THIS IS AN EASY WAY TO INCREASE ENERGY LEVELS

CATEGORY: 1: Simple Malnutrition

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENT: Vitamin B12

Fatigue is tricky. Like headaches, it accompanies almost every disorder known to humankind, and is a side effect of many drugs. It can also be a function of mood: If something bad happens to you, you can find yourself feeling tired for no reason except it. But fatigue can signal something serious, even life threatening—The National Institute of Health reports that “unusual fatigue” is the most commonly reported symptom in women who have heart attacks, with over 70 percent complaining of it beforehand.

Or it can simply be the result of a week of hardy partying and not getting enough sleep or nutrition. Or even the result of a hormone imbalance.

Physicians agree that for most people the main reason for lack of energy is the failure to get enough sleep on a regular basis. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported the results of a study showing that more than 25 percent of adults get six hours or less of sleep every night, which is unhealthy. One in ten reported not having a good night’s sleep in over a month. You can bet that these same people complain of fatigue and low energy.

Note: Please read Blog 1: Insomnia & Trouble Sleeping for information on using Sea Kelp as a safe and effective sleep aid.

Fatigue occurs across all age groups and cultures, but it is more prevalent in the elderly and those with serious disorders. Depending on the reason, it can be rare and something you just deal with on those occasions. It can be something connected to an event that happens regularly, but not daily. Or it can be daily, long term and debilitating, what is referred to as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

VITAMIN B12 THERAPY

Besides increasing energy levels and making you feel more alert, B12 is also important to proper nervous system function, sperm production, normal growth, and the proper functioning of the immune system. Important to this discussion is the fact that B12 is closely involved in the production of melatonin, which controls the release of many hormones that are involved in the sleep/wake cycle. If your problem is not diet, or lack of sleep, it may be hormonal, and B12 can still help you.

Vitamin B12 is a component of B Complex, and the only element that cannot be synthesized in a laboratory or extracted from plants. It is the only supplement that cannot be obtained from a variety of food sources. B12 must be grown in bacteria or molds like penicillin, and other than food supplements, is available only in red meat and dairy products. Strictly vegetarian diets therefore are deficient in B12.

But wait a minute, you say. Aren’t we being told to cut back on things like red meat and dairy to guard against high cholesterol? That’s right, and since we can only get B12 from these sources, if we cut back without supplementing, we risk a deficiency and subsequent fatigue, an immediate result of insufficient B12 intake.

The most common form of B12 supplementation is cyanocobalamin in tablet form. Since it’s all synthesized the same way, you can use almost any B12 product, except a time released or sustained release one. Because it’s water soluble, extensive amounts of B12 cannot be stored in your body, and 95 percent is washed out everyday. Meaning that you need to replenish the internal supply daily.

The energy you get from regular B12 use is wonderfully subtle, even, and mellow. You may not feel anything major when you start taking it. You will just suddenly notice that you have gotten so much more done over the past few days, way beyond your normal production level. Some people don’t notice the difference in their energy levels until they stop taking B12 and go back to their usual funk. Then the improvement is obvious to them.

THE OXYGEN CONNECTION

B12 is vital to red blood cell production. Red blood cells are responsible for the efficient transport of oxygen to all parts of your body. Oxygen is what enables your body to release and use energy stored in your food and later in your cells, and to use that energy to perform cellular functions, like making you feel energized. Every cell in your body needs oxygen for this reason.

Your blood stream picks up oxygen in your lungs as you breathe, and carries it to the rest of your body. B12 facilitates this task, getting more oxygen to your brain and your muscles, giving you an overall feeling of sustained energy without manic side effects. And you don’t crash when it wears off, because your body hasn’t been artificially stimulated. All you are doing, is getting more oxygen moving around in there by providing missing nutrition.

HOW TO USE VITAMIN B12

There are different ways to use B12 to combat fatigue and low energy:

1.         You can use it daily to ensure that your blood is always well oxygenated and therefore that your energy remains high and on an even keel. If you have reason to believe that your fatigue problems are hormonal, it is recommended that you take B12 daily.

2.         You can use it only on those days when your energy has dipped and you need a boost.

3.         You can use it to keep your mind and body energized and alert for a limited period, when you know there is no chance of your getting enough sleep to function normally.

4.         You can even use it, along with other supplements, to treat Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

1.         DAILY B12 THERAPY TO MAINTAIN SUSTAINED ENERGY LEVELS

Daily B12 Therapy QUICK GLANCE CHART
Supplements Breakfast Dinner Brand Strength
Vitamin B12 1-2 tablets 1-2 tablets Nature’s Life 1000 mcg
B Complex 100 (capsules only) 1 capsule 1 capsule Puritan’s Pride #10280 100 mg/mcg
Coenzyme Q10 (capsules only) 1 capsule Jarrow Formulas 30 mg
Do not use time released or sustained release B12 products.B Complex can be hard to digest and is best taken with some food.If you use this therapy daily you will not suffer dips in the middle of the day, nor will you be slow to get going in the morning. When the nurse sticks your finger in the pulse oximeter to measure your blood oxygen, your reading will be 99-100 every time.

2.         TAKING B12 ONLY WHEN YOUR ENERGY IS LOW

B12 Therapy As Needed QUICK GLANCE CHART
Supplement As Needed Brand Strength
Vitamin B12 2 tablets Nature’s Life 1000 mcg
Do not use time released or sustained release B12 products. If you use this therapy when your energy is low, you can feel its effects within 30 minutes to an hour. It will boost your vigor naturally without putting you on edge. And you won’t “crash” later when it wears off. You’ll just go back to “normal.”

3.         USING B12 TO STAY ALERT FOR A LIMITED BUT NECESSARY PERIOD

Let’s talk about this one for a minute. Sometimes you’re faced with a situation or task, like taking exams, caring for a sick child, or participating in military maneuvers, where you can be certain you won’t get enough sleep. There is a way around this problem, where you can function on three to four hours of sleep instead of eight, and remain fine mentally and physically, for a limited time.

But this isn’t a nice thing to do to your body or your brain, and it will catch up with you if you do it for too long. A couple weeks is fine, but you should not try to use this therapy on a long term basis, as a way of circumventing your need for at least eight hours of sleep each night. Without enough sleep your body can’t make all its necessary repairs, and detoxify. Plus, losing sleep ages you, makes you look older. You must get enough sleep on a regular basis to remain healthy in the long term.

Do not take it before you are actually ready to close your eyes and sleep. B12 will not adversely affect your sleep if you take it this way, but you will be bright and ready to go when you awaken the next day.

4.         ABOUT CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME

For a long time CFS has been the boogeyman of disorders. No one knows what is really going on, what causes it, or how to alleviate it. And it’s not serious enough to warrant research funds or real medical attention, so people suffer quietly. CFS is nothing more than a case of long term fatigue. But long term fatigue is no small matter and can be horrific and crippling. Nobody wants to feel tired all the time. Everything becomes a chore, even the things you love doing. You don’t want to go anywhere, see anybody, do anything. Even your mind is sluggish and nowhere near performing up to your true abilities. It’s easy to understand how CFS can morph into depression.

You have CFS if you are (a) tired all the time, (b) it is not alleviated no matter how much you sleep, and (c) it is not attributable to any other medical or psychological cause. So you’re tired and there’s no reason for it. Great.

There is a cognitive analytical construct for arriving at answers to mysteries, a way of proving or disproving a concept, that is referred to as Reductio ad Absurdum, where you figure out what something is by figuring out what it is not. In other words, you continue to eliminate, one by one, the reasons that can’t be true, and what is left you know must be the answer, no matter how absurd it is. Reduce a question or problem, even to the absurd, and you will have your answer. Reductio ad Absurdum.

When you use this concept to analyze CFS, you must eliminate first the question of sleep, because CFS is not improved no matter how much you sleep. You must eliminate any medical or mental problem as a reason, because that is part of the diagnosis. The only thing left then, which must be the answer no matter how absurd it may seem, is nutrition. And the one thing I hope you’re learning from reading my blogs is that nutrition is the answer to all illnesses. Even if your problem is hormonal, that too relates to diet in this instance, because B12 helps regulate your wake/sleep cycle, ensuring that you get enough sleep even as it gives you more energy.

Under this analysis, B12, along with other support vitamins, should help even those with CFS.

It’s not for everyone. The liquid aminos will also help relieve fatigue.Iron should be taken only by women who are menstrual age.

Notes

A small percentage of people find that B12 doesn’t energize them, but instead makes them sleepy, or just doesn’t work at all to relieve fatigue. This could be caused by not taking it along with B Complex to help it be properly assimilated. It may also indicate that your digestive system does not produce one of the gastric secretions necessary to absorb B12 when taken orally. If so, you can use the sublingual form which is dissolved under your tongue and absorbed directly into your bloodstream, bypassing the intestinal tract. You can also get B12 shots from your physician.

I have discouraged you from purchasing time released or sustained release B12 products. You need to get the sudden frontload of B12 into your system fast to achieve the effects I discuss here. Having B12 drip slowly into your system is the worst thing you can do regarding the use of B12. If you have a problem with B12 taken orally not working properly for you, follow the above note and take it sublingually.

Avoid very large doses of sublingual B12. Get the 1000 or 2000 mcg strength only. You have to be careful to avoid causing a deficiency of other elements of the B Complex, which could happen with those ultra large strengths.

THERE’S AN EASY, NATURAL WAY TO BE REGULAR

CATEGORY: 1: Simple Malnutrition

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENT: Magnesium Oxide

Fit, young woman holding a heart made out of vegetables

This isn’t a pleasant imagery topic, I know, sorry, but it’s a vital one for good health. So we have to talk about elimination. Do you have any idea what you risk by being chronically constipated? To stop constipation you have to focus on how to regulate the amount of water removed from the digesting food in the large intestine. Feces can get so dry, hard, and impacted from lack of water that a medical intern has to dig them out with a special instrument. Or they can become liquid from too much water, which can lead to prolonged, life threatening nutrient loss from diarrhea. Properly regulate the water extraction process, and you have no more constipation. Or diarrhea.

