CHERYL HAS SIX WEEKS TO CURE HER CANCER WITH ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE OR FACE BREAST REMOVAL SURGERY IF IT DOESN’T WORK

Cheryl’s surgery is already scheduled for mid April 2016. She booked it as far out as was safe, to give my health supplement treatment as much time as possible to work. She has a great fear of going under the knife and coming out with fewer parts than she went in with. Or maybe not coming out at all. It happens.

Her name isn’t really Cheryl. She is a real person, and everything else written here about her is true. I promise anyone who comes to me for help, especially with cancer, that they can go through the treatment anonymously. Cheryl does not want her family, friends, or church to know. She believes that sharing it would make everything harder on her. She doesn’t like a lot of fuss. She will tell them when it’s over. I have agreed to honor her wish.

Cheryl is 5’2.” In her 60s. Blue-eyed and buxomy with blond hair to her waist. She’s smart, independent, quick witted, and practical. She gives a lot of sass and likes to flirt. She is rock solid dependable with a strong work ethic. She likes to play by the rules and wants others to do the same. When she smiles her eyes twinkle.

Cheryl drives a red 1969 Mustang. She speeds so often in her convertible that the police in her small town have taken to mailing her the speeding ticket rather than chasing her down, which she seems to enjoy a bit too much for their tastes.

Cheryl has no children but she loves babies and often helps new mothers in town without being asked. Besides bartending she supports herself by operating a home beauty salon. Apparently, women really do tell their hairdressers everything, because if you want to know anything about anybody in town, just ask Cheryl.

I have known Cheryl for five years, since the recession washed me out financially. Some friends in her town offered me their house while they were gone, to try to help me get back on my feet.

I didn’t have to worry about rent for a while, but essentially I was broke and homeless. I took a job as a server at a local country club, hoping to stir up some cash flow. Cheryl was bar manager. I had never worked in a restaurant or bar. Since I had eaten out a million times in my life, I figured I could fake it.

I was wrong.

My first hour I let an $80 cash tab walk out the door. The guy winked at me as he left. I smiled back, and told him to come again, thinking it was my great service. Later, I gave a burger plate to a vegetarian member, and ice-cream to someone who had ordered breakfast. Things got worse after that.

Unshed tears were burning my eyes when at the end of my shift-from-hell the manager said he needed to talk to me in his office. He wasn’t going to fire me, he said, because I worked hard and everyone seemed to like me. But I lacked a sense of “urgency” and for that he didn’t think I would make it.

Cheryl was waiting outside the door when I came out. She patted my back and promised that things would get better. They didn’t. The next day was even worse and involved a lot of broken china. I could see the manager rethinking his decision to keep me on.

But suddenly, every time I was about to make a mistake Cheryl would appear out of nowhere, at my elbow, to stop me. She took responsibility for me, to make sure I succeeded. With her help I stayed on long enough to get promoted four times and get a nice apology from the manager.

THE CANCER

Most people who interact with me personally end up using supplements for their ails. I don’t try, I swear, but it always seems to work out that way. It was no different with Cheryl. So when she called to tell me she had cancer, she had already put herself on a good regimen for defeating it, based on what I’d already told her about inflammation.

Cheryl has had a couple of biopsies, as her doctor wanted to monitor the cancer’s progress. Among other vitamins, she has been taking 100 Beta Carotene softgels each morning with breakfast. The high dose of Beta Carotene helped explain her pathologist’s comment after her most recent biopsy.

He said, “You know what? I am no longer impressed with your tumor, Cheryl.” He must have seen the look of puzzlement on her face, because he went on to say that it wasn’t a “healthy” tumor anymore. Unlike the earlier biopsies, this flesh had fallen apart, lost its structure, while he was trying to study it.

Cheryl and I attribute this tumor destabilization and loss of integrity to the Beta Carotene that she is taking. But 100 a day are not enough to defeat cancer, only slow it down. Cheryl’s dose is higher than that now.

Cheryl had cancer about 20 years ago. At that time, she used large doses of blue green algae, a potent source of anti-oxidants, to cure it. This knowledge of how well anti-oxidants worked, coupled with the pathologist’s comment now, only strengthened Cheryl’s resolve to try the natural way first. Everything else I have told her about wellness turned out to be true. So, with chin up and fingers crossed she’s going forward.

I will write regular blogs updating you with Cheryl’s progress. The next blog will contain details about her exact treatment.

Each of the entry blogs will give you bite-sized explanations about where cancer comes from. How it starts and proceeds. Why all cancers can be treated in the same way no matter where they are located. Why such huge amounts of Beta Carotene are necessary to defeat cancer once and for all. Why cancer is a numbers game. Why cancer is easier to cure and avoid than the common cold. Why the medical industry will never ever “solve” the cancer mystery.

At the end, hopefully you will have a clearer picture of the answers to these questions, and Cheryl will have a cancer free body.

Please stay tuned and let us hear from you if you have comments or questions.

THIS PAINFUL DIGESTIVE DISORDER CAN BE PREVENTED AND CONTROLLED NATURALLY. ALSO INCLUDED ARE TIPS ABOUT GOOD EATING HABITS THAT WILL PROTECT YOU FROM CROHN’S AND OTHER LIKE DISORDERS.

CATEGORIES: 6: Excess Toxicity, 2: Inflammation

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENT: Beta Carotene

THE FACTORY ANALOGY

In my wellness writing, I often compare the human body to a manufacturing plant, a factory. In this case, if the body were a factory the digestive system would function as a supplies intake station (mouth and esophagus), a processing department (stomach and small intestine), and a waste disposal system (colon).

The factory could not sustain itself if the right supplies didn’t come in the front door. It would also have to close if it were unable to break down those supplies and format them for proper use. And if they couldn’t get rid of the production waste, the plant would be overcome with filth and vermin, and again, could not function. You can see that a failure anywhere along this three-part process would mean a failure of the factory itself.

It is the same with the human body. To be successful, healthy, the right supplies have to come in through intake, be formatted for use in processing, and their wastes eliminated through disposal. Without Step: 3, proper elimination, there will be sicknesses like Crohn’s due to excess toxicity, which circumstance leads to inflammation. Like the poor factory, the body will fail.

THE FOOD TRIP

Food enters your mouth where chewing and saliva begin the digestive process. The masticated food is shunted via the esophagus to the stomach, where the real digestive work begins. Stomach acids break down the food until it is a thick liquid called chyme. (Pronounced kime, like dime.) Digestion continues in the small intestine, where the chyme is further processed and most of the nutrients extracted and absorbed.

By the time food matter gets to the end of the small intestine, there is little of value left in it except water, which is extracted as the matter moves through the colon to the anus. Constipation occurs if too much water is extracted from the colon at this point, and diarrhea if not enough is. Crohn’s can affect any part of the Gastrointestinal Tract, but most often affects the colon itself, as well as, the end of the small intestine where it connects to the colon, called the ileum.

_______________________________________________________________

Definition: Gastrointestinal Tract: The GI tract is a series of hollow organs joined together in one long, twisting tube that extends from the mouth to the anus. The movement of muscles all along the GI tract, along with the release of hormones and enzymes at appropriate times and places, allows for digestion of food.

_______________________________________________________________

The beginning of the digestive system, the mouth, while not the cleanest part of your body, is fresher than the end, the colon, where final expulsion of waste occurs. The colon has the hazardous duty of being the last stop on the trip that food takes through your body, handling it when it is no longer actually food, but bacterial-infested feces, waste for which your body has absolutely no use and must get rid of in order to remain well.

UNDERSTANDING CROHN’S DISEASE

Crohn’s belongs to a group of disorders known as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), and presents as open sores and ulcers usually in the lower GI tract. Because of its role in digestion, the soft tissue in your colon and ileum is more or less in continual contact with rotting fecal matter. Crohn’s starts with a failure to completely evacuate this matter over and over, to the point where old feces and colonizing bacteria coat the soft tissue, creating a film of dangerous wastes that never goes away.

When your body cannot timely expel feces, they are held too long and harden over time, while they sit inert inside your lower bowel. This state leads to a sustained microbial-induced inflammatory response in the colon, because the bacterial load is too high for your digestive system to handle. The end result is a toxic, bacterial-laden environment that overwhelms the body and leads to infection, free radicals, chronic inflammation, and Crohn’s.

Crohn’s is considered the most serious IBD and is associated across gender, age, and cultures with an increased intake of animal and milk proteins. Those who eat more fresh vegetables have a lower incidence, which I attribute to both the antioxidants in vegetables, as well as the additional water. This makes sense because it is harder to digest animal protein, and the process takes longer. Meat moves through you like the tortoise, vegetables like the hare. A meat dominant diet can lead to constipation due to the lack of water left in the feces as it tries to exit the colon. Vegetables hold more water during their trip through the colon and therefore can make an easier and quicker exit. The faster you can evacuate feces the lower are your chances of getting Crohn’s, or cancer in that area.

Ideally, you will evacuate often enough that at times the smell of what you ate will still be slightly detectable in your stool. If you had lasagna the night before, you should be able to smell that over the usual odor the next morning. You should move your bowels two or more times a day for good health. Even once a day is not enough, and signals mild constipation. Native tribes living on a largely raw diet will evacuate their bowels up to five times a day—not diarrhea, just normal bowel movements. You can bet they don’t get Crohn’s Disease, because their wastes move quickly through and out. If you’re only moving your bowels a couple of times a week, you’re in big trouble.

If you have Crohn’s your diet doesn’t include enough antioxidants, in food and supplement form, to destroy the free radicals causing oxidation and inflammation in the GI tract. You also don’t get enough enzyme-containing raw foods on a daily basis to ensure complete processing of food in the stomach, assimilation of nutrients in the small intestine, and final elimination of all waste from the colon. Often this is because the foods those with Crohn’s need for good health cause the most discomfort when eaten, so they shy away from them to their detriment. That’s why avoidance of Crohn’s is the best policy.

While scrounging for an explanation of what causes Crohn’s, many in the medical industry have locked on to the idea that it is an auto-immune disorder. I disagree. I’m not saying that after years of having old decayed feces buried in the colon that the immune system wouldn’t be compromised into attacking due to the high bacterial load. I’m saying that the immune system does not cause Crohn’s. It’s role is merely a reaction to the overwhelming influx of colonizing fecal bacteria into the lower GI tract.

Other doctors will tell you that the exact cause of Crohn’s remains unknown. But that’s not true either. They give you all the information you need to proceed when they define it as an inflammation, which is Category: 2 in my Seven Categories of Illness paradigm. It is also Category 6: Excess Toxicity, which is rarely mentioned in any discussion of Crohn’s, but whose role is important in understanding and treatment.

Once again, Crohn’s is actually caused by rampant chronic inflammation brought on by the continued presence of high bacterial fecal wastes rubbing against ulcer ridden soft tissue. Of course there’s going to be bacterial driven infection, free radicals and inflammation, which set the stage for Crohn’s.

_______________________________________________________________

Comparison: Bacteria versus Free Radicals: I use these terms seemingly interchangeably but there is a difference, and they both contribute to Crohn’s.   Bacteria: They are microscopic organisms, usually one-celled, that can be found everywhere, especially in feces. They can be dangerous, such as when they cause infections like anthrax and syphilis, or beneficial as when they assist in things like wine fermentation and cheese making. Bacteria are alive, consume matter, move around, expel waste, and multiply their numbers.

Think about where mouth plaque and tartar come from on your teeth. They are the little dead bodies and wastes pooped out by colonizing bacteria. Overnight bacterial growth is the reason for morning breath, which is why you should try to brush your teeth before you eat breakfast, to avoid introducing toxic mouth bacteria back into your system. Bacterial growth and infections also lead to the creation of free radicals

Free Radicals: They are single electrons separated by an injury from their “home” cells. Free radicals are created in numerous ways, including breathing second-hand smoke, getting a punch in the arm, eating a sandwich, and contracting a bacterial infection, to name a few. Each cell in your body has two electrons. As long as both electrons remain within the closed cell, it will be healthy and disease free. When a cell is damaged, each electron involved in the injury will split from the cell and immediately becomes a free radical—a single electron.

The first thing a newly created free radical does is attack and damage nearby healthy cells to create even more free radicals. In turn, those free radicals attack more healthy cells and create more free radicals. This process continues unabated without antioxidant intervention. Free radicals actually destroy tissue and bone and cause nothing but harm inside the body.

_______________________________________________________________

THE PROCESS OF INFLAMMATION

When free radical growth reaches a certain threshold, which varies with each individual, you have oxidation in tissue and bone, a form of decay and death. Think of a peach left on the counter while you were on vacation. The rot is the work of oxidation, which is simply free radical overload. Without antioxidants to stop it the decay continues to spread, with toxic dead tissue coming in contact with healthy tissue only to make it sick as well. The end result of this process is inflammation, which is a precursor to Crohn’s, cancer, and other inflammatory disorders.

