you may not survive it, and second, even if you do survive you are going to pay dearly for it. And I’m not talking about your bank account.

PREVENTING HEART DISEASE: REMEDY AT A GLANCE CHART

Beta Carotene 20 softgels (or more) 20 softgels (or more) Puritan’s Pride #1223 25,000 IU (equivalent to 15 mg)
Vitamin D3 2 softgel 2 softgel Puritan’s Pride #15606 2000 mg

NOTES

Remember, these are not pills you’re taking, but concentrated food supplements. This isn’t medicine. It’s nutrition.

Lecithin is the best natural emulsifier available, and will safely break up blockages in your coronary arteries or anywhere in your body. Co-Enzyme Q10 strengthens the heart muscle. Beta Carotene will fight inflammation that accompanies plaque buildup. Vitamin D3 will assist Beta Carotene in its functions. (If you cannot find Vitamin D3, you may use Vitamin D.)

I have recommended Puritan’s Pride brand because their Lecithin is from soybeans only, and contains a minimum of 70 mg of phosphatides in each 1200 mg softgel, equivalent to 61 percent phosphatides. The value of a Lecithin product is determined by the percentage of phosphatides it contains, because they activate the fat emulsifying process in your body. You may use another brand but make sure it conforms to these specifications or it will not work as I described.

When you use Lecithin regularly, in the beginning you will notice that you are coughing up and blowing out of your nose, a lot more mucous than usual. This is happening because Lecithin is breaking up blockages and causing mucous and other wastes to be expelled. This is a good sign and will taper off as your body cleans itself.

Lecithin will NOT cause chunks of plaque to rupture, fall off the artery wall and into your bloodstream, threatening a flow stoppage. Lecithin works on a molecular level, mincing away at the blockage, breaking off molecule-sized bits and escorting them through your blood stream (like a cop holding onto a criminal), keeping them in suspension (under arrest), and making sure they don’t team up with other criminals (clump together and cause a blockage), until they can be disposed of safely.

Lecithin Granules are best used in blender drinks and sprinkled on salads, fresh cut fruit, and cereals. Make sure to consume it uncooked, in its natural state. You can use it in cooked recipes for texture and smoothness, but those amounts do not count toward your daily maintenance dose.

One heaping tablespoon of Lecithin Granules is equal to six softgels. You can’t take too much. Feel free to use additional amounts liberally.

If you take more Beta Carotene than your body can process you might get a mild, dull headache. It lasts as long as it takes your body to utilize the extra Beta Carotene, usually a couple hours. Some people get an itchy rash for a couple hours that can be relieved with Benadryl. There are no other side effects because Beta Carotene will not harm you. It will not turn your skin or the whites of your eyes orange, but in larger doses it will turn your feces that color.

If you take Beta Carotene without also taking Vitamin D, you will deplete your stores of Vitamin D and develop a Vitamin D deficiency. It usually manifests as sores on the inside of the mouth. Be sure to take Vitamin D when you take Beta Carotene and there will be no problem.

Do not take mixed carotenoid products. They are a marketing gimmick, do not bestow additional benefits to you, and will not work as I have described. Use only straight up Beta Carotene.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO LOSE YOUR MIND

CATEGORY: 3: Blockage

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENT: LECITHIN

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. As of 2010, over five million Americans had the disease, while over 35 million suffer from it worldwide. Dementia worsens over time, progressing from forgetting people and things, to difficult and stubborn behaviors, to psychotic and delusional states. Your doctor may not know what causes it, but I do.

There is also a shadow population in America of eleven million unpaid caregivers who are adversely effected by the disease, and who are generally emotionally drained and physically exhausted by the need to provide constant physical care to another adult. Alzheimer’s also negatively affects everyone around the person suffering from the disorder, not just the caregivers.

Alzheimer’s is not a pretty way to go, either. In fact, it’s plenty scary. By the time the end comes you’re completely useless. All that trouble and expense you went to educating yourself, honing your talent, creating and presenting a cool, savvy persona to the public? Gone. Maybe you were a hotshot before, but now, you’re someone completely dependent on others, a little drooly, who can’t remember what you had for breakfast, the name of your favorite grandchild, your shoe size, or even how to dress yourself. Everything you are is in your mind—for you, as well as others. Lose it and you lose your world, your self.

But, like everything that goes wrong with the body, short of outside inflicted injury, there is a simple explanation for Alzheimer’s that is directly connected to diet, and a serious nutrient deficiency. That’s all any disease is, you know, a titanic deficiency of one or more nutrients. Alzheimer’s is simply a blockage in your brain arteries created by a diet with too many starches and fats, and insufficient supplementation with Lecithin, an emulsifier.