Note: The difference between the small intestine and the large intestine:Small Intestine: It is located above the large intestine, directly below the stomach, and is sometimes referred to as the upper intestine. It has a smaller width canal, but is much longer than the large intestine. It acts like a chemistry set, breaking down food and absorbing carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and other food nutrients. Once these nutrients are removed from the food, the digesting material enters the large intestine, also known as the colon, the final stop in the digestive system.Large Intestine: This is the colon. It is sometimes referred to as the lower intestine. It is crucial to the absorption of nutrients and salts that have passed through the small intestine without being properly processed. It is where excess water is removed, and the remaining material consolidated into feces and eliminated. This is also where constipation and diarrhea originate.

THE POOP SCOOP

We all know what constipation is. It’s the inability to move one’s bowels, or to do so with great difficulty. But did you know you’re considered  to be constipated if you eliminate only once a day on a regular basis—unless you pass a whole lot that one time? It’s also constipation, to a lesser degree, if your feces aren’t soft enough to break apart when they hit the water or when the toilet’s flushed; or if they don’t float.

Constipation occurs when not enough water is retained in the large intestine during digestion, which lets the digesting food wastes become too dry and hard to move easily through the canal. A primary responsibility of the large intestine is to regulate water extraction from digesting food.

Too much water extraction, the material dries out and you’re constipated. Too little, the material gets too wet and you have the opposite condition of diarrhea. You know how you add water to dehydrated foods and the water miraculously plumps them back up? Constipation is dehydrated poop. Add more water to the fecal mixture and you end constipation.

Your body is like a mini factory. Goods go in the front door, get used, and then the waste is removed from the factory and hauled away. Imagine the problems if the wastes stopped being removed from the building, even as more goods kept coming in the front door. Operations would back up the same way they do in your body when you continue to eat meal after meal, without properly eliminating in a timely fashion the wastes from prior food you ate.

THE DIET CONNECTION

Unless you are facing special circumstances like a regimen of taking a drug that binds you, or having some awful surgery, any constipation you suffer will be diet related. Simply put, if you’re constipated, you’re eating too much cooked and refined food. Ask yourself, how much fresh food do you eat everyday? What percentage of your food intake is fresh as opposed to cooked? You would hope for at least a 50/50 ratio. But even a 30 percent ratio of fresh foods to 70 percent cooked will probably solve most constipation problems. Unfortunately, too many people eat more like a 5 percent fresh diet ratio to a 95 percent cooked. They may actually go for days or weeks without eating something fresh.

Definition: Fresh: This means raw and uncooked. And no canned or frozen, either. You can still eat cooked, canned, and frozen product, but you just can’t count it toward your daily “fresh” intake.

Cooking destroys essential enzymes necessary for proper breakdown of food in the intestines. It also robs the digesting food of its natural moisture, which burns off in steam. Raw foods contain roughage and a lot of water, which together assist the entire digestive process. The roughage scrubs and cleans the canal walls as it passes through the intestines, and the water keeps the fecal material moist enough to keep moving along.

If all your food is cooked there is less water in the material by the time it reaches your colon, and it is therefore much harder to move out. Your colon can’t create water for food that has none. It can only regulate the “extraction” of water from the material you provide. It’s not enough to just drink a lot of water, although that’s a good thing to do. You still have to eat foods with water in them, wet, crispy, or juicy, fresh fruits and vegetables.

UNFORTUNATELY, YOUR BUTT IS A GARBAGE CAN

That’s right, and anything left up there that you don’t properly eliminate, well, you haul that stuff around with you, mucking up your insides.

Your colon is your body’s garbage can, literally and figuratively. It is where the left over wastes your body can’t use are formatted and moved into the beginning of the elimination cycle. And also where actual elimination  takes place. All the nutrients have been removed from your food, and what is left is useless to your body and presents a danger if it’s not promptly expelled.

Suppose you lived in a household without an in-sink garbage disposal, and had to throw away all of your organic wastes in a standard garbage can. Suppose further that you failed to regularly clean out all the garbage from the can, leaving some behind to rot each time. You can imagine the slimy, festering, bacteria-supporting mess that would form there over time. With that visual in mind, it’s also easy to see that there is a causal link between chronic, long term constipation and colon cancer. The longer waste matter stays in you, the worse it is for your colon and your entire body. And the faster it moves through you, the better.

Just like in the garbage can, your intestines—if not cleaned properly by regular elimination—will retain rotting wastes that lead to free radical growth. Think about it. By the time food gets to the end of the colon, it is already decaying and full of free radicals that cause inflammation. Once inflammation is present, other dastardly disorders can occur, like colon cancer and Crohn’s Disease, both of which stem from nothing more than chronic inflammations.

I worked with a woman in New York City, a bookkeeper, who never smiled. I don’t know how the conversation came up, but she said she only moved her bowels once a week. I replied, “No wonder you’re always in a bad mood.” All that impacted decay would put anyone off their game. When you have a good elimination, endorphins are released in your brain as a reward, having an analgesic (painkilling) effect, and making you feel good for up to an hour afterward.

HOW REGULAR IS REGULAR?

There is a belief among alternative health practitioners that you should have an elimination after every meal. In cultures where they eat a largely raw, uncooked diet, they have three to five eliminations daily. Your goal should be to have a minimum of two movements daily. The more the better, as long as it isn’t diarrhea. When you get really regular and are having a couple of movements daily, the food will move through your system so fast that you will still be able to smell what you’ve eaten in it.

FOOD TIPS TO AVOID CONSTIPATION

In addition to adding Magnesium Oxide and the other suggested supplements to your diet, the following food tips will help you avoid constipation.

1.         Always eat something fresh when you eat something cooked. For instance, if you have scrambled eggs and toast for breakfast, add half a grapefruit, orange slices, or fresh squeezed orange juice. If you have a burger for lunch, make sure you top it with lettuce and tomato—and eat the parsley garnish. If you have eggplant parmesan for dinner, make sure there is a green salad to accompany it.

2.         Make the following fresh foods a regular part of your daily diet:

            a.         Papaya (This is the constipation killer.)

            b.         Apple

            c.         Pear

            d.         Salad vegetables

            e.         Carrot juice

3.         Once or twice a week try to eat any kind of cooked dried bean or pea, as a soup or side dish. It can be black beans, kidney beans, or navy, green or yellow split peas, black-eyed peas, green, red or yellow lentils, pinto, chickpeas, etc. (Don’t forget an accompanying dish of fresh food.)

4.         Drink more water. Try substituting it instead of grabbing a soda.

THE MAGNESIUM OXIDE THERAPY

Magnesium Oxide causes more water to be retained in the digesting material as it passes through your lower intestine, keeping it soft enough to move easily through the colon and exit your body in a timely manner. The more MO you take the looser will be your fecal matter. It can turn it completely liquid if you take enough. It won’t be true diarrhea in that you won’t go more often and won’t pass any more material. It’s just that what you do pass will be liquid. MO wears off each day, so you can change the dosage the next day and everything will be fine. You may have to play around with the dosage to see what suits you best.

But regardless of the reason for the constipation, and even if it’s chronic, Magnesium Oxide will bring you nearly immediate relief, certainly within 12 to 24 hours. It may be used for occasional bouts of constipation or taken daily to ensure regularity. It is perfectly safe and can be taken during pregnancy and when nursing. Taken as directed below Magnesium Oxide stops constipation naturally.

If you take Magnesium Oxide every day, you have to take a few other supplements to balance things out. Calcium assists the MO in its internal functions; Vitamin D3 supports the Calcium; and Aloe Vera Gel is a great colon cleanser and soother.

Constipation QUICK GLANCE CHART
Supplements Breakfast Dinner Brand Strength
Magnesium Oxide 1-2 tablets (or more as needed) 1-2 tablets (or more as needed) Puritan’s Pride #5535 500 mg
Calcium/ Magnesium Combo 2 tablets 2 tablets Puritan’s Pride #4082 500 mg/    250 mg

Aloe Vera Gel (softgels only) 2 softgels  2 softgels Puritan’s Pride #2682 200:1 extract (equivalent to 1 teaspoon)
The above is designed to be taken every day to maintain regularity, so that you never have to deal with constipation. But if constipation is only occasionally a problem you can take Magnesium Oxide alone, as and when you need it. If you get up one morning and discover there’s a problem, take 2 to 3 tablets of MO with juice or milk. You should get relief in a couple of hours.

ANIMALS GET CANCER FOR THE SAME REASONS PEOPLE DO AND IN THE SAME WAY

CATEGORIES: 2: Inflammation, 3: Blockage, 11: Pet Health

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENTS: Beta Carotene, Lecithin

(I purposely misspell antioxidant to make a point.)

nPlD1q

The same stressors that cause cancer in people also cause cancer in cats and dogs; or rabbits and mice for that matter. Cancer is the leading cause of death in cats, and after euthanasia the number one killer of dogs as well. Any multi-cellular creature that tries to exist in our oxygen rich environment, from ant to acrocanthosaurus, is subject to constant cellular bombardment and degeneration from free radical formation. Degeneration that is the road to cancer.

Formula: Cancer: I understand cancer, know how to prevent it, how to stop it once it’s started, even how to grab the coat tails of someone who’s been sent home to die with it, and give them back their years. From my experience I see cancer as a mathematical equation that looks something like the following, elegant and predictable:

 (C = FR > X + (O + I).)

Where cancer equals Free Radical growth greater than X, with X representing a tolerance level that varies depending on other individual factors, plus subsequent Oxidation (cell decay), and Inflammation.

Cells are damaged and free radicals created in your pet’s body by many stressors: (a) naturally, of course, as a result of simple metabolism, but also from (b) irritation, like a too tight collar or harness that frays the coat and leaves under-skin red and tender, (c) injury, like getting a paw run over by a full shopping cart in the parking lot, causing tenderness, (d) infection, like that from stepping on a nail or eating an infected rodent, (e) toxins, like radiation or cigarette smoke, (f) poor diet, that has a lower level of anti-oxidants than the amount of free radicals created, and (g) other stressors specific to an individual animal.

HOW A PET’S CELLS ARE DAMAGED AND CONVERTED TO FREE RADICALS

Your pet’s body is comprised of cells. Inside a cell, each electron has to have a partner electron in order for the cell to remain stable and healthy—and non cancerous. In other words, the two electrons have to remain together inside the cell or there will be trouble. Trouble comes when something happens to damage the bond between the partnered electrons in a healthy cell. If they become separated, or one of them is destroyed, the single electron left behind becomes a free radical, unstable and dangerous.