_______________________________________________________________

THE PROGRESSION OF INFLAMMATION IN CROHN’S

Once bacteria attack the body and create a condition, the damage done to cells creates free radicals and the process toward inflammation begins:

Buildup of Old Feces  →  High Bacterial Load  →  Free Radicals  →  Oxidation  →  Inflammation  →  Crohn’s Disease

_______________________________________________________________

CROHN’S SYMPTOMS

There are a number of unpleasant symptoms associated with moderate to severe Crohn’s. Understanding them teaches us more about the disorder.

Persistent Diarrhea: The cells in the area secrete extra water to cool the heat from the inflammation, but if the colon can’t absorb the extra fluids this process results in diarrhea. What makes it worse is that persistent diarrhea leads to weight loss and malnutrition from loss of nutrients. Anemia is also common with Crohn’s.

Persistent Constipation: How cruel a disease that can give you both diarrhea and constipation, which is just as likely to happen with Crohn’s due to fistula, strictures, and improper digestion along the GI tract.

Fistula: Sometimes an open ulcer can get so inflamed with oxidation that it will eat all the way through an intestinal wall, creating an abnormal connection between it and other body parts, like your skin, bladder, or vagina. Think of it as an inflamed tunnel that leads to these parts. When fistula develop, food can bypass areas of the bowel completely, meaning that partially digested food, along with harsh digestive acids, bacteria, and free radicals, are leaking directly into the abdomen, further spreading inflammation.

Stricture: Inflamed and ulcerated sores sometimes heal and leave scar tissue behind. Inflammation will flare again, heal over again, and leave more scar tissue. Over time this scar tissue narrows the digestive channels, making it difficult for food matter to move through them, and equally difficult to move your bowels. These narrowed passageways are called strictures. They cause a lot of pain and can also cause an actual bowel obstruction, necessitating surgery to clear out the wastes. They have to go up there and dig it out.

Blood In The Stool: Even though you may have open sores in your GI tract, you still have to utilize those areas one or more times a day. Say you go to a summer barbeque, down some grilled salmon, a couple skewers of Cajun shrimp, and two hotdogs. During digestion, that food rubs against the inflamed open sores in the GI Tract. This painful contact causes the ulcers to bleed and the blood shows up in your stool.

Fissure: Inflammation sometimes results in an actual tear in the anus. It is very painful, especially during bowel movements, as the feces grates across the ulcerated cleft, feeling like salt on an open cut. It can lead to rectal bleeding from the tear itself, and from the strain to evacuate.

Increased Risk of Cancer In The Lower GI Tract: It has already been established that Crohn’s is a chronic inflammation, usually occurring in the colon and the ileum. With ulcerated sores continually coming into contact with toxic fecal matter, free radical growth and inflammation become exponential. All inflammation is caused by free radicals, and inflammation is the last step before disorders like Crohn’s or cancer begin. Therefore, if you have Crohn’s you have a highly increased chance of getting colon cancer. If you have a really serious case, that outcome would seem to be inevitable if other steps are not taken. Actress Farrah Fawcett died at 62, after battling three years against anal cancer that began as a fissure.

Urgent Need To Use Bathroom: This irritating symptom gives you the sensation of suddenly having to move your bowels, accompanied by a regular sensation of incomplete evacuation, meaning chronic discomfort.

Other Health Problems: Due to long term malnutrition, Crohn’s sufferers experience myriad other profoundly serious health problems, such as arthritis, eye and skin inflammations, clubbing of the fingertips, kidney stones, chronic low grade fever, fatigue, and stunted growth and physical development in children. Crohn’s can also lead to loss of normal menstrual cycle. Remember, your body was created from nutrition, and it can only grow and function properly with replacement of those same nutrients as they are lost. Crohn’s makes it difficult to take in and assimilate the nutrition you need for good health.

FIGHTING BACK WITH NUTRITION

The best approach to Crohn’s is to prevent it in the first place. If you clean out the fecal wastes regularly you will stop inflammation from developing. All the symptoms associated with Crohn’s have inflammation as the core problem. Inflammation based on excess toxicity. Because you can’t get enough antioxidants in your food to be free of disorders like Crohn’s, you need the additional nutritional protection of antioxidants in supplement form. Specifically, Beta Carotene and D3 will heal the open sores, while the other supplements will keep you regular and your colon cleaned out.

Beta Carotene is the best Antioxidant to stop bacterial overload that leads to free radicals, and therefore oxidation and inflammation. (See Blog 3: The Dangers of Inflammation to learn more.) If you do not get relief with the recommended minimum of 25 softgels (25,000 IU strength) taken twice daily, feel free to increase the dosage to the level necessary to control the disorder. This is only nutrition and will not hurt you. Let me say that again: Beta Carotene will not hurt you. It is perhaps the kindest gift the universe has ever given mammals.

Whatever dosage works to control your inflammation is your specific daily maintenance dose of Beta Carotene, no matter how high it is. On most days I take from 100 to 200 softgels depending on my inflammation load, because that’s what it takes to be pain free. I will not accept less than zero tolerance when it comes to pain and sickness, so I don’t care how many softgels it takes as long as it works. I get enough mail to know that I should add here that 100 to 200 softgels is not a typo, and no I don’t mean milligrams or IUs. I mean softgels.

My usual maintenance dose of Beta Carotene is 100 softgels daily—50 with breakfast, and 50 with dinner. I do this and then thumb my nose at cancer, which no longer scares me. There is no chance I can get cancer while taking these high daily doses, because I’m controlling free radical growth that leads to inflammation and cancer. That also applies to the hundreds of other inflammation disorders. So, don’t worry about the number of softgels, worry about the results.

Vitamin D3 is a support vitamin for Beta Carotene. Never take Beta Carotene without also taking Vitamin D or the result will be a Vitamin D deficiency. Beta Carotene uses up Vitamin D during processing and assimilation.

Lecithin is an emulsifier and will help keep your digestive system running smoothly. It will emulsify old, hardened feces that are stuck to your soft tissue, and clean out your colon. It will prevent the buildup of new feces, making it easier to move your bowels regularly.

Calcium/Magnesium will increase the frequency of your bowel movements and soften the consistency of the feces, ensuring that you evacuate all wastes within 12 hours, or less, of having eaten. It stands to reason that there is less bacteria in feces that is only a couple of hours old, as opposed to feces that is a couple of years old. Quickly eliminating feces is vital to preventing and treating Crohn’s.

Aloe Vera Gel will sooth open raw sores in your burning digestive system. Many people keep an Aloe plant in the kitchen in case they burn themselves, because of its known healing properties. Anyone with sunburn will attest to this as well. Aloe will do the same thing inside your GI tract that it does on the outside of your body, sooth burning inflammation. If you take Aloe Vera orally on a regular basis you will notice that your bowel movements do not smell as bad.

ANTIOXIDANT FOOD SOURCES

It’s important to eat a diet high in antioxidant foods. But make no mistake. Even if you eat these foods 24/7, you cannot get enough antioxidants through food alone to protect yourself from serious inflammation that can lead to Crohn’s and cancer. You must add antioxidant supplements to be completely safe.

l

Almost any vegetable or fruit with deep coloring is going to contain antioxidants. In most cases, the deeper the color, the higher the antioxidant levels. Eating more of these fresh foods will increase your daily intake of antioxidants and fight infection and inflammation. Fresh is preferred, frozen is tolerated, and canned is prohibited, unless that is all you have access to.

Here is a short list of foods, but they are not in any particular order after Acai berry, which is the number one food for antioxidants.

_______________________________________________________________

GOOD SOURCES FOR ANTIOXIDANTS

Acai berry (usually consumed as juice) • Small red beans • Blueberries (wild are better) • Spinach • Red kidney beans • Cooked collards • Pumpkin • Pinto beans • Cranberries • Carrots • Mangos • Artichokes hearts •  Kale • Parsley • Blackberries • Papaya • Broccoli • Prunes • Raspberries • Strawberries • Red Delicious apples • Cooked mustard greens • Granny Smith apples • Sweet (black) cherries • Black plums • Brussels sprouts • Black beans • Red Plums • Gala Apples. There are other vegetables, fruits, and legumes that contain antioxidants but are not mentioned here, so don’t be afraid to experiment. And don’t forget the benefits of freshly juiced vegetables and fruits in keeping you healthy. A juicer is a great investment in good health.

_______________________________________________________________

You’ll notice that beans are listed as good sources of antioxidants. You get more taste and better texture when you cook dried beans from scratch. Dried beans are also more nutritious and less expensive than canned beans. They are easy to prepare, and don’t have to be soaked overnight. You just have to simmer them longer if they haven’t been soaked.

________________________________________________________________

 GENERIC RECIPE FOR COOKING BEANS

Rinse a cup full of beans and throw them in a saucepot with about 3 cups of water. (You will need to add more water during cooking time.) • Add spices to taste (sea salt, black pepper, chopped garlic clove or garlic powder, and a dash or two of ground Cayenne red pepper—if you like the heat). • Also add a small chopped onion, carrot, and fresh tomato. These vegetables are meant to flavor the beans and will disappear into the mixture by the time they are cooked. • Stir from time to time and add water as needed. • Keep the top of the pot ajar during entire cooking time to permit the indigestible sugars to cook off, and avoid intestinal gas. • Cook the beans until tender and a thin sauce has formed. • Overtime you will see how easy it is to work with dried beans, and will create your own herbal combinations to flavor them.

_______________________________________________________________

PROTECTING YOURSELF FROM CROHN’S

One way to protect yourself from Crohn’s, besides getting more antioxidants in your diet, is to follow this simple rule: Never eat anything cooked without having something fresh/raw at the same time. This will help ensure complete evacuations. My solution is to eat fresh fruit with breakfast. This translates usually as a combination of banana, pear, berries, or cantaloupe blended with 1% milk into a thick shake. When I want eggs and toast, cereal, pancakes or waffles, I’ll simply have a small fruit garnish on the side. If I’m eating lunch, I’ll have a small side salad—sometimes this translates simply as the fresh lettuce on a tuna sandwich, but I’m still following the rule. I have a green salad every night with dinner. Sometimes a big salad with my favorite cheese is all I eat for dinner. I choose from the following fresh produce and other items to create my salads:

_______________________________________________________________

FRESH SALAD FIXINS’

Romaine hearts • Arugula leaves • Chicory • Frisee • Red or white cabbage European mix • Spring mix • Bib lettuce • Spinach • Endive • Escarole • Celery • Tomatoes • Cilantro • Red onion • Persian cucumber • Raisins • Scallions • Parsley • Sprouts • Cranberries • Cauliflower florets • Carrots • Mushrooms • Radishes • Green, red, or yellow peppers • Apples • Grapes. I also sometimes add cottage, cheddar, Swiss or fontina cheese. Other times I opt to choose from toasted sunflower seeds, hard boiled eggs, chunks of tuna, chicken strips, or tahini paste. Sometimes I eat it plain, vegetables only, with my favorite store bought dressing, Annie’s Shitake Sesame. You may add any other of your own favorite fresh salad items.

_______________________________________________________________

I also enjoy crunchy iceberg lettuce as a wedge salad and as an ingredient with other lettuces. If I’m not eating a wedge, I add chopped iceberg directly to my salad at the last minute, because it oxides quickly, ahead of the other ingredients. If I keep the iceberg separate, a large bowl of salad will last three days in the refrigerator without browning, especially if it contains cabbage. Salads with cabbage seem to last longer.

HOMEMADE SALAD DRESSING

It’s a good idea to sometimes make your own salad dressing. I know there are a lot of good commercial dressings available, but the purest experience is to simply mix red wine or rice vinegar with extra virgin olive oil (yes, it should be extra virgin), in a 5 to 1 ratio. Five parts oil to one part vinegar. Add your favorite seasonings like sea salt, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, oregano, basil, dill, etc. For enhanced flavor add several raw onion rings to soak in the dressing. Onion adds a nice flavor, and they get “pickled” over time, making them delicious additions to sandwiches and meats.

WHY YOU SHOULD USE EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL

Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which contains 75 percent of its fat in the form of oleic acid, a monounsaturated, omega-9 fatty acid, has many health benefits, especially for the cardiovascular system. One reason that Extra Virgin is better than Virgin Olive Oil or Olive Oil is the way that the oil is extracted from the olives for each of them.

When making Extra Virgin Olive Oil, the gorgeous unripe olives, fresh from the trees, are run through a mechanical press only, resulting in that lovely greenish hued liquid. Because Extra Virgin Olive Oil is oil from the first pressing it contains the most nutrients and has the delightful taste of fresh olives. No heat or chemicals are permitted in the pressing or it can’t be called Extra Virgin. It couldn’t be more natural.

The same smashed olive mash left from the first pressing is run through the press a second time and called Virgin Olive Oil. Heat and/or chemicals are used to extract more oil because it is faster and cheaper to do it that way. Virgin is not as smooth tasting as Extra Virgin. Again, this same mash left from the first two pressings is pressed a third time, and called simply Olive Oil. They use heat and/or chemicals to extract the oil, which can taste bitter, and it has less flavor compared with Extra Virgin and Virgin.