If you give your body what it needs you can avoid or eliminate Alzheimer’s, meaning you can even bring people back, out of the fog. Up to a point. The sooner you change the person’s diet the better, because a time may come when too many brain cells and neurons have died for her to be fully regained to her prior self. But it’s a wide window of opportunity, and many people have been brought back to themselves with this therapy. You have nothing to lose by trying and a mind to save.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. PRESIDENT

The year 2011 is the centennial celebration of Ronald Wilson Reagan’s birthday, February 6, 1911. I just read “Grace Under Fire” in TIME magazine, by Patti Davis, commemorating her father’s birthday today. She writes a poignant piece that could only be penned by a daughter who had been there for the glory and the demise. According to Davis, by the time he died of Alzheimer’s, Ronald Reagan did not remember being president of the United States. Number 40.

Think about that for a minute.

It takes a lot of hard work and endurance to get to be president. Campaigning to get to the White House, actually doing the job, getting reelected, shaping a legacy. But President Reagan didn’t remember any of it. Not the adoring crowds who showed up wherever he spoke, not spearheading Reaganomics, not winning 49 states in a landslide reelection, not fathering the Reagan Revolution, not helping end the Cold War, not saying, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” in 1987, and then watching it happen two years later.

That’s a lot to give up.

Anyone who knew Ronald Reagan even remotely knows that after being Nancy’s husband, and a father to his children, being President of his country was one of his proudest and most cherished memories. Yet Dementia stole all that. Midway through his Alzheimer’s years, Davis says her father didn’t even recognize her.

THERE ARE OTHERS

A lot of talented people succumb to Alzheimer’s. Besides President Reagan the following are a few taken by the disease.

George Balanchine: dancer, choreographer

Rita Hayworth: actress

Joyce Chen: chef

Harold Wilson: British Prime Minister

Charlton Heston: actor

Barry Goldwater: Arizona U.S. Senator and Presidential candidate

Aaron Copeland, composer

James Doohan: actor who played Scotty on Star Trek

E. B. White: author of the Stuart Little books for children

Sugar Ray Robinson: welterweight and middleweight boxing champ

Charles Bronson: actor

Perry Como: singer

Norman Rockwell: artist

Joe Adcock: baseball player

Vincent Minnelli: director and father of Liza

Raul Silva Henriquez: Roman Catholic cardinal & human rights advocate

Thomas A. Dorsey: father of gospel music

Burgess Meredith: actor

Alfred Van Vogt, science fiction writer

Bill Quackenbush: pro hockey hall of famer

Otto Preminger: director

Dana Andrews: actor

Kay Smith: composer

Edmond O’Brien: actor

Tom Fears: pro football hall of famer and coach

Louis Feraud: fashion designer

Jack Lord: actor from original Hawaii Five-O TV series

Rudolph Bing: opera impresario

Arlene Francis: actress

James Brooks: artist

Abe Burrows: author and commentator

And many others.

There exists the strong likelihood that none of these people would have died of Dementia if their diets had included Lecithin, an effective emulsifier.

LIKE MOST HEALTH PROBLEMS IT BEGINS WITH DIET

Forget genetic markers. I don’t care who your relatives are, Alzheimer’s is a disease directly attributable to what you eat. Dementia is twice as likely to develop in blacks as it is in whites, and 1.5 times more common among Hispanics, according to a new national report. These groups are getting higher numbers for Alzheimer’s simply because there are more of them eating diets high in fats and starches. One that causes “blockages.” Our bodies cannot properly process such a diet, without additional help from an emulsifier.

HOW DO BLOCKAGES FORM IN THE BODY?

When you eat something your body has trouble processing, like a double bacon cheeseburger with extra mayo, French fries, onion rings, and a deep fried Snickers bar, without also providing it with an emulsifier, it stores the left over gunk in all sorts of inner nooks and crannies. Just like you do in real life. But instead of a drawer, closet or garage, the body stores it in your arteries, your lungs, sinus, joints, liver, kidneys, heart, gallbladder, penis, spinal cord, colon, eyes, any old place it finds room, because it can’t get rid of it without an emulsifier. In the process it causes you to get sick with a blockage disorder.