The single electron, who is now a free radical, goes berserk when it finds itself suddenly alone, without its partner electron. (How would you feel if someone took your spouse or partner away?) It turns and immediately attacks a nearby healthy cell that has both electrons. It desperately tries to break them apart, so it can steal one electron and become stable and healthy again itself. If it is successful it once again becomes stable with its stolen electron, but the cell it disrupted and stole from becomes a free radical itself and continues the angry process. A cascade effect leads to severe cellular damage and mutations like cancer.

As an analogy, think of the bonded electrons in a healthy cell as a married couple in a social system where being single is prohibited. In this system, two people (electrons) who are part of a marriage are stable, acceptable. No problem. Live long and prosper. But a single person (electron) without a partner is a free radical who can only prosper by breaking up another married pair. Like someone who breaks up a marriage and runs off with one of the partners, free radicals seek to destroy other nearby stable cellular relationships for their own benefit, so they can survive. A free radical is an electron fighting for its life.

Although free radicals are a natural part of living, like the home wrecker, when too many of them build up due to the factors listed above, you have oxidation and inflammation. Any area of the body can take a certain amount of free radical growth in their neighborhoods and be fine. It’s when too many free radicals show up that the problems begin. Think of your own house or apartment. If you were having a party and planned on 15 guests, how chaotic would it be if 1500 people showed up?

WHEN TOO MANY FREE RADICALS ARE CREATED YOU HAVE OXIDATION

Oxidation is predicated on reaching a threshold level of free radicals that overwhelms the body. The simplest way of thinking about oxidation is that it is spoilage, aging, decay, and eventual cell death. You know what happens to an avocado slice left out in the “open air.” The exposed flesh turns brown from contact with oxygen. It oxidizes, spoils, due to an excess of free radicals. The same thing happens inside your body. After a while the avocado will begin to brown and rot, and you won’t eat it. That’s a good instinct, because you would be literally eating free radicals! That’s why you should never eat salad that has browned, or other food that is obviously past its prime, unless you absolutely have to. Broadly speaking, living on Earth is being left out in the “open air” and that’s why aging is another form of oxidation caused by free radicals.

maxresdefault

HOW ANTI-OXIDANTS NEUTRALIZE FREE RADICALS AND PREVENT INFLAMMATION AND CANCER

Anti-oxidants protect your pet’s body from free radical damage because they have a unique characteristic. Anti-oxidants neutralize free radicals by donating one of their own electrons to the free radical, helping it to become partnered and healthy again. It’s as if the anti-oxidant marries the free radical and thereby calms it down.

An anti-oxidant cell also has two partnered electrons, but wonderfully, anti-oxidants are stable in either form, as a single electron or a married pair. Unlike the partnered electrons in a healthy cell that become free radicals when separated, anti-oxidants give up one of their electrons without becoming a free radical.

Anti-oxidants stop the problem at its source. When an anti-oxidant cell encounters a free radical it ends the electron-stealing chain reaction by freely donating one of its electrons, turning the free radical back into a healthy cell. Like evil Mr. Hyde drinking an antidote and turning back into the good Dr. Jekyll.

As an animal’s guardian, you have a choice to either let free radicals run loose in your pet’s system, and hope they don’t turn into cancer, and subject it to surgery if they do. Or you can send in anti-oxidants to partner with the free radicals and return them to normalcy, thereby avoiding disease without stressing the animal.

The first thing a sous chef does after cutting avocado slices, and before serving them with your grilled chicken sandwich, is to sprinkle on some lemon or lime juice. She does this because the anti-oxidants in the citrus keep the flesh from turning brown and decaying right in front of you. The same thing can happen in your pet’s body, because anti-oxidants neutralize free radicals. Your pets need Beta Carotene in supplement form to avoid cancer. If you have an outdoor cat who regularly hunts and eats its kills there is a greater risk of free radicals.

Make sure you feed your pet with a quality pet food. Read the labels of the pet food you purchase. If it’s made out of animal by products instead of real meat, with strange sounding additives that have no food value, or doesn’t have added supplements, you’re putting your pet at risk. Poor quality food won’t give your animal companion any more protection against cancer than it does you. Your animals need enough anti-oxidants to fight the free radical production that comes from a natural part of living. It is the lack of anti-oxidants that causes your cats and dogs to get cancer.

SAMIRA THE CALICO

Samira has the softest white coat you’ve ever touched, with random sized patches of black and rust, especially on her tail. She is both dainty and thug like. Will sit primly in your lap purring and accepting caresses until you think you’ve lost the use of both legs to circulation failure. And then suddenly lean over and bite her housemate, Trill, sleeping nearby. Or bound across the room in two leaps to attack, Phoebe, her other housemate. She also has daily skirmishes with an imaginary enemy that no one but she can see. She gets in such a frenzy chasing and running from this specter that I have photos of her twisting manically five feet in the air. She might suddenly decide that Trill needs grooming. And she can be a very aggressive groomer, sometimes using her tongue like a slap upside the head.

Sami is also a cancer survivor, but only because she underwent the terrifying ordeal of surgery to remove a tumor on her leg. Sami had a rough start in life, and the stress from the various elements of that ordeal are what caused her to get excess free radicals, which escalated into inflammation and cancer. I was around Sami while she had her surgery, and saw firsthand how unhappy it made her and her guardians. By supplementing your pets’ diets with Beta Carotene you can all avoid the cancer trauma.

The following was written by David Rubincam, who saved Samira’s life. It is excerpted from a longer version that first appeared in the online newsletter of Vashon Island Pet Protectors, a no kill nonprofit. For a photo of Samira visit vipp.org. Click “Adopt” and “Paw Print Stories.”

SAMIRA’S LONG JOURNEY TO THE UNITED STATES

I worked as the Legal Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2008. Nothing in the U.S. can prepare you for the harsh and inhospitable landscape in Saudi Arabia, which has the world’s largest desert, Rub al-Khali, and the dubious distinction of being a country with no permanent rivers or bodies of water. Yet even in the most unforgiving places, you can discover miracles that result from the actions of many good people. One of those miracles was Samira, whose name means “delightful companion,” in Arabic. I chose that name because it perfectly describes her, a small, mostly white Calico.

Unlike Americans, Saudis generally don’t keep pets. The cats you do see are usually street strays with a projected life span of four miserable years in the hostile, arid climate. Kittens usually die in their first week.

I spent time in a remote desert area at a security airbase protected by the Saudi Royal Guard and the U.S. Air Force. Just outside the entrance to the base, Samira gave birth to a litter of four kittens. By the time she was discovered, two of the kittens were dead. Knowing that the Americans had an Army vet assigned to the base, the Royal Guard kindly turned over the severely dehydrated and starving animals. The vet returned them to good health and placed the kittens in good homes.

But what to do about Sami? When it came to adoption, she had more than the harsh environment and the streets working against her. She had also apparently suffered blunt force trauma to the left side of her face, the kind that might result from hitting a wall or falling from a high distance, and possibly a stroke, which led to some paralysis and loss of feeling. She lost control over her left eye, which she can’t completely close or blink, and the left side of her mouth which lets a tooth protrude. Even her whiskers on the left are not as long or as full as the ones on the right side.

For nine months people came and stared at Sami, who is a truly beautiful cat, but saw only her handicaps and left without taking her. It didn’t help matters that she wouldn’t let anyone touch or pick her up. You risked getting scratched if you tried—if you could even get your hands on her; she was that fast. Still, the vet wouldn’t give up and kept looking for a home.

I happened across a photo of Sami on the clinic’s website, and was immediately smitten. I told myself it was okay to just look. I couldn’t easily adopt a cat, given my constraints. I thought it would be impossible to transport her back to Vashon at the end of my assignment. When I got to the clinic there were workers waiting in bemusement to see what would happen when I tried to pick her up. They warned me off, so I sat in a chair in front of her kennel, and didn’t approach her. She came out, sauntered directly over to me, hopped up on my lap, curled in my arms and purred. She stretched up and licked my face with a look in her eyes that said, “What took you so long?”

Everyone in the room realized immediately that I had just been adopted. Now I had to worry about the logistics of getting my new girl home. I made arrangements to pick her up the next day—which would also give me time to see what, if any, cat supplies I could find in Riyadh! When I returned, inside waiting to greet me and offer congratulations was the Air Base Commanding General, who it turns out is a “cat person” too. There were about 15 U.S. security personnel who had helped care for Sami over the past nine months, and had come to say goodbye. Most surprising was seeing that the Royal Guards who first found Sami had come to say goodbye as well. Despite her feisty nature she was a sweet presence and would be sorely missed by all.

It took two months to complete all the paperwork necessary to bring Samira home to Vashon Island, in Puget Sound. She needed an Export Permit from the Saudi Ministry of Agriculture, a European Union health certificate to land in France, and a U.S.D.A. Health Certificate to land and disembark at Sea-Tac. These documents were her “pet passport.” In the end, Samira came home in style, riding all the way to Seattle in the cabin with me.

The day we left, Samira was too sleepy to notice due to a sedative the vet gave her; something I was soon to regret. The first leg was from Riyadh to Paris. About half way through the seven-hour flight, Sami began to cry, scratch and bite at the webbed sides of the carrier. The sedative that worked according to prescription at ground level was suddenly affecting her like PCP, and she was freaking out. Fortunately, most of the airline crew were either “cat people,” or had seen this happen before. They let me take Sami into the crew’s lounge. After two hours the sedative wore off. Sami calmed down finally, genuinely exhausted from the ordeal. The Air France crew was incredibly supportive. They each came to see how she was doing, and brought her breakfast. To my surprise, even the airport veterinarian stopped by.

Sami is now at our home on Vashon, and has learned to trust my wife, Uwanna, and get along with at least Trill, one of our other two cats. We have to keep her separated from the baby, Phoebe. I believe the lesson of Samira’s story is that it took caring and charitable actions by a lot of people from a number of countries, backgrounds, and religions to save her and bring her here, to a loving home with acres of fenced property, where she is discovering the color green, cold weather, and yes—rain—for the first time. When it rains, and since this is Seattle that means all the time, she can’t wait to get outside and play in it. It fascinates her!

Epilogue: Sami is healthy and cancer free, still a little crazy, and living in Moscow with her guardians and housemate cats. She’s quite the international gadabout.

Beta Carotene will neutralize free radicals in your pet’s system, but it needs the help of Vitamin D3, which assists Beta Carotene in its free radical fighting functions; and Lecithin, which will break up blockages and cellular wastes generated by free radicals.