Keep in mind that the mash left from the first and second pressings, what is destined to become Virgin Olive Oil, and Olive Oil, will have a large number of free radicals in it due to the damage done to the olives in the first and second pressing. Free radicals not found in Extra Virgin.

EVOO, as Rachael Ray likes to call it, can get very pricey in most supermarkets. Trader Joe’s sells large, 33.8 fluid ounce bottles for $6.99 to $8.99, a real bargain for a quality product.

STOP THIS ANNOYING PROBLEM IN JUST DAYS

CATEGORY: 2: Inflammation
RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENT: Beta Carotene

Raynaud’s is one of the most annoying problems, but also one of the easiest to fix. There is a distinction made between Primary Raynaud’s, referred to as the Disease, and Secondary Raynaud’s, referred to as the Syndrome. Both manifest as numbness in the shoulders, arms, hands, fingers, legs, feet and toes. Luckily, this therapy works equally well on both.

Primary Raynaud’s (the Disease) is diagnosed if the symptoms have no other known cause and occur by themselves, with no association with any other disorder or condition.

Secondary Raynaud’s (the Syndrome) is diagnosed in conjunction with and secondary to a wide variety of other conditions, including, connective tissue disorders, eating disorders, obstructive disorders, ingesting certain drugs, and occupations that lead to extensive exposure to cold weather or cold conditions. Raynaud’s is often described as an allergy to cold, because cold conditions are one of the classic inflammatory triggers that leads to the problem.

A closer look shows that these other conditions associated with secondary Raynaud’s are all, directly or indirectly, connected to and caused by a flare-up of inflammation, just like Raynaud’s. Therefore, if you can control inflammation you can control both Primary and Secondary Raynaud’s, no matter the cause.
________________________________________________________________________
Note: Inflammation can flare up anywhere in your body, at any time, and for a million different reasons. How it will manifest is a function of your personal genetics. Maybe your family has a genetic weakness in the nervous system, so your inflammation may show up as Multiple Sclerosis. Maybe the genetic weakness is in the digestive system, in which case your inflammation may show up as Crohn’s Disease. Maybe it’s a predisposition to tumor growth that turns your inflammation into cancer. But inflammation is inflammation: All and any inflammation has the same root cause, oxidation and an excess of free radicals. Hence, no matter where it manifests, any case of inflammation can be treated with the same therapy with equal success.

WHAT DOES RAYNAUD’S FEEL LIKE?

You wake up in the middle of the night with the phone ringing loudly in your ear. Your reach for it, only to discover that your right arm is completely numb, with no feeling whatsoever. Since the numbness extends into your hands and fingers, you can’t pick up the phone. Or you go out to shovel snow from your walk. When you finish and reenter your kitchen, your fingers are completely numb with no feeling. You even have trouble unzipping your parka. Or, maybe every time you sit down for a spell, one or both of your legs fall asleep, making it hard to stand again and move around. This is Raynaud’s, and it is one of the easiest disorders to control and prevent.

WHAT IS RAYNAUD’S?

Think of Raynaud’s as “over-crowding,” like thirty-six people sharing a studio apartment, constantly getting in each other’s way, constantly invading each other’s space.

All of your blood vessels are surrounded by soft tissue. When that soft tissue becomes inflamed it takes on water, swells up and expands. As it expands it takes up more room and presses against the blood vessels, leaving less space for blood flow to get through to your extremities. The decreased blood flow to the extremities causes the numbness and the condition we call Raynaud’s. That’s all there is to it. It’s easy to see therefore, that stopping inflammation will stop the tissue from swelling, and will stop Raynaud’s from stealing space belonging to the blood vessels and thereby cutting off the blood supply to the extremities.
________________________________________________________________________
Note: When exposed to cold temperatures, the blood supply to the face, nose and earlobes can also be markedly reduced because of the same inflammation described above. When the oxygen supply in the area is depleted, numbness occurs due to lack of blood, and the skin turns bluish.
________________________________________________________________________

Chronic recurrent attacks of Raynaud’s can result in atrophy of the skin, subcutaneous tissues, and muscle, stemming from the prolonged periods without enough oxygen. In severe cases, if left untreated, Raynaud’s can progress to necrosis or gangrene of the fingertips or toes, because extended constriction of blood flow to any area leads to tissue hypoxia.

It is said that Raynaud’s can herald certain diseases by periods of more than 20 years in some cases, making if effectively their first presenting symptom. That’s because it is inflammation that is causing the Raynaud’s, as well as the other diseases. Left untreated inflammation worsens and leads to other conditions, like cancer, Crohn’s, or MS.

RAYNAUD’S INFLAMMATORY CHAIN REACTION

When inflammation flares up in your system it has a set process and reaction sequence. In the case of Raynaud’s, the inflammatory trigger causes reddening and warmth in the tissue surrounding the blood vessels. The body then attempts to cool the heat by shunting extra fluids to the tissue. The tissue absorbs the extra fluid and swells. The swollen tissue squeezes against the blood vessel walls, nanrrowing them, and decreasing blood flow to the limbs. Decreased blood flow means decreased oxygen, and results in numbness and temporary loss of usage in the affected extremities.
_____________________________________________________________________
Raynaud’s Inflammatory Chain Reaction
environmental trigger → inflammation → reddening and warmth → extra fluids → swelling → squeezing of blood vessel walls → narrowing of blood vessels → numbness in extremities _____________________________________________________________________

BETA CAROTENE IS THE VERY BEST INFLAMMATION FIGHTER

Large doses of Beta Carotene—a superior antioxidant, supported by Vitamin D3 and taken on a regular basis—will prevent and heal Raynaud’s. Beta Carotene stops inflammation from being triggered, and will keep the tissue around the blood vessel from swelling and constricting blood flow to your extremities, leading to tissue hypoxia. It does this by severely restricting free radical growth. (See Blog 3: The Danger of Inflammation)

Ginkgo Biloba is recommended because it thins the blood, permitting more to get to the affected area even after blood vessel constriction. While you are using Beta Carotene and Vitamin D3 to control Raynaud’s, you may also want to take Ginkgo Biloba to thin the blood and help more blood and oxygen get to the extremities right away. Once you no longer suffer from Raynaud’s, you can stop taking Ginkgo Biloba, but you should continue taking Beta Carotene and Vitamin D3. If you are already taking a prescription drug blood thinner, like Coumadin, don’t take it with Ginko Biloba, because the supplement will duplicate the effects of the drug.
__________________________________________________________________________
Note: Smoking tobacco worsens the frequency and intensity of Raynaud’s attacks, because tobacco smoke is known to constrict blood vessels all on its own.

► If you take Beta Carotene without also taking Vitamin D, you will deplete your stores of Vitamin D and develop a Vitamin D deficiency. It may manifest as sores on the inside of the mouth. Always take Vitamin D when you take Beta Carotene. Vitamin D3 is recommended, because it more closely replicates the Vitamin D made naturally on your skin from contact with the sun. If you can’t find D3, take straight Vitamin D.

BREATHE EASY IN LESS THAN TWO WEEKS

CATEGORIES: 2: Inflammation, 3: Blockage

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENTS: Beta Carotene, Lecithin, L-Cysteine,

My father, Raleigh, was career Army. He loved it. Loved the order and organization. The discipline and polish. The precision and pomp. He considered it a true meritocracy, and believed there was no more level playing field for a man of color then, than in the U.S. Army. Thankfully, he never tried to impose his love of order and discipline on me. He didn’t bring home the soldier, only the dad.

But whatever made Raleigh a good warrior also fed a bit of an obsession with my safety and well being. His only child, and him a single parent. Thus it was his habit to try to incorporate defense information into our everyday activities. But it never came across like a “lesson.” He was smart and always teaching me new things. The defense part seemed all of a piece with the other information.

More often than not he made it a game, like “Front Door Intruder,” where he would knock on the screen door and pretend to be an intruder. I would open the front door, spot the malice in his face. He would pull the screen and come at me. The game was to see if I could turn and make it up the stairs to my bedroom and lock the door before he could catch me. Of course he taught me not to open the door in the first place; this was just his backup plan in case I forgot.

If we were watching a show on television and a woman was on her way into a trap, he would turn to me and want to know what was wrong with the picture. What mistake was she making? What should she do? When the victim was a man, my father would identify himself with that person and ask how I would go about rescuing him. If I gave a wrong answer I might hear something like, “No, no, first you have to create a diversion.” Then we would run through my options for creating a diversion.

Among other things, Raleigh signed me up at the Police Athletic League for rifle lessons, taught me himself how to use a hand gun, and the correct way to hold a knife as a weapon. He showed me the best escape routes out of the house from every single room, how to get to the police station through a series of backyards, and that a well placed kick to the shin would slow an attacker as quickly as one to the groin. If you’re wearing shoes.

He also schooled me on basic survival techniques. Sundays, when the family was lazing around the house reading the newspapers and funny pages, and laboring over the New York Times crossword puzzle, he would suddenly pull out The Army Survival Manual (ASM) for a bit of light reading and discussion. Groans might be heard from another room but I usually cooperated, and he usually reciprocated with ice cream, sometimes homemade by him.

The ASM makes for absorbing reading. It tells a soldier how to survive in a battle situation when she is separated from her unit. How to think, psychologically, and what to do. But there are survival tips that serve civilians just as well: What if your car breaks down in the desert? What if your small boat washes out to sea while you’re napping? What if your snow mobile runs out of gas on an Alaskan ice ledge? What if you get separated from your camping party and lost in the woods?

The ASM instructs that if you are stranded in a survival situation, there are fundamental steps to be taken if you want to make it out alive. And the steps should be taken in specific order if possible. If you are injured, first aid takes priority. Second is to find water, because we can only live a few days without it; third is build or find shelter for protection from the elements, whether rain, snow, wind, sea, or sun; fourth is find food; and fifth is find a way to signal rescuers who will be looking for you, or, make plans to travel from the site on your own.

Notice that none of the steps tells you to find an air source. We expect air to always be there. We can live without it only minutes at best. So no one cautions searching for an air source. But what if you couldn’t depend on getting enough air, and had no real control over the situation? What if once you got air in, got your lungs all filled up, you couldn’t get the air back out? In a very literal sense, asthma steals your breath away.

ASTHMA AND INFLAMMATION

Asthma is a chronic inflammation in your lungs, which triggers certain responses from your body that together form what we call an asthma attack.

Let’s say you’re on vacation with three friends, renting a seaside cottage on the Maine coast. It’s a hot July day and the bees are out busily pollinating flowers. You have a cigarette on the porch with a cup of Earl Grey. Watching the waves entices you to take a swim in the Atlantic, where you push yourself beyond your normal limits. As you leave the water you feel a tightness forming in your chest. Your heart speeds slightly in anticipation of an imminent asthma episode. By the time you get back to your room, you’re coughing and having trouble breathing.

An asthma attack starts with inflammation. That’s what asthma medicines like inhaled and swallowed corticosteroids try to achieve, the control of inflammation. You can have inflammation anywhere in your body, but in the lungs is possibly the worst place to have it. If you suffer from asthma, you walk around with a chronic, low grade inflammation in your lungs all the time, making them overly sensitive and therefore susceptible to certain triggers.

When those triggers are activated as they were in the opening hypothetical, by pollen dust, cigarette smoke, hard exercise, and fatigue, that low grade inflammation flares inside your lungs into a full blown one. When inflammation reaches a base point threshold in your lungs, it triggers an asthma attack.

We’re all familiar with the symptoms of inflammation. If you bang your wrist on a fence, the affected area will redden and warm due to increased blood flow as your body reacts to the damage; it will swell as the body dispatches fluids, trying to cool the heat it just produced; it will be painful from a chemical released in reaction to the damage that over stimulates nerve endings; and there will be a loss of function, because of all the other reasons.

When that process happens on a wrist it’s an annoyance but you get on with your day. If it happens inside your lungs, it’s a catastrophe, and you could suffocate. Let’s walk through an asthma attack, step by horrible step:

SIX STEPS TO AN ASTHMA EPISODE

Step 1: your specific trigger causes inflammation to explode inside your sensitive lungs;

Step 2: your body acts to protect the area by expanding capillaries, which increases blood flow to the lungs, and causes reddening and warmth;

Step 3: the reddening and warmth signal your body to send extra fluids to your lungs, attempting to cool the heat it just produced there;

Step 4: the extra fluids are absorbed by the lung tissue and result in swelling and the production of excess mucus;

Step 5: as lung tissue swells and the lungs fill with mucus, airways constrict (narrow); this lethal combination of swelling, mucus, and airway narrowing reduces the space in the lungs, until there isn’t enough left for air to move in and out. (You try to take a breath but there’s no place for the air to enter into.)

Step 6: the narrowed airways cause chest tightening, and pressure in the chest as your muscles work harder and harder for every breath; it can get so bad that no air can circulate in and out, and you lose function in the lungs.

There is pain and discomfort throughout this entire frightening process.