Blockages are a whole category of diseases unto themselves in my paradigm of wellness. From the outside, it may look like Alzheimer’s, or heart disease, or a blocked sinus, or erectile dysfunction, or lung congestion, or peripheral artery disease, or glaucoma, or a blood clot, but it’s actually a blockage masquerading as a plethora of different problems. Your arterial pathways have to be kept clear or you will be at risk for many blockage diseases besides Alzheimer’s. But all of the blockage disorders, including Alzheimer’s, can be treated successfully with Lecithin.

The cells in your body depend on a constant flow of blood for oxygen and nourishment. Your brain is no different. But if the arteries—the pathways that carry that blood and oxygen—become blocked with plaque and solidified organic debris, less and less blood, and therefore nourishment, gets through. Without proper nourishment and enough oxygen from a steady blood supply, brain cells and neurons will eventually die in great numbers. As they die you lose your ability to remember, think, calculate and judge.

Think of an army using a road to get supplies to the front. Think of your brain cells as the troops at the front. If the road becomes blocked with disabled vehicles, it will be impossible for supply trucks to get through. Without sufficient supplies, the troops will starve and die. That makes it necessary to send in additional troops for the sole purpose of removing the blockage on the road. Once the blockage is gone, the trucks can roll and supplies can reach the troops at the front. Think of Lecithin as those additional troops sent in to remove the blockage, so that the supply lines to your brain cells can be kept open.

USING THE EMULSIFYING POWERS OF LECITHIN TO KEEP YOUR BRAIN ALIVE

Lecithin is a natural substance extracted from soybean oil. It is known to be safe, and has been used in our food supply since the early 1900’s. Take a look in your cabinets at the boxes, jars, cans, and bottles there. Lecithin is used as an ingredient in countless foods and cosmetics, because of its ability to emulsify, stabilize, thicken, and moisturize. It also has great suspension qualities.

Without Lecithin, when you opened a box of biscuit mix, it wouldn’t come out in a nice powdery stream, but would plop into your bowl in clumps. Without Lecithin, your facial moisturizer wouldn’t be creamy and smooth when you stick your finger in, but would show the oils coagulated and greasy. Without Lecithin, your mayonnaise would be a congealed mess, unspreadable. Likewise, your peanut butter. Lecithin is what keeps ingredients in suspension, as a mixture, and keeps the oils from separating from the other ingredients.

It’s Lecithin’s ability to keep organic particles in suspension that makes it such a valuable food supplement. It does the same thing in your body as it does in the food container: keeps organic particles suspended in your blood stream, not allowing them to clump together. Each Lecithin molecule binds with an organic molecule and prevents it from joining with other similar molecules, by holding it in suspension while it travels through your body and is expelled. Without sufficient Lecithin in your system, oils, fats, and other organic compounds can clump together, solidify, clog up vital areas, and cause “blockages.”

Lecithin prevents plaque and other organic debris from settling on the artery walls in your brain, slowing down the blood supply, and causing dementia.

NOTES

Remember, these are not pills you’re taking, but concentrated food supplements. This isn’t medicine. It’s nutrition.

Lecithin is the best natural emulsifier available, and will break up blockages in your brain or anywhere in your body. L-Glutamine is an amino acid, one of the building blocks of protein. It is considered brain food and can have a remarkable effect on improving the brain’s ability to learn, think, reason, and remember. It also facilitates the transfer of communication between the two hemispheres of the brain. Ginkgo Biloba is an herb and a blood thinner, and assists in immediately getting more nutrients to the under served areas of your brain. Once the plaque is severe enough in your brain arteries to cause dementia, there will also be inflammation, which Beta Carotene will stop. Vitamin D3 will assist Beta Carotene in its processes, and it is a better, safer, more natural form of Vitamin D. But if you can only get Vitamin D you may use it instead.

When you use Lecithin regularly, in the beginning you will notice that you are coughing up and blowing out of your nose, a lot more mucus than usual. This is happening because Lecithin is breaking up blockages and causing mucous and other wastes to be expelled. This is a good sign and after a while, as more and more organic debris is cleaned out of your body, you will find less and less mucous needing to be expelled.

I have recommended Puritan’s Pride brand because their Lecithin is from soybeans only, and contains a minimum of 70 mg of phosphatides in each 1200 mg softgel, equivalent to 61 percent phosphatides. CONTRAINDICATIONS

Ginkgo Biloba is an effective natural blood thinner. If you are on a prescription blood thinner, like Coumadin, know that Ginkgo Biloba will duplicate your prescription medication.

Do not take mixed carotene products. They are a marketing gimmick, do not bestow any additional benefits to you, and will not work. Use only straight up Beta Carotene.