NOTES

► If Beta Carotene is taken without also taking Vitamin D, it will deplete the stores of Vitamin D and a Vitamin D deficiency may develop. As a rule, Beta Carotene and Vitamin D should always be taken together.

► I have recommended Puritan’s Pride brand because their Lecithin is from soybeans only, and contains a minimum of 70 mg of phosphatides in each 1200 mg softgel, equivalent to 61 percent phosphatides. The value of a Lecithin product is determined by the percentage of phosphatides it contains, because they activate the emulsifying process in mammals. You may use another brand, but make sure it conforms to or exceeds these specifications or it will not work.

THIS WILL WORK FOR ALL ALLERGIES AND SHOULD BE TAKEN REGULARLY, YEAR ROUND, EVEN WHEN YOU’RE HAVING NO SYMPTOMS

CATEGORY: 4: Auto Immune Type

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENTS: Monavie Active or Supplement Therapy

Definition: Allergen: This is any normally harmless substance that causes an allergic reaction in someone. Others may suffer from the same allergen as you, or it may affect only you. The root cause is the same however, a malfunctioning immune system.

Allergies_anxiety_blog_large

This is the season of misery for many allergy sufferers, whose allergen is pollen that causes hay fever. But all sorts of allergens negatively impact people’s health and happiness year round. The list of them is growing in step with our hyper sensitivity to more and more normally harmless things around us. It’s as if we were becoming allergic to the very environment itself. And when you examine the expanding list of allergens, it actually seems as though that’s the case.

ALLERGY OVERVIEW

Allergies arise from two causes: Genetics, what you inherit from your family; and Environment, what you come into contact with as you live your life.

The genetic factor: It is believed that while specific allergies are not usually inherited, if both parents have allergies their children will probably have them too, just different ones. The probability of allergies in the offspring increases if it’s the mother who has the problem. Meaning, you won’t necessarily inherit the same allergies as your parents, just the propensity to develop allergies generally. This is true because an impaired immune system is subject to many different allergies, as well as, other disorders.

This ties into what I’ve been saying about seemingly inherited disorders actually being a function of a poor diet that’s simply passed on to succeeding generations, along with the attendant deficiencies. And it’s worse if Mom has the allergy only because it’s usually she who makes the choices about food purchases and preparation. So if Mom’s family diet is giving her allergies, it will probably give them to you as well if you’re eating her cooking. Because Mom’s family diet is missing a nutrient necessary to avoid allergies. You don’t inherit bad genes, just bad eating habits.

The environmental factor: The short list of normally innocuous allergens now includes the more common ones like grass, weed, tree, and flower pollen; but also mold fungi, house dust and bacterial dust mites; pet dander, especially from cats, dogs, and birds; insect bites from bees and wasps, as well as simply living in close proximity to other insects like cockroaches; lotions and soaps; make-up and every cosmetic and perfume; plants including poison ivy, poison oak, and sumac; jewelry and latex; medicines like penicillin and antibiotics; and even sunlight.

Some of the more serious allergens are food based ones like peanut, shell fish and wheat—not to be confused with celiac disease that causes a sensitivity to the gluten found in wheat. There have even been rare cases of one person being allergic to another, where the body actually perceives the other person as an allergen.

ALLERGIES ARISE FROM THE OVERREACTIONS OF A NERVOUS AND HYPER SENSITIVE IMMUNE SYSTEM

The increased sensitivity to these normally harmless substances is occurring because our immune systems are underfed, and made weak by this lack of nutrition. We then pass on the poor diet habits and immune weakness to our progeny, making them more susceptible to immune related problems, like allergies. Despite the long, varied, and growing list of allergens, all allergies are truly caused by an overly sensitive immune system. It reacts when it’s not supposed to. That’s why I categorize allergies as Auto Immune Type. Though they are not strictly considered an auto immune disorder, they do result from an inappropriate response from the immune system. If you can stop the inappropriate response, you can stop allergies.

The immune system can be compared to two personality types in humans. There is a type of person who remains calm under pressure, who never raises his voice, who varies his methods as necessary to deal with new crises without getting flustered. He would never lose his cool and do something inappropriate. Let’s call him Andy. We all know someone like this and admire that grace under pressure they possess.

But there is another type of person who gets upset at the slightest thing, who has trouble sleeping, who jumps at every noise, and is always over anxious. Anything can set him off, and he’s known to cry at the slightest frustration or bad news. Let’s call him Bob. We also all know someone like this and usually can’t wait to get away from them, because their anxiety can be draining.

These two personality types can also describe two types of immune systems. Andy represents a stable, healthy one that doesn’t mistake harmless substances as potentially dangerous allergens. When Andy kicks in it is to respond to a real emergency. Bob represents a hyper sensitive immune system that has a hair trigger, and will send out t-cells and antihistamines, to cause inflammation at the slightest disturbance. Bob’s hand is always hovering over the red “go” button.

Ordinarily, it’s the immune system’s job to protect your body against truly harmful substances, like viruses, pollution, bacteria and subsequent infection. Unfortunately, an over anxious immune system like Bob will wrongly react to benign substances and treat them like allergens. When this happens, Bob goes into full lock down and sends out all the troops to fight . . . what? An imaginary foe, a ghost, a daydream, something that isn’t really there. At that point, the system has become disabled, has lost the ability to tell friend from foe. In so doing, it makes you suffer needlessly. And the restrictions that allergies place on you! You can’t eat this, you can’t drink that, can’t smell this, can’t touch whatever, can’t go to that place! But if you feed the immune system it can and will recover.

People who suffer from allergies can choose from a large menu of miseries, including:

headache

swollen, red, itchy, watery eyes

serial sneezing

runny or stuffy nose

post nasal drip

itchy skin around nose and mouth

itchiness inside ear canal

ringing or buzzing in the ears

inner ear swelling leading to dizziness and vertigo

mental confusion

throat tickling

coughing

sore throat

asthma attack

respiratory swelling that narrows airways and threatens breathing

extra mucous production

lung congestion

wheezing

itchy skin on body

eczema (rough, inflamed, blistered and sometimes bleeding skin)

hives

skin rashes

blisters

skin peeling

stomach cramps

nausea

bloating

abdominal cramps

diarrhea

vomiting

plus others specific to an individual

It is the level of the immune reaction to an allergen that determines whether you have an allergic response that passes quickly or one that threatens your life. A mild attack of any of these symptoms would be annoying, but something you could forget about once it was over. Bump these same symptoms up from mild to moderate and you might be more concerned and looking for some over the counter relief.

But if some of them rise to severe they can threaten your life. This situation is referred to as anaphylaxis, a condition where the immune system’s response to an allergen is violent and immediate, affecting the entire body. If the symptom involves swelling of the respiratory track it can prevent breathing. In that case, if you don’t get a shot of epinephrine (adrenaline) immediately, you may die from lack of oxygen. There are a lot of good reasons to try to prevent allergies.

WHAT HAPPENS INSIDE TO CAUSE AN ALLERGIC REACTION

Let’s say that you’re taking a walk through a flower garden one morning, when suddenly the back of your throat begins to itch and tighten up, making you cough. At the same time your eyes start to itch and your nose begins discharging mucus. Your hyper sensitive immune system, Bob, has overreacted to a harmless substance, flower pollen, interpreting it as an enemy element. In response, and wrongly thinking it is under attack, the immune system activates and releases defense troops by way of white blood cells, resulting in an extreme inflammatory response.

Part of this inflammatory response includes producing unnecessary antibodies to ward off the imaginary enemy allergen. In turn, the antibodies cause chemicals—histamines—to be released into the bloodstream. The histamines are what actually cause the symptomatic itching, sneezing, swelling of affected tissues, and other symptoms that characterizes an inflammatory allergic response.

THE CORRECT THERAPY CAN STOP AND CONTROL ALL ALLERGIES

The therapies discussed here will calm down an over anxious immune system, and stop Bob from reacting to inherently harmless things that will not hurt you, like pollen, house dust, shellfish, or latex. It will also stop and control for all time any allergy your body can dream up.

USING MONAVIE ACTIVE

You can drink Monavie Active twice daily and do nothing else, and your allergies will end. Doing this will cost about $100 a month. A lot of us can’t afford that amount in this economy. If so, you can take a less expensive combination of supplements to control your allergies. The supplement therapy follows the Monavie chart.

Fighting Allergies Using Monavie Active Quick Glance Chart
Supplement Breakfast Dinner Brand Strength
Monavie Active 2 ounces 2 ounces Monavie Active NA
Monavie is dense and delicious, a combination of 19 fruit juices with acai berry as its main component. It appears to have silt and sediment in it. Make sure you shake it well, but do not discard anything that comes out of the bottle. Consume everything, tiny chunks, silt, etc. Try to take it first thing in the morning when you wake up, and about 20 minutes before you eat dinner. Some people prefer to take the second dose right before they go to bed, saying it also helps them sleep better. Whatever else it does, nothing works better on immune problems than Monavie Active.

USING FOOD SUPPLEMENTS

The supplement therapy centers on Bee Pollen. Think of it as the immune system’s favorite solid food. It loves Bee Pollen, can’t get enough, and will return to good health if it is fed sufficient quantities of it. Regardless of your trigger allergen—the substance or thing that causes your particular allergy response—Bee Pollen will treat the root problem in the immune system and calm it down, stop it from over reacting to nothing.

It sounds counterintuitive, I know. You’re thinking that if pollen is your trigger allergen, how can taking more bee pollen help the situation. For one thing, bees secrete a substance on the pollen they collect, making it sticky to ensure they won’t drop it on their way back to the hive. Plus, the pollen that bees collect is from many varied flowers and plants. So Bee Pollen in supplement form is not strictly the same pollen you encounter on your walk among the flowers. Whatever that substance is that’s added by the bees helps us control allergies.

Inflammation is also part of an allergic reaction, which is why Beta Carotene is recommended. (Please see Blog 3: The Danger of Inflammation for more on this subject.) Vitamin D3 supports Beta Carotene in its inflammation fighting function. And Lecithin is recommended to clear up lung congestion and the extra mucous production that often accompanies an allergic response.