ASTHMA’S CHAIN REACTION

environmental trigger inflammation reddening and warmth fluids swelling mucus narrowed airways trouble breathing loss of lung function → with pain and discomfort throughout the entire process

ATTACKING ASTHMA

As you can see from the steps above, if you can stop inflammation from flaring, you can stop the chain reaction that leads to an asthma attack. All of the symptoms associated with asthma have inflammation as the core problem. Because of the chain reaction asthma causes in the lungs, it takes several supplements to control and prevent it naturally.

There is no better inflammation fighter than Beta Carotene, along with its support partner, Vitamin D3. (Please see Blog 3: The Dangers of Inflammation for more information.) You are given the option of taking from 15 to 25 softgels twice daily. If you start with 15 and do not get the results as described here, simply increase your dosage and keep increasing it until the asthma is under control, even if it means taking more than 25 softgels twice daily. This is only nutrition and will not hurt you. Let me say that again. Beta Carotene will not hurt you. It is perhaps the kindest gift the universe has ever given us. Whatever dosage works to control your inflammation is your specific daily maintenance dose of Beta Carotene.

Lecithin will keep lungs clear of the mucus produced by your body as it tries to heal the usually low grade, but never ending, inflammation in your lungs.

L-Cysteine, along with its support partner, Vitamin C Complex, has an incredible ability to heal and cleanse the lungs fast and efficiently.

You can avoid the side effects of asthma medicines with these food supplements that actually heal the condition without causing harm. Taken together, they are all that you need to control and prevent asthma. You should plan on taking the extra nutrition in these supplements daily, as a maintenance dose, to make sure you keep asthma completely in check. Otherwise it will return if you stop.

NOTES

► If you take Beta Carotene without also taking Vitamin D, you will deplete your stores of Vitamin D and develop a Vitamin D deficiency. It may manifest as sores on the inside of the mouth. Always take Vitamin D when you take Beta Carotene. Vitamin D3 is recommended because it more closely replicates the Vitamin D made naturally on your skin from contact with the sun. If you can’t find D3, take straight Vitamin D.

Lecithin is the best natural emulsifier available, and will safely breakup and remove congestion from your lungs and sinus. I have recommended Puritan’s Pride brand because theirs is from soybeans only, and contains a minimum of 732 mg of phosphatides in each 1200 mg softgel, equivalent to 61 percent phosphatides. The value of a Lecithin product is determined by the percentage of phosphatides, because they activate the emulsifying process in your body. You may use another brand but make sure it conforms to or exceeds these specifications or it will not work as I described.

► When you use Lecithin regularly, in the beginning you will notice that you are coughing up and blowing out of your nose, a lot more mucus than usual. And it may appear thicker, nastier, and more opaque than usual. This is happening because Lecithin is breaking up congestion blockages in your lungs and other areas, causing mucus and other wastes to be expelled. This is a good sign and will taper off as your body cleans itself.

► Lecithin Granules are best used in blender drinks and sprinkled on salads, fresh cut fruit, and cereals. Make sure to consume it uncooked, in its natural state. You can use it in cooked recipes for texture and smoothness, but those amounts do not count toward your daily maintenance dose. It’s completely safe so take as much as you want.

► When you open a bottle of L-Cysteine you will notice a strong odor. It’s supposed to smell like that. It’s the sulphur. If you have a sulphur allergy do not use L-Cysteine.

► In order for L-Cysteine to work effectively it must be taken with twice its weight in Vitamin C. So, if you were to take 1000 mg of L-Cysteine, you would need 2000 mg of Vitamin C in order to get the L-Cysteine to work properly. This therapy will not work as I have described if you take L-Cysteine alone, or without enough Vitamin C.

END PAIN AND POSTPONE OR AVOID SURGERY WITH THIS NUTRITION THERAPY

CATEGORY: 1: Simple Malnutrition

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENTS: Glucosamine, Monavie Active, Beta Carotene,  and Lecithin

As an infant you are born with 300 to 350 bones. As you grow, some of them fuse together, thereby decreasing the overall number until it drops to 206 in adulthood. There isn’t strict agreement on the number of joints in a human body. The answers range from no one knows to a couple hundred. We can agree that you need a lot of joints to hold together 206 bones.

Definitions: A Joint is the spot where two or more of your 206 individual bones are joined in such a manner as to permit flexibility and movement of the musculoskeletal structure. Joints are held in place by Ligaments, tough elastic tissue that connects bones and cartilage to the joint. (Tendons connect muscle to bone.)

Osteoarthritis (OA) assaults your joints and cartilage, and affects more people than rheumatoid arthritis, the “other” arthritis, which is an auto immune disorder. OA is the number one cause of chronic disability in the United States, and accounts for one in four visits to a primary physician. Meaning, that if we could get control of this disease, we could greatly reduce chronic disability, and eliminate the costs associated with 25 percent of primary care visits.

It is believed that some people have a genetic propensity that causes them to contract OA. Even so, you can always trump genetics with nutrition. Always. It’s not the family genes that are at fault, but the family diet that is passed on to succeeding generations.

OA is also known as degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease, simply because as the disease progresses the joints actually degrade, erode, and slowly disappear in places. The polite term is “narrowing.” OA symptoms include acute pain, chronic stiffness, fiery burning sensation, swelling from water retention, bone spurs, crackling sounds (crepitus) when joint is used, and enlargement and misshaping of the joint. Naturally, any combination of these can lead to a loss of mobility. There are lucky people who do not have symptoms, despite x-ray evidence of OA.

Definition: Bone Spur: It is caused by the same inflammation that causes swelling from water retention, and most of the pain and burning. This inflammation stimulates the overgrowth of bone cells, causing them to deposit too much bone in the area of the arthritis. The extra bone accumulates until there is a noticeable bony outgrowth called a spur. Bone spurs are one reason for the enlargement and misshaping of an arthritic joint, and are directly related to inflammation.

PREVENTING CARTILAGE DEGRADATION AND LOSS IS THE FOCUS FOR TREATING OSTEOARTHRITIS

OA is not a complicated disease despite its debilitating affect on your body. It can be successfully treated with nutrition that targets the resultant symptoms, and also the trigger itself, which is wear and tear. OA results directly from the loss of cartilage, the spongy protein substance that “cushions” the joints and keeps the bones from bumping into each other as you move.

Humans are always seeking “cushions” in life. We want the cushy job. We are told it is wise to have a financial cushion in case of hard times.  Chairs are padded with cushions for our butt’s comfort. Your car’s bumper cushions it from other, inept drivers. Take that natural desire for cushion to a biological level. Each bone has the same need. It needs a cushion to keep the other, inept bones away from it.

A large part of the cartilage cushion is dependent upon water content and other joint components like Glucosamine. If you don’t give your body the building nutrients it needs to repair cartilage, it will dry out over time and become less resilient. As the cartilage dries it provides less and less of a cushion for the adjoining bones. If the cartilage dries out completely, the cushion is lost and the bones collide with drastic results.

A great loss of flexibility and mobility occurs when the cushion collapses and bones start grinding against each other. Movement becomes painful and sometimes impossible. With a loss of cartilage, joints can actually lock in place. The stress on the joint from the disintegration of cartilage causes inflammation. Once inflammation is present the other symptoms show up as well.

ALL JOINTS ARE AT RISK FOR OSTEOARTHRITIS

OA can affect any joint but it usually presents in hands, feet, hips, knees, spine and lower back. The medical industry tells you that osteoarthritis is simply a natural result of aging. That you should go ahead and expect your joints to wear out before you’re done using them. Joint replacement surgery has become routine.

This medical information is confirmed by your own observations. When you look around you see most people over 45 with some symptom of OA. They complain that certain joints have become tender and achy. Or that they’re beginning to experience stiffness. Maybe a little swelling now and then? That’s the beginning of OA. But today you also hear 23-year-olds complaining about OA, while some 90-somethings show no signs of the disease. OA is no longer a disorder associated strictly with aging. Now it’s a disorder also associated with a profound lack of nutrition, regardless of your age.

The truth is that evolution designed your joints to operate efficiently for over 100 years, if supplied along the way with the nutritional building materials they need to make repairs and maintain their integrity. But after decades of use without enough nutrition, sure, they’re going to fail prematurely. They’re going to wear out.

Think of a favorite pair of shoes that you wear every day for months. They’re comfortable and you love them because they make you look cool. After a while the heels and soles show signs of wear and tear. Your first impulse, since these are your favorites, is to take them to a repair shop before they fall apart and you can’t wear them anymore.

Same thing with your joints. If you expect to get extended use out of them, you have to take steps to ensure they can fulfill the 100 year warranty. Your joints are in use more or less constantly. Even when you’re asleep, you can’t turn over in bed, scratch your ear, or reach for the annoying alarm without using many of your joints. Everything you do, your mobility itself, depends on actions by your joints. Without healthy joints you would become an immobile stick creature like Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz, before Dorothy saved him with the oil can. If you supplement your diet with specific nutrients, your joints will have the building materials they need to make repairs and maintain stability.

THE SUPPLEMENTS

Glucosamine Sulfate or Glucosamine Hydrochloride (HCL) both do a good job of repairing and forming new cartilage inside joints. Glucosamine is a component of joint tissue and important to the production of synovial fluid, which keeps the joint lubricated. Your body produces Glucosamine, but the levels fall as you age and fail to add it as a supplement to your diet.

There is disagreement on which Glucosamine works better, the sulfate or the hydrochloride form. You’ll have to experiment to see which works best for you. For a long time I used sulfate and it worked fine, but then I noticed that taking it caused irritation in some joints, especially the knee. When I switched to hydrochloride the results improved. I can promise you that Glucosamine will rebuild the cartilage cushion in your joints, but your individual factors will decide which is best for you. Don’t lose heart if you try one form and it doesn’t work for you. Simply switch to the other to get relief.

While Glucosamine is the accepted supplement for rebuilding cartilage and preventing future loss of it, Monavie Active, which has a potent Hydrochloride form of Glucosamine, is very effective and highly recommended.

Lecithin is an emulsifier. It smoothes out the cartilage being constructed by the other supplements, and keeps the joint clear of organic debris that is the cause of a lot of the pain experienced by those who have OA. Like Dorothy’s oil can, Lecithin helps keep the joints lubricated and mobile.

Beta Carotene reduces free radical activity and thereby calms inflammation. It also reduces pain, burning, swelling, and misshaping of the joint through bone spurs.

Vitamin D3 supports Beta Carotene in its inflammation fighting function. If you take Beta Carotene without Vitamin D, you will deplete your stores of Vitamin D and develop a Vitamin D deficiency. That’s why you should always take Vitamin D when taking Beta Carotene. Vitamin D3 is recommended because it more closely replicates the Vitamin D made naturally on your skin from contact with the sun. If you can’t find D3, take straight Vitamin D.

Ibuprophen eliminates 90 percent of the stiffness accompanying OA. The pain, burning, and swelling will end if you take the supplements discussed above. But if stiffness is still a problem, regular daily use of Ibuprophen makes a huge improvement. You’ll stop feeling like you’re already 100.

IF YOUR KNEE JOINTS ARE THE PROBLEM IT’S IMPORTANT TO EXERCISE THE MUSCLES THAT SUPPORT THE JOINT

Make no mistake, if you’re aiming for zero tolerance you have to take all of the supplements recommended above. But if you follow the instructions and find that you still have discomfort, weak muscles might be the problem. You need strong muscles surrounding the knee to hug the joint and hold it in place. If the muscles are weak they permit too much movement in the joint which leads to an instability. Your knee stability will improve shortly after doing the following exercises.

The focus here is on the muscles on either side of the joint. It’s a good idea to do these exercises at least three times a week on a regular basis. The directions begin each exercise with the left leg, but you can switch it up if you want to.

The directions also instruct you to switch back and forth from the left leg to the right leg. If you prefer you can do all the exercises for one leg before moving on to the other leg.

OUTER KNEE MUSCLES

STARTING POSITION: Begin all three exercises lying on your right side, supporting your head with your right hand and bent elbow, with your body bent at the hip so that you are in the shape of an “L.”

EXERCISE 1.     Keeping both legs straight and your left foot flat and parallel to the floor, lift your left leg about eight inches and drop it back down gently. Do 25 reps. Up and down. Change sides and repeat for right leg.

EXERCISE 2.     Keeping both legs straight, lift your left leg a few inches and point your toes. Keeping both knees in alignment, one above the other, bend your left leg and swing it back gently, until it makes a 90 degree angle with your upper thigh, and straighten it again. Do 25 reps. Back and forth. Change sides and repeat for right leg.

EXERCISE 3.     Keeping both legs straight, and your foot flat, bring your left knee toward your chest as far as you can, and return it to a straight position. Do 25 reps. Up and back. Change sides and repeat for right leg.

INNER KNEE MUSCLES

STARTING POSITION: Begin all three exercises sitting on the floor with your legs spread in front of you in a V-shape. Bend your right knee and place your right foot flat on the floor. Lean to the left and rest your weight on your bent elbow with your left hand against the floor. Rest your right arm on your bent leg.

EXERCISE 1.     Your left leg is still where it was originally in the V-shape. Turn your left leg so that the inner leg is facing up. Keeping your foot flat and the inner side facing the ceiling, begin to bob your leg up and down about four inches. Do 25 reps. Up and down. Change sides and repeat for right leg.

EXERCISE 2.     Your left leg is still where it was originally in the V-shape. Turn your left leg so that the inside is facing up. Keeping your left foot flat and the inner side facing the ceiling, bend your left knee, bringing your heel close to your body. Push out and down gently, leading with your left heel. Do 25 reps. In and out. Change sides and repeat for right leg.

EXERCISE 3.     This exercise is almost identical to the one above. Your left leg is still where it was originally in the V-shape. Keeping your left foot flat and the inner side facing the ceiling, bend your left knee, bringing your heel close to your body. But this time kick out and away, while leading with your pointed toes. Do 25 reps. In and out. Change sides and repeat for right leg.

CUT YOUR HEALING TIME IN HALF OR BETTER FOR ANY INJURY

CATEGORY: 2: Inflammation

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENT: Beta Carotene

In any sport, an injury can mean the difference between crossing the finish line first or fifth, between a cheering crowd and a booing mob, between money in the bank and bankruptcy. How many times has your favorite team lost a game or season because important players were sidelined by injuries that didn’t heal fast enough? Maybe you’re a weekend warrior who uses tennis or running to unwind, or maybe you’re a professional with millions riding on every performance. Whatever, an injury can be a literal game changer.

Sports injuries are most often classified as either acute and traumatic, like an Achilles tendon tear, or arising from overuse of a particular body part, like tennis elbow. An acute sports injury is one that happens suddenly or rapidly and progresses quickly. An overuse injury takes longer to develop.

Acute sports injuries range from mild to life threatening, and result from a sudden impact or traumatic event to the body resulting in bruises, sprains, strains, tears, fractures, head traumas, and other injuries. Acute injuries can take months or years to heal. Some never truly heal because inflammation is never brought under control. In those cases, the injury can remain painful and limiting for the rest of a person’s life. These injuries can occur during all types of sports, even simple exercise, and usually involve the musculoskeletal system that includes ligaments, tendons, muscles, and bones.

Definitions: A ligament is tough elastic fibrous tissue that connects bones or cartilage to joints, holding the joint together. A tendon is tough, inelastic fibrous tissue that connects muscles to bone, permitting mobility.

FREE RADICALS LEAD TO OXIDATION, CAUSE INFLAMMATION, AND
SLOW DOWN HEALING TIME

All sports injuries are accompanied by inflammation. Anytime you receive any damage whatsoever to your body, inflammation will be present. And
where there is inflammation there is pain. It is the same inflammation that
determines how long it’s going to take your injury to heal, and whether you will measure the time in days, or years. If you can stop inflammation quickly, your healing will be fast and easy. If you can’t, your injury may never really heal.

When you suffer a sports injury, like an Achilles tendon tear, many things happen on a cellular level that affect your healing time:

Inside a cell are two electrons that must remain together for the cell to remain stable, and free of inflammation and disease. Think of a social system where marriage is mandatory and you will be shot on sight if you are found without your partner.

The tear to the Achilles tendon affects thousands of cells, destroying many of them outright. But it only damages others and breaks the bond between the two electrons. There are suddenly a whole lot of single electrons in the area of the injury. As soon as the bond is broken and the two electrons are separated, each single electron turns into a free radical, dangerous and unstable. Think of a free radical as a lonely single desperately searching for a partner.

The free radicals in the injury immediately attack nearby healthy cells, attempting to separate them and hook up with one of the electrons. Unfortunately, free radicals are better at separating two other electrons than they are in partnering up with one of the stolen electrons, so free radical growth becomes exponential.

When too many free radicals are present in the tendon, oxidation occurs. Free radical oxidation is the final condition for inflammation. You know what happens to an avocado when you cut it and leave it on the counter. It is an excess of free radicals that leads to oxidation and causes the pulp to rot. Think of yourself as a larger more complex avocado, but still capable of the same kind of internal decay. That decay is driven by free radicals in both you and the avocado. During the healing process, unless you take steps to prevent it, free radicals will continue to proliferate decay, cause inflammation, and thereby slow down your body’s ability to heal the tendon.

HEALING SPORTS INJURIES IS ALL ABOUT NUMBERS

It’s as if you were trying to clean a floor. But behind you is a gremlin putting
down mud, so you have to keep going back over what you’ve already cleaned. Yes, you will eventually get it cleaned, but it will take twenty times longer than it would if the gremlin weren’t there. Free radicals are your injury’s gremlin. Your body will heal a spot, only to turn around and find that free radicals have chewed it up again. That’s why healing takes longer than it should.

The focus then has to be on the number of free radicals present at the site of the injury at any given time, and how to neutralize that number so that your body can clean the floor just once. Let’s call that number (X), as in there are (X) number of free radicals present. We are assigning the total number of free radicals with this designation, because we have no way of knowing exactly how many are present.

While we don’t know the exact number of free radicals present, we do know that if we send in an equal or greater number of antioxidant cells, to match or
exceed the number of free radicals, we can stop free radical production for the time being, as well as, the oxidation, inflammation, and pain. Therefore, if the number of free radicals equals (X), we need (X+1) amount of antioxidant cells to neutralize them. In a one-on-one encounter, using this formula means that the antioxidants will always outnumber the free radicals, and healing will be fast and relatively painless.

Antioxidants protect any living being from free radical damage due to a unique characteristic they possess. Unlike partnered electrons in a healthy cell that become dangerous free radicals when separated, an antioxidant cell remains stable even after the two electrons are separated. Meaning, an antioxidant cell’s two electrons will not turn into free radicals when they are attacked and separated by free radicals.

The antioxidant ends the electron stealing chain reaction, and by partnering with the free radical, returns it to healthy cell status again. The single antioxidant electron left behind after the donation can be used to neutralize another free radical or be harmlessly expelled from your body as waste matter. Either way, it performs its function without attacking any other cells along the way.

Antioxidants are the second important number in the equation. If you can send in (X+1) number of antioxidant cells to meet with and neutralize every free radical present, you will heal quickly.

WHY YOU NEED LARGE DOES OF BETA CAROTENE TO SPEED UP HEALING

We know there are (X) number of free radicals present in the Achilles tendon. We know that for every free radical, we need an antioxidant cell that will donate an electron to neutralize it.

There are apparently millions upon millions of free radicals present in the Achilles tendon, because that’s how much Beta Carotene it takes to end the symptoms of inflammation, when you are recuperating from a sports injury or surgery. Luckily, the signs of inflammation are easy to spot, so you know when you have it and when it’s gone. Your symptoms weaken and disappear when you take enough Beta Carotene.

The point is that when you are taking enough Beta Carotene, you will feel the difference. The discomfort melts away. Each dose will last about 3-8 hours. Less or more depending on where you are in your healing and how serious your injury is. To keep pain down and healing moving at a good pace you have to flood your system with Beta Carotene and keep the levels high for a sustained period. The large doses will not hurt you. They are being put to good use in ending free radical growth.

Remember two things: (1) Beta Carotene is concentrated nutrition, a food source. It should not be viewed as a prescription drug because it isn’t a drug. It’s a food. (2) You are trying to accomplish the neutralization of millions of free radicals. That’s why you need these large doses.

You have to send in one antioxidant cell for each free radical present. As dangerous as a free radical is, all it wants is a partner electron. Give it that by way of Beta Carotene, and it will stop misbehaving. Your wound will continue to produce free radicals as it heals so you will have to take Beta Carotene during the entire healing process.

You cannot possibly get enough antioxidants from your food to significantly speed up your healing time, no matter how healthy your diet. So you need supplementation through Beta Carotene. What good will it do to follow what
a bottle says and take one or two softgels, when there are fifty times that
amount of free radicals currently decaying your tissue? You need an amount of antioxidants that will match or exceed the amount of free radicals present.

Think of it in law enforcement terms. You are chief of police in a small town threatened with takeover by a motorcycle gang called The Free Radicals. You’re on conference call with the National Guard. When asked how many more people you need, you glance out your window. You do a quick count of the shiny black motorcycles darkening the curb, and find there are about 100. You have a force of 10. That means you need 90 bodies to simply match the gang’s. Since you’ve been given the option wouldn’t you play it safe and ask for more than you think you’ll need?

You most certainly would not ask for 40 people, ensuring that you’ll be outnumbered two to one. You’d ask for enough to outnumber The Free
Radicals. It’s the same thing with your body. If there are millions of free
radicals putrefacting your Achilles wound, you need millions of antioxidant
cells to neutralize them and hurry up your healing.

Keep in mind what the point of the high doses is, and how pointless it is for you to take less antioxidants than there are free radicals. When I say it’s a numbers game, I refer to the number of free radicals on one side, and the number of antioxidants necessary to neutralize them on the other. If you play the numbers correctly, match free radical with an equal amount of antioxidant cells, you can shut down the discomfort sooner, feel little or no pain during the healing period, and shorten that period by half or more. Plus, any scars will be lessened.

Beta Carotene will neutralize free radicals at a remarkable pace and enable your injury to heal much faster than you are used to. Vitamin D3 supports the Beta Carotene in its healing functions. D3 is recommended over just Vitamin D because it more closely replicates the Vitamin D made on your skin from exposure to sunlight. But if you can’t find D3 use plain Vitamin D.

Notes

► If you take Beta Carotene without also taking Vitamin D, you will deplete your stores of Vitamin D and develop a Vitamin D deficiency. It usually manifests as sores on the inside of the mouth. Be sure to take Vitamin D when you take Beta Carotene and there will be no problem.

► Do not use mixed carotenoid products. They are only a marketing gimmick and will not work the way Beta Carotene will, not the way I have described here.

► If you select a certain dosage of Beta Carotene and feel better but still have symptoms of inflammation, raise your dosage. When you get it right, discomfort ceases until it’s time for the next dose. You can also add a third dose at lunch if necessary to relieve your symptoms.

ANIMALS GET CANCER FOR THE SAME REASONS PEOPLE DO AND IN THE SAME WAY

CATEGORIES: 2: Inflammation, 3: Blockage, 11: Pet Health

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENTS: Beta Carotene, Lecithin

(I purposely misspell antioxidant to make a point.)

nPlD1q

The same stressors that cause cancer in people also cause cancer in cats and dogs; or rabbits and mice for that matter. Cancer is the leading cause of death in cats, and after euthanasia the number one killer of dogs as well. Any multi-cellular creature that tries to exist in our oxygen rich environment, from ant to acrocanthosaurus, is subject to constant cellular bombardment and degeneration from free radical formation. Degeneration that is the road to cancer.

Formula: Cancer: I understand cancer, know how to prevent it, how to stop it once it’s started, even how to grab the coat tails of someone who’s been sent home to die with it, and give them back their years. From my experience I see cancer as a mathematical equation that looks something like the following, elegant and predictable:

 (C = FR > X + (O + I).)

Where cancer equals Free Radical growth greater than X, with X representing a tolerance level that varies depending on other individual factors, plus subsequent Oxidation (cell decay), and Inflammation.

Cells are damaged and free radicals created in your pet’s body by many stressors: (a) naturally, of course, as a result of simple metabolism, but also from (b) irritation, like a too tight collar or harness that frays the coat and leaves under-skin red and tender, (c) injury, like getting a paw run over by a full shopping cart in the parking lot, causing tenderness, (d) infection, like that from stepping on a nail or eating an infected rodent, (e) toxins, like radiation or cigarette smoke, (f) poor diet, that has a lower level of anti-oxidants than the amount of free radicals created, and (g) other stressors specific to an individual animal.

HOW A PET’S CELLS ARE DAMAGED AND CONVERTED TO FREE RADICALS

Your pet’s body is comprised of cells. Inside a cell, each electron has to have a partner electron in order for the cell to remain stable and healthy—and non cancerous. In other words, the two electrons have to remain together inside the cell or there will be trouble. Trouble comes when something happens to damage the bond between the partnered electrons in a healthy cell. If they become separated, or one of them is destroyed, the single electron left behind becomes a free radical, unstable and dangerous.

The single electron, who is now a free radical, goes berserk when it finds itself suddenly alone, without its partner electron. (How would you feel if someone took your spouse or partner away?) It turns and immediately attacks a nearby healthy cell that has both electrons. It desperately tries to break them apart, so it can steal one electron and become stable and healthy again itself. If it is successful it once again becomes stable with its stolen electron, but the cell it disrupted and stole from becomes a free radical itself and continues the angry process. A cascade effect leads to severe cellular damage and mutations like cancer.

As an analogy, think of the bonded electrons in a healthy cell as a married couple in a social system where being single is prohibited. In this system, two people (electrons) who are part of a marriage are stable, acceptable. No problem. Live long and prosper. But a single person (electron) without a partner is a free radical who can only prosper by breaking up another married pair. Like someone who breaks up a marriage and runs off with one of the partners, free radicals seek to destroy other nearby stable cellular relationships for their own benefit, so they can survive. A free radical is an electron fighting for its life.