Once your allergy is under control, meaning you have been symptom free for at least two weeks, you can stop everything except Bee Pollen. But if you’re not taking Monavie Active, then Bee Pollen must be your minimum front line of defense against allergies, if you want to prevent them without prescriptions. Take Bee Pollen daily, and you’ll forget that you even have allergies. But the minute you stop taking Bee Pollen, or Monavie Active if you decide on it, your allergy will return with full effects.

NOTES

► It is important to make either Monavie Active or Bee Pollen a daily and regular part of your diet, even when you are not having allergy symptoms, or when it isn’t your “season” for allergies. The idea is to move the immune system into a state of calm and keep it there. It will be a stronger immune system and will do a better job of protecting your body against all sorts of ailments, including allergies.

► If you take Beta Carotene without also taking Vitamin D, you will deplete your stores of Vitamin D and develop a Vitamin D deficiency. It usually manifests as sores on the inside of the mouth. Always take Vitamin D when you take Beta Carotene.

Vitamin D3 is recommended because it more closely replicates the Vitamin D made naturally on your skin from contact with the sun. But if you can’t find D3, take straight Vitamin D.

► I have recommended Puritan’s Pride brand because their Lecithin is from soybeans only, and contains a minimum of 70 mg of phosphatides in each 1200 mg softgel, equivalent to 61 percent phosphatides. The value of a Lecithin product is determined by the percentage of phosphatides it contains, because they activate the emulsifying process in your body. You may use another brand, but make sure it conforms to or exceeds these specifications or it will not work.

YOU DON’T NEED VIAGRA OR CIALIS TO BE READY ANYTIME

CATEGORY: 3: Blockage

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENT: Lecithin

close up of linked hands of couple

One caveat with this blog is that the therapy will work if the problems are indeed physical, and caused by a slowdown of blood flow to the penis. It won’t work if the problems are psychological, in your head—like maybe you don’t like your partner so much anymore, or you lost a bundle in a bad investment and aren’t feeling very sexy at this time.

On the other hand, if you have trouble performing when you really want to, that can mess with your mind and cause its own set of psychological problems, even though the cause is truly physical. For that reason, let’s start by assuming the problem is physical for now, and that Lecithin can help you. A few men will notice improvement the same day they start Lecithin therapy. Some within 72 hours of regular use. For others it could take as much as 21 to 30 days of regular use. But it will work. If it’s physical, and there isn’t some other profound medical problem going on.

The most common reason for an inability to achieve and hold on to an erection is a blockage in the blood vessels inside the penis. An erection is all about blood flow—into, and out of, the penis. The more blood flowing into the penis the more rigid will be the erection. The more constricted the blood flow, the limper will be the penis. If not enough blood gets into the penis in time, or if too much blood flows out of it too soon, full erection is not possible to achieve or maintain.

All that the common medications do is cause more blood to flow into the penis and to be held there. Sometimes for too long past arousal, and hence the four hour erection warning. But Lecithin can do this naturally, so you don’t have to worry about drug side effects or being ready at the right moment. You will be ready whenever you want to be. You may even experience spontaneous erections for no reason as men do when they’re fairly young.

Tip: Penis Size: Men make a big deal about penis size. There are all sorts of tongue-in-cheek references in movies, TV, and books, to the point that the “size matters” allusion has entered the popular lexicon. I have news for guys. Even though orgasm and ejaculation are possible without a full erection, all the women I’ve ever talked to care less about size and more about the erection. To most women, the strength of the erection is far more important than the size of the penis. If it’s small but hard, you can make your partner happy. If it’s large but limp, they won’t be nearly as impressed. Size doesn’t matter, but hardness does.

WHAT HAPPENS INSIDE YOUR BODY TO CAUSE AN ERECTION

When you are sexually stimulated, physically or psychologically, the brain sends messages to your penis that relax the smooth muscles in and around the blood vessel walls of the corpus cavernosum, causing them to open wider and fill with blood. It is this increased blood flow that gets the penis to harden and enlarge.

Definition: Corpus Cavernosum: The inner shaft of the penis is divided into two side-by-side erectile tunnels. Together they make up the corpus cavernosum. Inside both tunnels is a spongy tissue that consists of smooth muscle and lots of blood vessels. It is these blood vessels that are responsible for creating an erection. They determine whether the erection is strong or weak, based on the amount of blood they receive and hold on to.

At the same time the blood vessels in the penis are filling up, the veins that carry blood away from the penis shut down, causing an increase in blood pressure that swells the penis and traps blood there. It is this trapped blood that keeps the penis hard and erect.

If the blood vessel walls in the penis become blocked with plaque and other organic debris, blood can’t get inside, and you won’t be able to have a full erection. The blood vessels in the penis are part of your body’s complex arterial system. That same system feeds your brain and heart and stomach—all parts of you. A blockage in brain arteries will lead to stroke and or Alzheimer’s. A blockage in the arteries feeding the heart will lead to angina and or heart attack. A blockage in stomach arteries will lead to incredible pain and digestion problems. And a blockage in the blood vessels of the penis will prevent full, or even any erection.

That’s why you find men with heart disease, Alzheimer’s, or other blockage disorders, who also can’t achieve erection. It’s not because the disease is causing the failure, but that all the conditions stem from the same cause—blockages within a closed arterial system. Problems getting and maintaining an erection also have little to do with age. Men are told that their reactions will take longer as they age. But this is true only because the older a man’s body gets, the more time has passed in which blockages can begin, accumulate, and decrease blood flow to the penis.

If you can eliminate the blockages preventing full and unfettered blood flow to the penis, you will eliminate most erectile dysfunction.

HOW DO BLOCKAGES FORM IN THE BODY?

When you eat something your body has trouble processing, like a double bacon cheeseburger with extra mayo, French fries, onion rings, and a deep fried Snickers bar, without also providing it with an emulsifier, it stores the left over gunk it can’t get rid of in all sorts of inner nooks and crannies. Just like you do in real life. But instead of a drawer, closet or garage, the body stores it in a number of places, including the arteries in your penis.

Blockages are a whole separate category of diseases unto themselves in my paradigm of wellness. Looking in from the outside, we may call it erectile dysfunction, but it’s actually a blockage masquerading as erectile dysfunction. It could also “pretend” to be Alzheimer’s, heart disease, lung congestion, or a stiff elbow joint. Your arterial pathways have to be kept clear or you will be at risk for many blockage diseases besides erectile dysfunction. But all of the blockage disorders, including erectile dysfunction can be treated successfully with Lecithin.

USING THE EMULSIFYING POWERS OF LECITHIN TO ENSURE FULL ERECTIONS WHENEVER AROUSAL IS PRESENT

Lecithin is a natural substance extracted from soybean oil. It is known to be safe, and has been used in our food supply since the early 1900’s. Take a look in your cabinets at the boxes, jars, cans, and bottles there. Lecithin is used as an ingredient in countless foods and cosmetics, because of its ability to emulsify, stabilize, thicken, and moisturize. It also has great suspension qualities.

Without Lecithin, when you opened a box of biscuit mix, it wouldn’t come out in a nice powdery stream, but would plop into your bowl with clumps. Without Lecithin, facial moisturizer wouldn’t be creamy and smooth, but would show the oils coagulated and greasy. Without Lecithin, mayonnaise would be a congealed mess, unspreadable. Likewise, peanut butter. Lecithin is what keeps ingredients in suspension, as a mixture, and keeps the oils from separating from the other ingredients.

It’s Lecithin’s ability to keep organic particles in suspension—and to break up those that have hardened into plaque—that makes it such a valuable food supplement. It does the same thing in your body as it does in the food container: keeps organic particles suspended, not allowing them to clump together. Each Lecithin molecule binds with an organic molecule and prevents it from joining with other similar molecules, by holding it in suspension while it travels through your body and is expelled. Without sufficient Lecithin in your system, oils, fats, and other organic compounds can clump together, solidify, clog up and cause blockages in vital areas, like the penis.

While Lecithin prevents blockages in the arteries that prevent sufficient blood flow from getting into the penis, two other supplements are important and should be added to the Lecithin therapy.

First is Rutin, one of the elements of the Vitamin C Complex. If you’re having problems getting full erections, you have to worry not only about blood getting into the penis, which Lecithin will solve, but also that it doesn’t leave the penis until you are finished. Rutin will strengthen the walls of the entire arterial system, including the veins that are supposed to shut down and trap blood in the penile blood vessels. If these vein walls are weak they can’t trap the blood, which will flow out of the penis prematurely, causing a loss of erection despite sufficient blood flow in.

Second is Gingko Biloba, an herb and a mild but effective natural blood thinner. It will help more blood get through the blockages while Lecithin is cleaning them out.

NOTES

► When you use Lecithin regularly, in the beginning you will notice other things happening because of its emulsifying abilities. It will clean out not just the arteries in the penis, but throughout the entire arterial system. You may notice that you are coughing up and blowing out of your nose a lot more mucous than usual, because that is one of the body’s channels for getting rid of waste. This is happening because Lecithin is breaking up blockages and causing the wastes to be expelled. This is a good sign and after a while, as more and more organic debris is cleaned out of your body this will end.

► I have recommended Puritan’s Pride brand because their Lecithin is from soybeans only, and contains a minimum of 732 mg of phosphatides in each 1200 mg softgel, equivalent to 61 percent phosphatides. The value of a Lecithin product is determined by the percentage of phosphatides it contains, because they activate the emulsifying process in your body. You may use another brand but make sure it conforms to or exceeds these specifications or it will not work.

Lecithin Granules are best used in blender drinks and sprinkled on salads, fresh cut fruit, and cereals. Make sure to consume it uncooked, in its natural state. One heaping tablespoon is equal to six softgels. You can’t take too much, so feel free to use additional amounts liberally.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Ginkgo Biloba is an effective natural blood thinner. If you are on a prescription blood thinner, like Coumadin, know that Ginkgo Biloba will duplicate your prescription medication.

ADULT ONSET, “NON-INSULIN DEPENDENT DIABETES,” IS CAUSED BY PERSONAL CHOICES, MEANING YOU CAN CHOOSE NOT TO HAVE IT

CATEGORIES: 1: Simple Malnutrition, 8: Exercise & Fitness, 10: Food & Diet

RECOMMENDED: Monavie Active, Increased Exercise, and Improved Diet

Definition: Insulin: It is a hormone produced by the pancreas, in order to digest and convert carbohydrates and starches into glucose (sugar) for energy use. Your blood sugar levels rise naturally while you digest a meal. When your body detects these increased levels of blood sugar, it is supposed to release insulin, which then moves the glucose out of the bloodstream and into the muscles and fat cells for storage. The sugar remains stored in the cell, until you need it for energy, say, to run a marathon, or pick up your clothes at the cleaners.