Although free radicals are a natural part of living, like the home wrecker, when too many of them build up due to the factors listed above, you have oxidation and inflammation. Any area of the body can take a certain amount of free radical growth in their neighborhoods and be fine. It’s when too many free radicals show up that the problems begin. Think of your own house or apartment. If you were having a party and planned on 15 guests, how chaotic would it be if 1500 people showed up?

WHEN TOO MANY FREE RADICALS ARE CREATED YOU HAVE OXIDATION

Oxidation is predicated on reaching a threshold level of free radicals that overwhelms the body. The simplest way of thinking about oxidation is that it is spoilage, aging, decay, and eventual cell death. You know what happens to an avocado slice left out in the “open air.” The exposed flesh turns brown from contact with oxygen. It oxidizes, spoils, due to an excess of free radicals. The same thing happens inside your body. After a while the avocado will begin to brown and rot, and you won’t eat it. That’s a good instinct, because you would be literally eating free radicals! That’s why you should never eat salad that has browned, or other food that is obviously past its prime, unless you absolutely have to. Broadly speaking, living on Earth is being left out in the “open air” and that’s why aging is another form of oxidation caused by free radicals.

HOW ANTI-OXIDANTS NEUTRALIZE FREE RADICALS AND PREVENT INFLAMMATION AND CANCER

Anti-oxidants protect your pet’s body from free radical damage because they have a unique characteristic. Anti-oxidants neutralize free radicals by donating one of their own electrons to the free radical, helping it to become partnered and healthy again. It’s as if the anti-oxidant marries the free radical and thereby calms it down.

An anti-oxidant cell also has two partnered electrons, but wonderfully, anti-oxidants are stable in either form, as a single electron or a married pair. Unlike the partnered electrons in a healthy cell that become free radicals when separated, anti-oxidants give up one of their electrons without becoming a free radical.

Anti-oxidants stop the problem at its source. When an anti-oxidant cell encounters a free radical it ends the electron-stealing chain reaction by freely donating one of its electrons, turning the free radical back into a healthy cell. Like evil Mr. Hyde drinking an antidote and turning back into the good Dr. Jekyll.

As an animal’s guardian, you have a choice to either let free radicals run loose in your pet’s system, and hope they don’t turn into cancer, and subject it to surgery if they do. Or you can send in anti-oxidants to partner with the free radicals and return them to normalcy, thereby avoiding disease without stressing the animal.

The first thing a sous chef does after cutting avocado slices, and before serving them with your grilled chicken sandwich, is to sprinkle on some lemon or lime juice. She does this because the anti-oxidants in the citrus keep the flesh from turning brown and decaying right in front of you. The same thing can happen in your pet’s body, because anti-oxidants neutralize free radicals. Your pets need Beta Carotene in supplement form to avoid cancer. If you have an outdoor cat who regularly hunts and eats its kills there is a greater risk of free radicals.

Make sure you feed your pet with a quality pet food. Read the labels of the pet food you purchase. If it’s made out of animal by products instead of real meat, with strange sounding additives that have no food value, or doesn’t have added supplements, you’re putting your pet at risk. Poor quality food won’t give your animal companion any more protection against cancer than it does you. Your animals need enough anti-oxidants to fight the free radical production that comes from a natural part of living. It is the lack of anti-oxidants that causes your cats and dogs to get cancer.

SAMIRA THE CALICO

Samira has the softest white coat you’ve ever touched, with random sized patches of black and rust, especially on her tail. She is both dainty and thug like. Will sit primly in your lap purring and accepting caresses until you think you’ve lost the use of both legs to circulation failure. And then suddenly lean over and bite her housemate, Trill, sleeping nearby. Or bound across the room in two leaps to attack, Phoebe, her other housemate. She also has daily skirmishes with an imaginary enemy that no one but she can see. She gets in such a frenzy chasing and running from this specter that I have photos of her twisting manically five feet in the air. She might suddenly decide that Trill needs grooming. And she can be a very aggressive groomer, sometimes using her tongue like a slap upside the head.

Sami is also a cancer survivor, but only because she underwent the terrifying ordeal of surgery to remove a tumor on her leg. Sami had a rough start in life, and the stress from the various elements of that ordeal are what caused her to get excess free radicals, which escalated into inflammation and cancer. I was around Sami while she had her surgery, and saw firsthand how unhappy it made her and her guardians. By supplementing your pets’ diets with Beta Carotene you can all avoid the cancer trauma.

The following was written by David Rubincam, who saved Samira’s life. It is excerpted from a longer version that first appeared in the online newsletter of Vashon Island Pet Protectors, a no kill nonprofit. For a photo of Samira visit vipp.org. Click “Adopt” and “Paw Print Stories.”

SAMIRA’S LONG JOURNEY TO THE UNITED STATES

I worked as the Legal Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2008. Nothing in the U.S. can prepare you for the harsh and inhospitable landscape in Saudi Arabia, which has the world’s largest desert, Rub al-Khali, and the dubious distinction of being a country with no permanent rivers or bodies of water. Yet even in the most unforgiving places, you can discover miracles that result from the actions of many good people. One of those miracles was Samira, whose name means “delightful companion,” in Arabic. I chose that name because it perfectly describes her, a small, mostly white Calico.

Unlike Americans, Saudis generally don’t keep pets. The cats you do see are usually street strays with a projected life span of four miserable years in the hostile, arid climate. Kittens usually die in their first week.

I spent time in a remote desert area at a security airbase protected by the Saudi Royal Guard and the U.S. Air Force. Just outside the entrance to the base, Samira gave birth to a litter of four kittens. By the time she was discovered, two of the kittens were dead. Knowing that the Americans had an Army vet assigned to the base, the Royal Guard kindly turned over the severely dehydrated and starving animals. The vet returned them to good health and placed the kittens in good homes.

But what to do about Sami? When it came to adoption, she had more than the harsh environment and the streets working against her. She had also apparently suffered blunt force trauma to the left side of her face, the kind that might result from hitting a wall or falling from a high distance, and possibly a stroke, which led to some paralysis and loss of feeling. She lost control over her left eye, which she can’t completely close or blink, and the left side of her mouth which lets a tooth protrude. Even her whiskers on the left are not as long or as full as the ones on the right side.

For nine months people came and stared at Sami, who is a truly beautiful cat, but saw only her handicaps and left without taking her. It didn’t help matters that she wouldn’t let anyone touch or pick her up. You risked getting scratched if you tried—if you could even get your hands on her; she was that fast. Still, the vet wouldn’t give up and kept looking for a home.

I happened across a photo of Sami on the clinic’s website, and was immediately smitten. I told myself it was okay to just look. I couldn’t easily adopt a cat, given my constraints. I thought it would be impossible to transport her back to Vashon at the end of my assignment. When I got to the clinic there were workers waiting in bemusement to see what would happen when I tried to pick her up. They warned me off, so I sat in a chair in front of her kennel, and didn’t approach her. She came out, sauntered directly over to me, hopped up on my lap, curled in my arms and purred. She stretched up and licked my face with a look in her eyes that said, “What took you so long?”

Everyone in the room realized immediately that I had just been adopted. Now I had to worry about the logistics of getting my new girl home. I made arrangements to pick her up the next day—which would also give me time to see what, if any, cat supplies I could find in Riyadh! When I returned, inside waiting to greet me and offer congratulations was the Air Base Commanding General, who it turns out is a “cat person” too. There were about 15 U.S. security personnel who had helped care for Sami over the past nine months, and had come to say goodbye. Most surprising was seeing that the Royal Guards who first found Sami had come to say goodbye as well. Despite her feisty nature she was a sweet presence and would be sorely missed by all.

It took two months to complete all the paperwork necessary to bring Samira home to Vashon Island, in Puget Sound. She needed an Export Permit from the Saudi Ministry of Agriculture, a European Union health certificate to land in France, and a U.S.D.A. Health Certificate to land and disembark at Sea-Tac. These documents were her “pet passport.” In the end, Samira came home in style, riding all the way to Seattle in the cabin with me.

The day we left, Samira was too sleepy to notice due to a sedative the vet gave her; something I was soon to regret. The first leg was from Riyadh to Paris. About half way through the seven-hour flight, Sami began to cry, scratch and bite at the webbed sides of the carrier. The sedative that worked according to prescription at ground level was suddenly affecting her like PCP, and she was freaking out. Fortunately, most of the airline crew were either “cat people,” or had seen this happen before. They let me take Sami into the crew’s lounge. After two hours the sedative wore off. Sami calmed down finally, genuinely exhausted from the ordeal. The Air France crew was incredibly supportive. They each came to see how she was doing, and brought her breakfast. To my surprise, even the airport veterinarian stopped by.

Sami is now at our home on Vashon, and has learned to trust my wife, Uwanna, and get along with at least Trill, one of our other two cats. We have to keep her separated from the baby, Phoebe. I believe the lesson of Samira’s story is that it took caring and charitable actions by a lot of people from a number of countries, backgrounds, and religions to save her and bring her here, to a loving home with acres of fenced property, where she is discovering the color green, cold weather, and yes—rain—for the first time. When it rains, and since this is Seattle that means all the time, she can’t wait to get outside and play in it. It fascinates her!

Epilogue: Sami is healthy and cancer free, still a little crazy, and living in Moscow with her guardians and housemate cats. She’s quite the international gadabout.

Beta Carotene will neutralize free radicals in your pet’s system, but it needs the help of Vitamin D3, which assists Beta Carotene in its free radical fighting functions; and Lecithin, which will break up blockages and cellular wastes generated by free radicals.

NOTES

► If Beta Carotene is taken without also taking Vitamin D, it will deplete the stores of Vitamin D and a Vitamin D deficiency may develop. As a rule, Beta Carotene and Vitamin D should always be taken together.

► I have recommended Puritan’s Pride brand because their Lecithin is from soybeans only, and contains a minimum of 70 mg of phosphatides in each 1200 mg softgel, equivalent to 61 percent phosphatides. The value of a Lecithin product is determined by the percentage of phosphatides it contains, because they activate the emulsifying process in mammals. You may use another brand, but make sure it conforms to or exceeds these specifications or it will not work.

POTASSIUM IODIDE IS NOT WHAT YOU NEED TO PROTECT YOURSELF

CATEGORY: 2: Inflammation

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENT: Beta Carotene

In speaking to parliament recently, the Prime Minister of Japan said that his country’s biggest crises in decades was the combination of the quake, tsunami, and nuclear accident.

radiation hazard symbol

You can rebuild after a quake brings down a bridge. You can clean up, dry out, and rebuild after a tsunami. But a nuclear accident is harder to “fix,” and has the potential to greatly endanger areas far away from the original accident. Time magazine reported that trace radioactive elements from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant traveled over 6,500 miles to show up in rainwater that fell on Boston. Since global winds move from the west toward the east, those radioactive traces had to cross a lot of America before they got to Boston, and kept going.

The planet is smaller than we want to think. And we are all sharing it with each other, despite our claims to sovereignty. International borders didn’t stop the trace elements from crossing America to rain down on Boston. We share the same sun, the same water, and the same air, ultimately. It is entirely legitimate, then, that people on the other side of the world from the accident are worried about radiation poisoning.

The biggest concern associated with radiation poisoning seems to be cancer of the thyroid, which people think can be prevented by taking potassium iodide. Directly after the reactor explosions, sales of potassium iodide soared, and many online websites sold out. Unfortunately, potassium iodide cannot be relied on to protect against thyroid cancer, especially not in the dosages available without a prescription. And you’re fooling yourself if you think there aren’t 20 to 30 other easy spots in your body, besides the thyroid, where radiation poisoning can and will cause inflammation and cancer.

Apparently, the association in the public consciousness between the thyroid and potassium iodide stems from the use of radioactive iodine to treat goiters, a disorder of the thyroid.

Definition: Goiter: This is an enlargement of the thyroid gland that looks like a round lump that continues to grow if not treated. It is usually caused by a lack of iodine, which is necessary to produce thyroid hormone. The great lakes and Midwest areas of the United States were once called the “goiter belt,” because of the high number of cases reported there that were attributable to iodine poor soil. A goiter grows because the thyroid gland is trying harder and harder to extract iodine from your body. As it works harder, it continues to grow bigger. A goiter usually indicates a simple Kelp deficiency, as Kelp is a great source of natural iodine. A friend was scheduled for radioactive iodine treatment to reduce a goiter. I convinced him to postpone treatment and try Kelp. A month later the goiter was gone.

To protect yourself from radiation poisoning you have to understand what’s happening in your body, your whole body not just your thyroid. Every part of you is composed of cells. High radiation exposure destroys cellular integrity everywhere on a gargantuan scale, breaking apart electrons, and setting loose a cataclysmic amount of free radicals. It is free radicals that harm the thyroid and other parts of your body after radiation exposure. And potassium iodide does nothing to prevent or neutralize free radicals. Nothing.

Too many free radicals are what lead first to inflammation and then cause cancer—in the thyroid, yes, but also in the breasts, liver, lungs, prostate, stomach, kidney, uterus—in short, anywhere and everywhere in your body. Not just your thyroid is at risk when you are exposed to radiation; your entire body is put at risk. Take potassium iodide if you wish, but it’s more important to focus on antioxidants, the most potent and effective of which is Beta Carotene.

Tips: Please take the time to read Blog 3: The Danger of Inflammation, for a discussion of how free radicals are created, and why antioxidants work so well to neutralize them. I went into great detail that I don’t want to repeat every time I discuss inflammation. There is also a list of foods high in antioxidants that you should add to your diet, immediately, if you can.  Please also read Blog 4, Cancer, to learn how that same inflammation therapy stops cancer’s growth anywhere in the body. Even after you have been diagnosed. If you get the bad news, just buck up and get busy with Beta Carotene. This is a fight you can win.

RADIATION EXPOSURE FROM A LONG DISTANCE

I was on the west coast of America at the time of Japan’s nuclear accident. Up and down the coast everyone was worried about possible radiation exposure, despite assurances from officials that trace radiation couldn’t travel as far as the United States. After checking the umbrellas in Boston however, we now know that wasn’t true.

Since the core issue here is the creation of excess free radicals from radiation exposure, the focus should be on consumption of enough antioxidants to counter those free radicals, one on one. Each free radical electron needs an antioxidant electron to neutralize it and return it to healthy cell status. There is no better antioxidant for this purpose than Beta Carotene.

UP CLOSE AND EXTENSIVE RADIATION EXPOSURE

If you were close to the explosion, meaning anywhere in Japan, you need to do more internal repair than those at a long distance. But regardless of the size or magnitude of your exposure, even if you’re one of the workers who had to go inside the reactor to contain the matter, large quantities of Beta Carotene will protect you and prevent cancer and ultimate organ failure.

Free radicals are what you have to worry about from radiation exposure, no matter the amount. But free radicals are all you really have to worry about. If you can handle and control the free radical production in your body, you can handle radiation exposure. But the greater the exposure to radiation, the higher will be the number of free radicals created, and the more antioxidants that will be needed.

Let’s look at the situation for what it is, a battle between your troops (antioxidants), and the enemy troops (free radicals). (My father was career Army so expect of lot of battle references in my blogs.) Pretend that the day of retribution has come. Your troops are about to enter the battlefield to wage war against your biggest enemy—the slayer of your family, friends, and future—high level, radiation-based cancer.

You have good intelligence that there are 1000 free radical troops on the field awaiting you, and another 1000 in a fallback position, ready to back them up. But for now, you are facing only 2000 free radical enemy troops, because they haven’t had a chance to increase their numbers yet. You are tasked with eradicating them before they can multiply and get strong enough to do real harm. You aren’t worried, because you have over 5000 antioxidant troops under your command ready to deploy. And you know that for every enemy free radical, you have to deploy an opponent antioxidant warrior, because it will always boil down mathematically to a one on one fight. Antioxidant electron against free radical electron.

Given these facts, what do you do tactically? Do you decide to just lay down and not fight back at all? Probably not. Knowing it’s a one on one fight, do you send in 50 of your antioxidant warriors to face 2000 free radical troops? What about 500? Again, probably not. With 5000 antioxidant troops at your disposal, you might not even send in an equal number of 2000 troops to match the enemy’s numbers. To ensure success in such an important battle you might try to outnumber the enemy; you might send in all 5000 antioxidant troops and make it a slaughter. With your superior numbers, the options are all yours to exercise.

If you were in Japan at the time of the exposure, or worse, close to the point of origin, there are tens of thousands of free radicals ganging up inside you and starting the inflammation process, which will be followed eventually by cancer, or some other inflammatory based disease. The minute you were hit with radiation, your cells began to die and mutate into free radicals—throughout your entire body not just in your thyroid. Since there are so many free radical troops wreaking havoc inside, you need an equal or higher number of antioxidant troops to fight them off, to neutralize them. Beta Carotene is the best free radical fighting antioxidant available, if you take enough of it.

I prescribe large doses of Beta Carotene for an extended period to give the body time to neutralize enough free radicals to prevent serious long-term harm from occurring. Don’t let the following dose levels scare you. The doses have to be large enough to counter the large number of free radicals loosed in your system. Beta Carotene will not harm you, and could save your life.

NOTES

► If you take Beta Carotene without also taking Vitamin D, you will deplete your stores of Vitamin D and develop a Vitamin D deficiency. It usually manifests as sores on the inside of the mouth. Always take Vitamin D when you take Beta Carotene.

► Do not use mixed carotenoid products. They are only a marketing gimmick and will not work the way Beta Carotene will, not the way I have described here.

Vitamin D3 is recommended because it more closely replicates the Vitamin D made naturally on your skin from contact with the sun. But if you can’t find D3, take straight Vitamin D.

PREVENT AND ELIMINATE IT ANYWHERE IN YOUR BODY!

CATEGORIES: 2: Inflammation, 3: Blockage, 4: Excess Toxicity

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENT: BETA CAROTENE

[For background on how cancer starts and proceeds inside the body, please read: Blog 3: The Danger of Inflammation. You will also find there a list of foods high in antioxidants that help your body ward off cancer.]

This is the big one, cancer. The ugly 800 pound gorilla squatting in everyone’s psyche, rife with evil potential, making you quake in fear of its looming presence. Will it tap a shoulder one afternoon and upset all your happy plans? Maybe steal your very life? Or that of someone you love? Everyone reading this can think of more than one person this monster has killed, or tried to.

The good news is that you can stop being intimidated by cancer. It can be prevented, and prevention is not difficult. It can also be eliminated once it’s started, up to a point, and of course that’s harder to do. But it can be done without prescriptions, with nothing more than common food supplements. The human body is capable of coming back from situations much worse than you might imagine, if you give it the tools it needs to make repairs. If you’re a crafts person, tailor, or engineer, imagine trying to make repairs to a fireplace, a jacket, or a boiler, without the proper tools. Your body is the same way in that it needs specific tools to make specific repairs.

Antioxidants, in quantities too great to get from food alone, are what your body needs to prevent and repair itself of cancer, because antioxidants prevent free radical growth. All cancers can be treated with the same supplements, and antioxidants will prevent cancer even if you are genetically predisposed to the disease. A predisposition only means that you may need higher doses, not that you can’t be successfully treated with food supplements, and thereby avoid the disease.

THE CASE OF JIM M.

It’s probably not good marketing to use as an example a man who died of his cancer, but Jim would want me to share his story. He used to introduce me at lectures he set up at churches, libraries, and private clubs in San Diego. He always opened like a preacher on the mount, with a frank and sometimes fiery telling of his cancer and how supplements were helping him, admonishing people to take better care of their bodies lest they end up like him. In his own way Jim was a hero. The way he faced life, and more importantly death, made it so. And you didn’t have to be told that Jim was a sick man. One look and you knew.

Jim attended a lecture I gave on nutrition at a local library. He didn’t introduce himself then, but called the next day. He wanted to talk about a friend with cancer who’d been sent home to die, with 40-50 malignant tumors in his body. With only six weeks to live he’d been advised to straighten his affairs and say goodbye to his family.

The friend had been fighting cancer for years and was told he could possibly live for three months, if he let them remove his gall bladder. The friend said no. At that point, Jim said, the man would rather face death than another surgery. He wanted to know if I thought my supplement therapy would help him, because he was desperate to try anything; what did he have to lose? I said yes, and gave him instructions on changing his diet and taking Beta Carotene and other supplements.

Jim and I continued to talk by phone about his friend. He told me the man was improving, but wouldn’t give me any details, not even his name. And he put me off whenever I asked to speak directly to him. Jim said he was a celebrity, very private, and wouldn’t agree to it.

Three months after our first conversation, Jim arranged for me to speak at his church on pot luck Wednesday. It would be the first time we met in person. I entered the lobby of the basement space and immediately heard Jim’s voice. His broad back was to me, but I recognized his baritone. He was just finishing a conversation and I called out to him. He turned around, and I couldn’t breathe for a few seconds.

There was no friend. It was Jim himself who had 40-50 malignant tumors on his body, nine that were visible above his blue oxford shirt, on his neck, face and head. I counted them in those few breathless seconds as time slowed and he crossed to me. It looked like the cancer was taking over his body, consuming him, driving him out of it in a literal sense. It was hard but my eyes never strayed from his. His face blossomed with pleasure when he saw it was me. He hugged me, and without letting go, dragged me across the lobby to a large ornate mirror on the wall. Jim was a 50-year-old businessman and former pro footballer. He decided we were going to the mirror and that’s where we went.

He had wanted to surprise me and he did. He happily pointed to a huge tumor on his temple that looked like a baseball lodged there. Or at least that was what it used to look like, he said. But now, the baseball looked more like a volcano, sunken in the middle. He pulled up his sleeves and pointed to other tumors on his hands and arms that also were shrinking. “In just three months,” he said. “Can you believe it?”

That’s when it hit me. Jim was supposed to be dead weeks ago. At least according to his doctors. But thanks to Beta Carotene he was still walking around.

After dinner Jim told his story to the congregation before I spoke. You could hear his pain echoed in his voice and words. He wasn’t angry because he was the one chosen to suffer, but because he felt that too little was being done to warn and help people. He asked the audience the question many of my subjects ask themselves. “If Lynn’s therapies work so well why isn’t my doctor using them?” And in Jim’s case, “instead of sending me home to die?” Jim’s doctors offered him essentially two horrors: chemotherapy or the knife, in exchange for 6-12 weeks of tortured life. But it’s hard to blame them because it’s all they know.

Jim lived for five years, not six weeks. One day I got a sad phone call from his mother. After she explained, I told her I felt like a failure because Jim had still died of cancer. She said he had anticipated my reaction and asked her to remind me of what he would have faced without my help. That he was grateful for the extra time he had been given. I realized immediately that she was right, and felt small for trying to make it about me.

The sad thing is that this happened almost ten years ago and I hadn’t yet discovered what the large doses could do, and that they were not only necessary but perfectly safe. I had Jim on only 25 softgels three times daily, enough to prolong his life, but not enough to give it back to him for real. If it happened today, I would have him on 50 softgels four to five times daily to destroy cancer already started. At the higher doses, Jim’s cancer wouldn’t have been able to finally kill him.

FIGHTING CANCER WITH BETA CAROTENE

The most important thing to remember about cancer is that before it can be a cancer, it has to be an inflammation. If you can stop the inflammation, you can prevent cancer anywhere in your body. No inflammation, no cancer. And there is no better inflammation fighter available than Beta Carotene.

ONE DAY A WEEK LIQUID FAST (This is important. We’re fighting cancer here.)► This is an entire 24-hour-plus period. You wake up on fast day, consume only liquids for the whole day, go to sleep, then wake up and break your fast. If you fast Saturday, you will eat nothing from Friday night until Sunday morning. Go easy on your stomach for your first meal.► Pick a day when you are home with no or few responsibilities. Alternate drinking 8 ozs of carrot juice with your juice(s) of choice. Drink the 8 ozs every hour, at the same time each hour, for 12 hours. For instance, if you drink 8 ozs of carrot juice at 8:30 a.m., at 9:30 you might have a tomato juice, then 10:30 carrot juice again. 11:30 maybe pineapple, 12:30 carrot, and so forth. You will continue every hour like this, with your last drink at 8:30 p.m.► You may use heated vegetable or chicken broth in place of any alternate juice, but not the carrot.► Sit down some place quiet and sip the juice or broth. Don’t gulp it down. In addition to the juices and broths, you may drink as much water as you like.► It is imperative that you relax while you’re fasting and not tax yourself in any way. This includes balancing your check book, surfing the web, and reading email. Also, no cleaning, talking on the phone, having friends over, or even leaving the house. Nothing that saps your energy or causes even a ripple of stress or excitement. You are to lay around and do nothing except drink your juice, read a book, watch TV or a movie, knit, stare at a wall, daydream, sleep.► After several hours of drinking juice you may start to feel really tired, exhausted even. Don’t fight it. Go to bed. Many people experience a long and restful sleep after a fast day, and wake up feeling exhilarated.► If you drink on time exactly, like you’re supposed to, your hunger will decrease and disappear after a few hours. If you miss your feeding, your appetite will rage. If hunger becomes unbearable at any time, you may munch on a handful of almonds (salted or unsalted, and not the whole bag, please). But eat no other food on your fast day. Your goal is to have nothing but liquids for a whole day.► Under NO circumstances should you fast without drinking liquids other than water. Fasting doesn’t mean you provide no nutrition to your body.► The purpose of the weekly fast is to help your body detoxify and get rid of the organic wastes left from your cancer. There’s a lot of it and it’s disgusting. It has to go some place, and you want it out of your body. Plus, your body needs a chance to do serious repairs, utilizing all of its resources. That will be easier if you more or less stop for an entire day.► Take no supplements while you are fasting, but continue with the supplements once you are eating again.