Type 1 diabetes was formerly known as juvenile diabetes, because it’s usually diagnosed in children and young adults. It stems from an impairment in the immune system. Only about 5 to 10 percent of reported cases are in this category, a comparatively small number. But a whopping 90 to 95 percent of people diagnosed with diabetes are Type 2, adult onset. Increasing the cringe factor is the news that of those numbers, most have this disease only because of unhealthy lifestyle choices. Meaning, Type 2 could be made obsolete in no time, if people made different and healthier choices.

Ordinarily, you end up with Type 2 after a lifetime of doing whatever you wanted to your body. You had no fear; you were carefree. You probably ate and drank what you liked without regard to nutrition or weight. Maybe spent too much time at the computer or big screen sitting on your butt. Likewise had no idea what the inside of a gym or health club looked like, or that the outdoors was good for more than passing through on your way from your house to your car.

Or maybe you had greater nutritional needs than average. But no one in your family understood, causing them to go unmet even as an adult. Maybe no one ever taught you how to eat in a balanced fashion, or that your body needs movement by way of exercise and activity in order to stay healthy and thrive. Whatever the cause, Type 2 diabetes is the result of chronic neglect that has caught up with you.

DIABETES OVERVIEW

Type 1 occurs when the immune system, embodied in the white blood cells, wrongly attacks the body’s own insulin producing cells, decimating their numbers and preventing them from making insulin. Think of it as friendly fire, as when troops mistake their own soldiers as the enemy and attack them. The result is high blood glucose (sugar) levels, which are treated with diet, blood monitoring, and insulin shots meant to replace the insulin from cells destroyed by the immune system.

Type 2 is something you do to yourself. It’s self inflicted. It’s not a gun to the head, but it’s a slower form of suicide that robs you of promised years. It’s caused by a metabolic malfunction arising from an unhealthy diet and no exercise, whereby the insulin cells that are produced by the pancreas are inferior, and therefore can’t remove enough glucose from the blood to keep you healthy. This is called “insulin resistance.” The result is high blood sugar levels, which are treated by diet changes and increased activity.

Nutrition is responsible for all functions inside your body, including making strong insulin cells and other replacement parts. If you have a Type 2 diagnosis, it means you have not given your body enough nutrition, so that now it can’t do things like it used to, like construct strong insulin cells.

Types 1 and 2 both result in elevated blood sugar levels and if not controlled can lead to heart attack, stroke, toe and limb amputation, kidney failure, and loss of eyesight, among other problems that will lead up to these events. But the edges between Type 1 and Type 2 start to blur when you examine them closely, especially in children. Type 2 used to be associated with middle age and the elderly. But how do we explain that children as young as 8 are presenting with, and dying from, Type 2 now? Or that countries normally associated with good eating habits, like Japan, showed Type 2 diabetes cases almost double in junior high school students, making it more prevalent than Type 1?

Dr. Francine Kaufman knows. She is the Director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Southern California Medical School. She reports that, “poor eating habits and lack of exercise—once the prerogative of older people in rich countries, but now almost a global phenomenon—are largely to blame for the rise of Type 2 Diabetes.”

So there you have it folks, your lousy diets are killing not just you adults, but now your children as well. Type 2 is a disease that arises due to a sedentary lifestyle, and a diet that, because it provides too much fat and not enough nutrition, leads to weight gain and obesity, which further exacerbates the Type 2 disorder. People who are overweight are more likely to have Type 2, because fat actually interferes with the body’s ability to use insulin.

A high fat diet stores too much fat inside your cells. It prevents your body from responding to the insulin it does manage to produce, because the fat is hogging all the space in the cell. Like a room, there is only so much space inside a cell. If it’s filled up with fat there is simply less space inside it to store glucose, no matter how hard your insulin works. It’s like having a private storage unit that’s filled up all the way to the door. There’s no room for that desk you want to store.

THE CORE ISSUE IN BOTH TYPES IS INSULIN

Without enough insulin in your bloodstream at all times, glucose builds up and remains there, instead of being moved into storage in your cells. This process of sugar being transported to, and stored in your cells, is what keeps you moving. When you run a race, or go to the cleaners, it’s the glucose energy stored in your muscle cells by insulin that keeps you moving. The body is unable to use glucose as a food for energy as long as the glucose is trapped inside the bloodstream. Glucose must be inside a cell in order for that cell, and therefore your body, to tap it for energy use. Insulin is the transportation system for glucose. It takes sugar out of the blood and into the cell.

Think of insulin as high speed rail taking workers from the outskirts into the center of town. If the rail system is working at peak effectiveness it will efficiently transport them. But let’s say the system gets bogged down and moves 25 percent less efficiently. What about 50 or 75 percent? What if the rails shut down and no trains move? In those cases, fewer and fewer workers would get to their jobs, until finally no one would. Likewise, if your insulin becomes less and less effective at taking sugar to work inside your cell, you will get a Type 2 diagnosis.

OBESITY AND TYPE 2 DIABETES

If too much glucose remains in your blood, you will feel unsatisfied no matter what or how much you eat. And you will gain weight despite your best efforts not to. Your body can’t burn off the sugar until it gets moved into the cells. When your cells don’t respond properly to the insulin, the pancreas tries to solve the problem by producing more and more insulin. These large amounts of insulin constrict your arteries and increase your chances of having a heart attack or stroke due to decreased blood flow. They stimulate your brain to make you hungry, even though you’ve taken in more than enough calories to fill your needs—making it almost impossible not to overeat. All because they cause fat, instead of glucose, to be stored in your cells.

If you’re overweight, the failure to store glucose in your fat-laden cells where it belongs is what makes you so tired all the time. The sugar your cells need for energy is trapped inside the bloodstream, of no use whatsoever because your cells can’t access it. That’s also why the first thing people say when they change their diets for the better is, “I have so much more energy now.” Of course. The healthier diet increases the efficiency of the insulin you’re producing. More glucose food energy gets stored in the cells because the fat has moved out to make room for it. Like maybe you removed something from that storage unit in order to make room for the desk. Once glucose is inside the cell, energy is then accessible to you when you need it to cross the finish line, or pick up the clothes.

MANITO S.

Manito was a 23 year old dancer and Cuban hunk when he immigrated to Miami in 1962. The trip was far from easy. He spent two days in a small boat with five other people; three men and two women. The boat started to leak and broke apart in a rogue wave. Two men and a woman were swept away and drowned. Manny, one woman, and the last man took turns lying on top of a piece of the wreckage, while the others held on to the sides. The curvature of the wood kept a pocket of air under it and made it more floatable. They stayed alive like that for two more days until they were picked up by a passing American fishing boat. They’d had no food or water for four days.

Manny loved the U.S. He got a job dancing in a nightclub and three years later he owned the place. Two years after that he added a small restaurant and populated the menu with his favorite dishes: achiote marinated chicken, veal scallops with bacon, roast suckling pig, deviled crab rolls, moros y christianos, criollo chicken and rice gumbo.

Manny ate at his own restaurant every night, even after he met and married Maria. She joined him in managing the business, handling the front end while he ran the kitchen and planned menus. It was a match made in heaven because Maria loved food as much as Manny. They grew successful together, and they grew fat together. All the more to love, they often told each other.

That is where Manny and Maria’s background tale ends for me. I don’t know what happened between that happy chronicle and the phone call I received from their daughter, Katrina, so many years later. I was running an experiment on the effects of Monavie Active on metabolism and Type 2 diabetes. Katrina contacted me online and then we spoke by phone. She told me her parents had separated, but both had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes a decade ago. The trial samples were free so I offered to enroll both Manny and Maria. Katrina said they didn’t want their mother in the trial, just their father.

That begged a “why not?” from me, and her answer gave me pause. Katrina said that if Monavie Active helped their dad’s glucose numbers, she and her brother, Marc, would order it for their mother on a long term basis. But they wouldn’t pay to have their father take it, even if it would save his life. Okay. But why not start both of them on it now instead of waiting to see what happens with your dad, I asked. She said they didn’t want me experimenting on their mother, but didn’t care what happened to him. “She could get hurt,” she said. I didn’t pursue it. I assumed Manny had earned his children’s wrath.

Manny and I started communicating by phone. I figured that if Monavie worked for him he would find some other way of paying for it. He was 73, maybe he had a pension. I asked him what was the biggest negative impact that Type 2 had had on his life. He didn’t mention the two missing toes, or the inability to walk more than a few feet at a time, the chronic infections, tingling extremities, debilitating fatigue, or loss of eyesight. He said it was not being able to walk his dog Georgi along the beach.

In the end there was good news and bad. The good news was that Monavie Active worked great for Manny. Normal blood glucose should fall between 70 and 120. Manny’s had been 565 at the start. After two weeks taking Monavie Active twice daily, Manny’s glucose dropped to 95, and he returned to walking Georgi. His physician was so impressed that he called me to get more information on just what Manito had been taking.

Katrina told me that the treatment also worked for Maria, who saw her numbers return to normal. But I’m sure you’ve already guessed the bad news. The kids ordered Monavie for Maria but not Manny. He asked me to talk to them because he didn’t want to go back to being sick. I told him I didn’t think it would do any good. A couple of weeks after he ran out of the sample, his blood glucose was sky high again.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP YOURSELF

You can easily turn things around by changing certain habits. You’ve heard it all before and it’s true. It’s all about choices. You don’t have to start living like a monk, but even a few changes will make a big difference in your health: Choose multi grain breads, cereals, and pastas instead of refined white. Substitute brown rice for white rice on occasion. Always eat something raw/fresh along with a cooked meal. Go completely vegetarian two days each week. When you eat meat, choose lean cuts. Try to avoid buying food in cans; make it a last resort choice. Keep frozen foods at a minimum; choose fresh as often as possible. Read the labels of foods you buy and avoid ones with too many additives. Don’t overeat; portion control is very important. Think about what you are putting in your mouth. Don’t assume because something is served to you that it’s really fit for your consumption.