At 1:00 p.m., serve him a healthy, comforting lunch and continue with his meals and supplements as usual.► I believe parents will be able to reason with a 7-11 year old regarding getting her to drink juice every hour. This may not be as easy with someone 4-6, especially using a drink as exotic as carrot juice. If this becomes a battle ground let it drop, and forget the fasting part of the regimen for now. But if the child knows she’s sick and how, you may be able to get her to drink with the explanation that it will make her better. It sure beats chemotherapy! Maybe promise to serve her favorites at the end of the fast—as long as it isn’t junk food?

NOTES

From above, where Puritan’s Pride is recommended: Beta Carotene #1223; Vitamin D3 1000 #15605; Aloe Vera Gel Liquid #1600; Lecithin Softgels #303; Lecithin Granules #1064; L-Cysteine #100; Vitamin C Complex #3140. Visit puritanspride.com or call 800-645-1030.

From above, where Solgar is recommended: Vitamin D3 400. Visit vitamnlife.com.

Beta Carotene will neutralize free radicals, end inflammation, kill cancer, and help reduce tumors. Vitamin D will assist Beta Carotene in its processes. Aloe Vera Gel Liquid has a cleansing effect in your body, especially your colon, through which most of the cancerous waste material must pass as it exits your body. Lecithin will break up and emulsify tumors or other mutated cells, and help rid the body of its wastes. L-Cysteine, like the fast, will help the body detoxify and get rid of the cancerous organic wastes. Vitamin C Complex will assist L-Cysteine in its detoxifying functions.

When you use Lecithin regularly, in the beginning you will notice that you are coughing up and blowing out of your nose, a lot more mucous than usual. This is happening because Lecithin is breaking up blockages and causing mucous and other wastes to be expelled. This is a good sign and after a while, as more and more organic debris is cleaned out of your body, you will find less and less mucous needing to be expelled.

I have recommended Puritan’s Pride brand because their Lecithin is from soybeans only, and contains a minimum of 70 mg of phosphatides in each 1200 mg softgel, equivalent to 61 percent phosphatides. The value of a Lecithin product is determined by the percentage of phosphatides it contains, because they activate the fat emulsifying process in your body. You may use another brand but make sure it conforms to these specifications or it will not work.

Use Lecithin Granules in and on other foods as often as possible. It is best used in blender drinks and sprinkled on salads, fresh cut fruit, and cereals. Make sure to consume it uncooked, in its natural state. One heaping tablespoon is equal to six softgels. You can’t take too much, so feel free to use it liberally.

When you open a bottle of L-Cysteine you will notice a strong odor. It’s supposed to smell like that.

Do not use L-Cysteine if you are allergic to sulphur.

If you take more Beta Carotene than your body can process you might get a mild, dull headache. It lasts as long as it takes your body to utilize the extra Beta Carotene, usually a couple hours. Some people get an itchy rash for a couple hours that can be relieved with Benadryl. There are no other side effects because Beta Carotene will not harm you. It will not turn your skin or the whites of your eyes orange, but in larger doses it will turn your feces that color.

If you take Beta Carotene without also taking Vitamin D, you will deplete your stores of Vitamin D and develop a Vitamin D deficiency. It usually manifests as sores on the inside of the mouth. Be sure to take Vitamin D when you take Beta Carotene and there will be no problem.

IT IS THE SINGLE BIGGEST HEALTH THREAT FACED BY YOU AND YOUR FAMILY

CATEGORY: 2: Inflammation

https://lynncapehartwellness.com/2013/09/01/blog-30-essay-2-the-seven-categories-of-illness/

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENT: BETA CAROTENE

I had planned to talk about preventing and eliminating cancer in this blog, but it occurred to me that first I should discuss inflammation, which is how cancer and many other diseases begin. No inflammation, no cancer.

Inflammation is a localized immune response, your body’s protective reaction to irritation, injury, infection, or toxin. It is characterized by tenderness, swelling, redness, and in most cases, pain. For sure, if you experience pain anywhere, it is due to inflammation.

In the following, I’ve used analogy, oversimplified the physical processes, misspelled antioxidant, and written twice as much as usual, in an attempt to make things clearer. I hope that by the time you finish this post you will have a better understanding of how cancer and other inflammation based diseases begin and proceed inside your body. If you do nothing more than learn to fend off inflammation for yourself and your family, you will have gone a long way toward remaining cancer free.

In order to understand inflammation, it helps to comprehend the roles played by (a) free radicals, (b) oxidation, and (c) anti-oxidants. These are words you’ve heard before probably, but do you really know what they mean?

Inflammation begins with cell damage by way of free radicals, so let’s start there.

FREE RADICALS

Your body is comprised of cells. Inside a cell, each electron has to have a partner electron in order for the cell to remain stable and healthy. In other words, the two electrons have to remain together, or there will be trouble.

Trouble comes when something happens to damage the bond between the partnered electrons in a healthy cell. If they become separated, or one of them is destroyed, the single electron(s) left behind becomes a free radical, unstable and dangerous.

The single electron/free radical goes berserk when it finds itself suddenly alone, without its partner electron. (How do you feel when you get dumped?) It turns and immediately attacks a nearby healthy cell that has both electrons. It desperately tries to break them apart, so it can steal one and become stable and healthy again itself. If it is successful it once again becomes stable with its stolen electron, but the cell it disrupted becomes a free radical and continues the angry process. A cascade effect can lead to severe cellular damage, and mutations like cancer.

As an analogy, think of the two bonded electrons in a healthy cell as a married couple in a social system where being single is prohibited. In this system, two people (electrons) who are part of a marriage are stable, acceptable. No problem. Live long and prosper.

But a single person (electron) without a partner is a free radical who can only prosper by breaking up another married pair. Like a single hussy or cad who breaks up a marriage and runs off with one of the partners, single electron/free radicals seek to destroy other nearby stable cells for their own benefit.

Cells are damaged and free radicals created in many ways: (a) naturally, as a result of metabolism, but also from (b) irritation, like that from a tight bracelet that leaves the skin red and tender at the end of the day, (c) injury, like banging your shin as you’re getting out of the tub, causing a lump that hurts and shows a bruise, (d) infection, anywhere in the body, (e) toxins, like air pollutants and radiation that bombard first responders, (f) poor diet, insufficient in anti-oxidants to control and neutralize free radicals, and (g) other stressors specific to an individual.

Although free radicals are a natural part of living, like the hussy and cad, when too many of them build up due to the factors listed above, you have oxidation and the beginning of inflammation–a precursor to cancer.

OXIDATION

The simplest way of thinking about oxidation is that it is spoilage, aging, decay–due to contact with oxygen. We live in an oxygen rich environment. You know what happens to an avocado slice left out in the open air. The exposed meat turns brown from contact with oxygen. It oxidizes, spoils, due to an excess of free radicals. Something similar happens inside your body. When you return to the kitchen later, the avocado will be rotting and you won’t eat it. That’s a good instinct, because you would literally be eating free radicals! That is why you should never eat salad that has browned, or other food that is obviously past its prime, unless you absolutely have to. Think of every bite as a mouthful of cancer.

You can even see free radical damage in the mirror. Broadly speaking, aging is another form of oxidation caused by free radicals.

LET’S FOLLOW THE DISEASE GROWTH CURVE IN A HYPOTHETICAL FIRE FIGHTER, FROM INJURY EVENT TO INFLAMMATION AND DISEASE:

John sustains massive cellular damage from exposure to pollution and radiation while fighting fires at ground zero, but has no idea what is happening to him. Inside many of John’s cells, the electrons break their bond and separate, due to damage from the toxin exposure.Large amounts of single electrons are let loose in John’s system as free radicals.Free radical growth continues and finally cascades, leading to oxidation (spoilage and decay), in many parts of John’s system.John’s immune system fights back with localized inflammation. There is some pain but he ignores it.The localized inflammation worsens, as does John’s pain. His cell production begins to mutate and malignant tumors develop on his liver and gallbladder.

New arterial pathways grow to nourish the new mutations and help them survive. Free radical growth continues unabated and new tumors form.

We know that John’s cancer is due to (e) toxins, from his exposure to pollutants and radiation after 911, and (f) poor diet, insufficient in anti-oxidants to neutralize the free radicals in his system. Enough anti-oxidants would have prevented the free radicals from cascading and resulting in inflammation and cancer.

ANTI-OXIDANTS

Okay, we’re all on the same page, right? We know that almost any harm that comes to a cell can lead to its electrons separating and turning into free radicals. Get too many of those mean little nasties and you have oxidation, which we know as spoilage and decay. It makes sense then that in order to counter oxidation, you need strong anti-oxidation. You can get this by way of eating certain foods, and taking Beta Carotene. Just remember, food alone is not enough to protect you.

FOODS HIGH IN ANTIOXIDANTS THAT YOU SHOULD EAT MORE OF INCLUDE:

FRUITS: acai berry, blueberry, blackberry, cranberry, raspberry, rose hips, strawberry, apple, prune, grape, plum, cherry, orange, lemon, lime, bilberry, watermelon, and others. VEGETABLES: spinach, kale, red cabbage, peppers, parsley, artichoke, Brussels sprout, carrot, red beet, ginger, potato, tomato, watercress, broccoli, and others.

DRIED FRUITS: apricot, prune, date, raisin, cranberry, cherry, pineapple, and others.

LEGUMES: red bean, black bean, pinto bean, lima bean, soybean, edamame, and others.

NUTS: peanut, pecan, walnut, hazelnuts, and others. OTHER: red wine and dark chocolate.

Anti-oxidants protect you from free radical damage because they have a unique characteristic. Unlike the married electrons in a healthy cell that become free radicals when separated, anti-oxidants give up one of their electrons without becoming a free radical. Think of an anti-oxidant as benevolent, selfless, who like a Mother Teresa wants only to help others in need.

That’s how anti-oxidants neutralize free radicals, by donating one of their own electrons to the free radical, helping it stop being a free radical and become healthy again. The anti-oxidant ends the electron stealing chain reaction discussed above, because anti-oxidants are stable in either form, as a single electron, or a married pair.

The first thing a sous chef does after cutting avocado slices, and before serving them with your grilled chicken sandwich, is to sprinkle on some lemon or lime juice. She does this because the anti-oxidants in the citrus keep the meat from turning brown and decaying right in front of you. The same thing happens in your body, because anti-oxidants neutralize free radicals, stopping oxidation.

You have a choice therefore, to either let free radicals run loose in your system and hope they don’t turn into inflammation and cancer. Or send in anti-oxidants to partner with the free radicals and return them to normalcy, thereby avoiding disease.

You should never use a food supplement to replace eating a wide variety of foods. But besides the foods listed here, you need a strong anti-oxidant supplement like Beta Carotene to avoid inflammation and cancer.

FIGHTING INFLAMMATION GENERALLY WITH BETA CAROTENE

In other blogs I will address specific inflammatory diseases, like cancer and Crohn’s. Here, I’m going to prescribe a minimum maintenance dose for preventing inflammation generally. Since cancer has become a child’s disease, I am including doses for children. Even a toddler has free radicals in her system.

NOTES

Maybe the Beta Carotene prescribed here sounds like a lot for a maintenance dose. As a reference, I take 50 twice daily for maintenance, more if I’m hurt—up to 200 softgels daily for several days after surgery, to stop pain and discomfort and speed healing. Since they’re  small, it takes only two or three swallows to get 50 down. And I have a zero tolerance approach to illness and pain. I don’t want it to be better; I want it to be gone.

Other vitamins like C and E are known to be good anti-oxidants, but they are not as effective as Beta Carotene. You can continue to take them, but to ensure against serious inflammation based diseases, use Beta Carotene.

Vitamin D is also being prescribed as an assist for Beta Carotene, which uses Vitamin D in its processes. If you can’t find D3 it’s okay to use plain Vitamin D.

Aloe Vera Gel is being prescribed specifically for your colon, because this is such an easy spot for cancer and other inflammations like Crohn’s disease to flourish. You know how soothing Aloe Vera feels on a cut, sunburn, or patch of irritated skin. It does the same thing in your intestines, soothes and cleanses. You will notice that after a few days taking the gel, your movements won’t smell as bad, nor will your various expulsions of air. Think of the colon as the body’s dumping ground, its garbage can. Extra care must be taken to keep the intestines clean and healthy.

If you take more Beta Carotene than your body can process you might get a mild, dull headache. It lasts as long as it takes your body to utilize the Beta Carotene, usually a couple hours. Some people get an itchy rash for a couple hours that can be relieved with Benadryl. There are no other side effects because Beta Carotene will not harm you. It will not turn your skin or the whites of your eyes orange, but if you take enough it will turn your feces that color.

If you take Beta Carotene without also taking Vitamin D, you will deplete your stores of Vitamin D and develop a Vitamin D deficiency. It usually manifests as sores on the inside of the mouth. Be sure to take Vitamin D every time you take Beta Carotene and there will be no problem.

Don’t use Mixed Carotenoids. They are a marketing gimmick and will not work the way I have described here. Only straight up Beta Carotene will work.