In addition to the above, you have to get moving, literally. If you can’t afford a health club or gym membership, or don’t want others to see you exercising right away, then just start walking. Even if you only get to the end of your block on your first try, it’s a start. Try to go a little farther each time you walk, until you can do something substantial like two miles. And expect pain; some of your muscles have not been stressed in a long time. Pain is no reason to stop, unless it’s in your chest. Once you’ve built up your strength a little, try something harder, like swimming, or jogging, or free weights. Whatever appeals to you and gets your heart beating faster.

There is also a supplement that will make your life back to good health much easier. For most people with Type 2, Monavie Active can balance your metabolism and lower your glucose numbers in two to three weeks. It’s a juice combination with acai berry as the primary ingredient.

Consume everything, tiny chunks of puree, silt, etc. Take it first thing in the morning when you wake up, before you eat anything. Take your second dose about 20 minutes before you eat dinner. Do not miss a dose. If you forget, take it as soon as you remember.

NOTES

► If you are taking a prescription for Type 2 diabetes, you have to be watchful as you take Monavie Active. Be aware that while it is a simple combination of juices, it is powerful and effective. The chances are 95 percent that it will remove the need for your medicine, because it will bring your glucose under control and balance your metabolism.

► Monavie Active costs about $150 a month to take as prescribed here. If you cannot afford it you will have to pay strict attention to your dietary restrictions to bring and keep your glucose numbers within normal range.

POTASSIUM IODIDE IS NOT WHAT YOU NEED TO PROTECT YOURSELF

CATEGORY: 2: Inflammation

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENT: Beta Carotene

In speaking to parliament recently, the Prime Minister of Japan said that his country’s biggest crises in decades was the combination of the quake, tsunami, and nuclear accident.

radiation hazard symbol

You can rebuild after a quake brings down a bridge. You can clean up, dry out, and rebuild after a tsunami. But a nuclear accident is harder to “fix,” and has the potential to greatly endanger areas far away from the original accident. Time magazine reported that trace radioactive elements from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant traveled over 6,500 miles to show up in rainwater that fell on Boston. Since global winds move from the west toward the east, those radioactive traces had to cross a lot of America before they got to Boston, and kept going.

The planet is smaller than we want to think. And we are all sharing it with each other, despite our claims to sovereignty. International borders didn’t stop the trace elements from crossing America to rain down on Boston. We share the same sun, the same water, and the same air, ultimately. It is entirely legitimate, then, that people on the other side of the world from the accident are worried about radiation poisoning.

The biggest concern associated with radiation poisoning seems to be cancer of the thyroid, which people think can be prevented by taking potassium iodide. Directly after the reactor explosions, sales of potassium iodide soared, and many online websites sold out. Unfortunately, potassium iodide cannot be relied on to protect against thyroid cancer, especially not in the dosages available without a prescription. And you’re fooling yourself if you think there aren’t 20 to 30 other easy spots in your body, besides the thyroid, where radiation poisoning can and will cause inflammation and cancer.

Apparently, the association in the public consciousness between the thyroid and potassium iodide stems from the use of radioactive iodine to treat goiters, a disorder of the thyroid.

Definition: Goiter: This is an enlargement of the thyroid gland that looks like a round lump that continues to grow if not treated. It is usually caused by a lack of iodine, which is necessary to produce thyroid hormone. The great lakes and Midwest areas of the United States were once called the “goiter belt,” because of the high number of cases reported there that were attributable to iodine poor soil. A goiter grows because the thyroid gland is trying harder and harder to extract iodine from your body. As it works harder, it continues to grow bigger. A goiter usually indicates a simple Kelp deficiency, as Kelp is a great source of natural iodine. A friend was scheduled for radioactive iodine treatment to reduce a goiter. I convinced him to postpone treatment and try Kelp. A month later the goiter was gone.

To protect yourself from radiation poisoning you have to understand what’s happening in your body, your whole body not just your thyroid. Every part of you is composed of cells. High radiation exposure destroys cellular integrity everywhere on a gargantuan scale, breaking apart electrons, and setting loose a cataclysmic amount of free radicals. It is free radicals that harm the thyroid and other parts of your body after radiation exposure. And potassium iodide does nothing to prevent or neutralize free radicals. Nothing.

Too many free radicals are what lead first to inflammation and then cause cancer—in the thyroid, yes, but also in the breasts, liver, lungs, prostate, stomach, kidney, uterus—in short, anywhere and everywhere in your body. Not just your thyroid is at risk when you are exposed to radiation; your entire body is put at risk. Take potassium iodide if you wish, but it’s more important to focus on antioxidants, the most potent and effective of which is Beta Carotene.

Tips: Please take the time to read Blog 3: The Danger of Inflammation, for a discussion of how free radicals are created, and why antioxidants work so well to neutralize them. I went into great detail that I don’t want to repeat every time I discuss inflammation. There is also a list of foods high in antioxidants that you should add to your diet, immediately, if you can.  Please also read Blog 4, Cancer, to learn how that same inflammation therapy stops cancer’s growth anywhere in the body. Even after you have been diagnosed. If you get the bad news, just buck up and get busy with Beta Carotene. This is a fight you can win.

RADIATION EXPOSURE FROM A LONG DISTANCE

I was on the west coast of America at the time of Japan’s nuclear accident. Up and down the coast everyone was worried about possible radiation exposure, despite assurances from officials that trace radiation couldn’t travel as far as the United States. After checking the umbrellas in Boston however, we now know that wasn’t true.

Since the core issue here is the creation of excess free radicals from radiation exposure, the focus should be on consumption of enough antioxidants to counter those free radicals, one on one. Each free radical electron needs an antioxidant electron to neutralize it and return it to healthy cell status. There is no better antioxidant for this purpose than Beta Carotene.

UP CLOSE AND EXTENSIVE RADIATION EXPOSURE

If you were close to the explosion, meaning anywhere in Japan, you need to do more internal repair than those at a long distance. But regardless of the size or magnitude of your exposure, even if you’re one of the workers who had to go inside the reactor to contain the matter, large quantities of Beta Carotene will protect you and prevent cancer and ultimate organ failure.

Free radicals are what you have to worry about from radiation exposure, no matter the amount. But free radicals are all you really have to worry about. If you can handle and control the free radical production in your body, you can handle radiation exposure. But the greater the exposure to radiation, the higher will be the number of free radicals created, and the more antioxidants that will be needed.

Let’s look at the situation for what it is, a battle between your troops (antioxidants), and the enemy troops (free radicals). (My father was career Army so expect of lot of battle references in my blogs.) Pretend that the day of retribution has come. Your troops are about to enter the battlefield to wage war against your biggest enemy—the slayer of your family, friends, and future—high level, radiation-based cancer.

You have good intelligence that there are 1000 free radical troops on the field awaiting you, and another 1000 in a fallback position, ready to back them up. But for now, you are facing only 2000 free radical enemy troops, because they haven’t had a chance to increase their numbers yet. You are tasked with eradicating them before they can multiply and get strong enough to do real harm. You aren’t worried, because you have over 5000 antioxidant troops under your command ready to deploy. And you know that for every enemy free radical, you have to deploy an opponent antioxidant warrior, because it will always boil down mathematically to a one on one fight. Antioxidant electron against free radical electron.

Given these facts, what do you do tactically? Do you decide to just lay down and not fight back at all? Probably not. Knowing it’s a one on one fight, do you send in 50 of your antioxidant warriors to face 2000 free radical troops? What about 500? Again, probably not. With 5000 antioxidant troops at your disposal, you might not even send in an equal number of 2000 troops to match the enemy’s numbers. To ensure success in such an important battle you might try to outnumber the enemy; you might send in all 5000 antioxidant troops and make it a slaughter. With your superior numbers, the options are all yours to exercise.

If you were in Japan at the time of the exposure, or worse, close to the point of origin, there are tens of thousands of free radicals ganging up inside you and starting the inflammation process, which will be followed eventually by cancer, or some other inflammatory based disease. The minute you were hit with radiation, your cells began to die and mutate into free radicals—throughout your entire body not just in your thyroid. Since there are so many free radical troops wreaking havoc inside, you need an equal or higher number of antioxidant troops to fight them off, to neutralize them. Beta Carotene is the best free radical fighting antioxidant available, if you take enough of it.

I prescribe large doses of Beta Carotene for an extended period to give the body time to neutralize enough free radicals to prevent serious long-term harm from occurring. Don’t let the following dose levels scare you. The doses have to be large enough to counter the large number of free radicals loosed in your system. Beta Carotene will not harm you, and could save your life.

NOTES

► If you take Beta Carotene without also taking Vitamin D, you will deplete your stores of Vitamin D and develop a Vitamin D deficiency. It usually manifests as sores on the inside of the mouth. Always take Vitamin D when you take Beta Carotene.

► Do not use mixed carotenoid products. They are only a marketing gimmick and will not work the way Beta Carotene will, not the way I have described here.

Vitamin D3 is recommended because it more closely replicates the Vitamin D made naturally on your skin from contact with the sun. But if you can’t find D3, take straight Vitamin D.

Helen’s labor started at three in the morning. At first she thought it was just the extra spicy hot wings flapping through her intestines, but quickly realized what was happening. She woke her husband with an elbow in the ribs. Rick, thinking she did it because he was snoring again, burrowed into the pillow and tried to breathe quietly. The second poke annoyed him. He burped and turned over, eyes bleary with sleep, saying, “Hey, did you notice I stopped snoring?” Helen said, “Hey, did you notice I’m going into labor?”

couple in silouette at sunset

Two hours later Dr. Sajim stood in front of Helen with a frown on his narrow face. The hallway was quiet an hour before the hospital shift change. The smell of disinfectant coated the air. Rick had meandered off looking for a vending machine. He needed a Pepsi so he could take a Valium. No liquid and it would stick to his tongue. Same thing with water. Seems he needed the Pepsi as bad as he needed the Valium.

“You’re having a pretty bad genital herpes outbreak, Helen,” said Dr. Sajim. “Luckily, this time it was false labor. Otherwise, I would have had to do a Cesarean. I know you’re planning on going back to modeling after the baby. But I can’t let you deliver normally if you’re having an outbreak. I’m sorry, but as I’ve told you, herpes can be passed to your newborn during delivery. So we cannot take that chance, can we?”

Helen was already in her 40th week and due to deliver any minute. Dr. Sajim’s words nagged at her all the next day. She was more worried about her modeling career than she let anyone know. At 35 she was closer to the end of her swimsuit career than the beginning. A Cesarean scar would slam that door shut immediately. And no, they wouldn’t go to the trouble of retouching all her shots. She couldn’t turn to runway—the kindest thing Antonio had said was she walked like a librarian—though she did have other options. She just needed time to transition.

When she called me the next day, she was crying. She was afraid to take a prescription drug, fearing it might harm the baby. And over the counter remedies didn’t work. She wanted to know if there was a supplement therapy that would work. Stop the herpes without harming the baby. And known to be safe enough that Dr. Sajim would be ok with her taking it.

I told her about L-Lysine, an amino acid capable of actually disrupting the herpes virus’ DNA replication cycle, preventing it from spawning more and more generations, with each one making the outbreak worse. I told her it is completely safe even for expectant mothers close to their time of delivery.

There are different kinds of herpes viruses, but all of them can be controlled with L-Lysine. Below I discuss Types 1, 2, and 4. [Types 3 and 5 herpes viruses are equine related, and refer to a sexually transmitted disease in horses.] [See Comment on HIV/AIDS under Type 4.]

1.         Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV1): Oral Herpes: HSV1 usually manifests as blisters and ulcers around the mouth and lips, commonly called fever blisters and cold sores. But they can occur in other places above the waist, like the chin and face, inside your mouth or the back of the throat, or on your chest and arms.

Type 1 is usually associated only with mouth herpes, but it also causes genital herpes when it is spread during mouth-genital sex by a partner with an infected mouth.

About 50 to 80 percent of American adults have HSV1, even if they don’t know it. One reason so many are carriers is that herpes is a member of the same family of diseases experienced in childhood, like mumps, or chicken pox.

For instance, the latter is caused by Herpes Zoster which goes dormant after the initial outbreak, but can show up later in adulthood as shingles, a painful skin disorder. If you had one of these childhood diseases you are carrying the herpes virus and can infect others, even if you have never had an outbreak.

2.         Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV2): Genital Herpes: HSV2 usually manifests as painful blisters, ulcers, and rashes around the genital and anal areas. It rarely affects areas above the waist, like the mouth and face. It is spread through sexual intercourse by secretions from the mouth and genitals of an infected partner, even if they have no signs and don’t know they are infected. For example, in a study, a third of the participants who caught genital herpes from their infected partners, did so when the partners had no symptoms. Sexual contact is the most common way to become infected, and one in five Americans has genital herpes, again, even if they are unaware of it.

Genital herpes seems to be on the rise, especially among adolescents, because they’re having more oral sex instead of intercourse, believing it to be safer, or more moral. The only safe thing about oral sex is that it absolutely avoids pregnancy. But you’re still susceptible to an STD when you give or receive oral sex. Thus, there are more and more people with cold sores on their genitals, which translates as genital herpes.

3.         Herpes Simplex Virus Type 4 (HSV4): Epstein Barr: HSV4 is best known for causing Infectious Mononucleosis, the “Kissing Disease” we all remember from high school. It is also linked with certain forms of cancer, like Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Burkitt’s lymphoma, and central nervous system lymphomas associated with HIV.

Comment: HIV/AIDS: For a long time I have had a theory I’ve never been able to test. I believe strongly that I am right, but if I am wrong, it will be the first time. I think that the body looks at HIV/AIDS as just another virus. I think L-Lysine is effective enough, against all types of herpes, as well as all strains of flu, to warrant a closer look by health professionals and those with the disease. I would love to hear from someone with HIV/AIDS who would be willing to try the L-Lysine therapy under my supervision. You can contact me at lynn@lynncapehart.com.

One spot of good news is that since the virus dies quickly outside the body, it is next to impossible to get genital herpes through contact with toilet seats, towels, or other objects used by an infected person having an outbreak. The number of people with herpes will probably keep rising as people continue to infect one another. But the high cost and side effects of prescription drugs cause many people to avoid using them. L-Lysine is a natural alternative treatment that is safe, inexpensive and gentle to the body. It works faster and better than any other treatment available, bar none.

L-Lysine works quickly to suppress a herpes outbreak on the same day, usually within hours if taken as directed. Chronic cases can be controlled and all outbreaks prevented by taking a daily maintenance dose, and increasing the dose at the first signs of an outbreak, that first tell tale tingle that usually precedes an outbreak.

I have a friend, Gene, in his second year at UCLA. He gets cold sores all the time. He started using L-Lysine and found it worked, but he refused to use it regularly, as a maintenance dose. He’s a free spirit and doesn’t like the routine involved in daily doses. So he takes it only when he feels an outbreak coming on, despite my promise to him that a daily dose will completely prevent even one more cold sore. His problem is that sometimes an outbreak happens when he’s away from his supplements. Gene experienced this a couple of hours before a date recently. Later that evening, he and a coed were keeping each other warm, when she spotted an emerging cold sore and called things off. He said he was amazed he got that far with her before she noticed. I think that last “miss” might convince him to go ahead and take a regular daily dose of L-Lysine. Your body’s warning plus your timely response can equal prevention.

HERPES: Types 1, 2, and 4 Quick Glance Chart
Supplement At First Sign of Outbreak Every 4 Hours While Awake As Long As You Have Symptoms Twice Daily For Five Days After Symptoms Are Gone Brand Strength
L-Lysine 3 tablets 2 tablets 2 tablets Puritan’s Pride #6011 1000 mg
MAINTENANCE DOSE: To ensure that you don’t get any herpes, take two tablets of L-Lysine twice daily, morning and evening, every single day.
If your symptoms do not get better, or if they return after you lower your dosage at any time, increase the dose back up to where it gave you relief, or higher if necessary. It is important that you continue daily doses for the minimum time period mentioned. You will feel better, and your symptoms may all be gone, but the virus is still raging in there. It takes the extra doses to make sure you send it into dormancy again. If you do not, the outbreak will return. You have to kill the current generation and several that will follow before you can be sure it will go dormant.

NOTES

► The virus is fighting for its life as hard as you would for yours. It’s replicating new generations to ensure the survival of its DNA—just like you do. For those reasons, I can’t overemphasize how important it is that you flood your system with L-Lysine in order for it to work effectively as a treatment for herpes. You have to follow the quick glance chart and take every dose on time, and not miss a single dose.

► Be aware that after taking L-Lysine for a while your bowel movements may be runny. This is not true diarrhea. You won’t move your bowels more than normal, but when you do they might become watery. This is not a cause for concern and will stop as soon as you lower your dose.

► If you know you have been exposed to herpes by an infected person, or if you know that you have had one of the viral childhood diseases like chickenpox, it is recommended that you take 2000 mg of L-Lysine twice daily, morning and evening, as a maintenance dose, to help keep the virus dormant.

► Since it is possible to have herpes and not know it, if you do suddenly get an outbreak, take a pause and a deep breath before you accuse your partner of wrong doing. If there is other evidence maybe you’re onto something. If she or he is a saint, do some more investigating before you jump them. Herpes can lie dormant for years after initial infection before it shows up. It could have been an earlier partner who infected you.

tooth brushing

I don’t like mean people. They bring out the nasty avenger in me, so I try to avoid them. Many times I have witnessed these cruel ones use the accusation of “bad breath” just to hurt someone’s feelings. Even when it’s not true! There is actually a medical term for people who were teased or bullied or otherwise made to believe they have persistent bad breath, when in fact they do not. It’s called Halitophobia, or Delusion Halitosis. So don’t believe just anyone who tells you this. Believe it only if it comes from a reliable source, like a good friend, immediate family member, or health care provider.

But what if it’s true? What if you have good reason to believe that your breath is even slightly offensive day to day? If so, it can be a real confidence killer. Can cause you to withdraw from social situations, surrender your poise, and be less successful than you can be—because of that lingering doubt. The good news is that supplements and good dental habits can eliminate and control this problem.

Oral health care providers believe that nearly 85 to 90 percent of ordinary, occasional bad breath originates in the mouth due to consuming certain foods. But Halitosis is not the same as the smell of garlic on your breath from last night’s pasta e fagioli, or the onions you had on your salad for lunch. Or the occasional dry mouth day when your breath could be fresher, but can’t be said to smell bad. Halitosis is persistent, there all the time, and can get as bad as the smell of rotten eggs.

Tip: Eat All The Onion You Want: Your breath won’t smell it if you eat a fist-full of curly parsley afterward. Chew it well and slowly so the chlorophyll has time to do its magic in your mouth. Some people say this works on garlic too, but I have not found that to be the case. Nothing seems to disguise having eaten fresh garlic.

According to dentists and hygienists, there are many things that go wrong in the mouth that can contribute to persistent bad breath. The most common causes are a poorly cleaned tongue, which accounts for the largest percentage of mouth related bad breath, and the mouth itself, where the failure to brush properly and floss regularly permit microscopic bits of rotting food to accumulate between teeth, and in the niches between teeth and gums.

Over 600 kinds of bacteria live in the average human mouth, though not all of them cause bad breath, and some are even necessary for good dental health. But to ensure fresh breath you have to reduce the level of bacteria in the mouth by properly cleaning your teeth and tongue.

BRUSHING YOUR TEETH PROPERLY

Dentists recommend brushing a minimum of two minutes. Most people try hard to do this for the whole two minutes. My electric toothbrush has a timer that beeps when two minutes are up, indicating that I have passed my recommended brushing time.

This is crazy. If you want to ensure fresh breath you have to brush a lot longer than two measly minutes. Adults have approximately 32 teeth. All of them have two or more surfaces that need to be cleaned. That’s a potential of over 80 separate surfaces. If you follow conventional advice and brush for only two minutes, 120 seconds, you spend only 1.5 seconds per surface, or 3 to 4.5 seconds per tooth. That’s not enough, especially if you’re worried about your breath.

I brush my teeth in the morning with an electric toothbrush for about 15 minutes. It may sound like a lot, but that’s only about 10 seconds per surface, plus 20 seconds to clean and rinse my tongue. In the evening I brush with a manual toothbrush for about 5 minutes. My hygienist never fails to mention how clean my teeth are, and how easy it is for her to do the cleaning. I’m not saying you have to brush 15 minutes with an electric toothbrush. I don’t know, maybe that’s excessive. But try to brush at least 5 minutes, regardless of the toothbrush; that’s around 10 seconds per tooth.

While brushing your teeth is important for fresh breath, more mouth odor starts on the tongue than on the teeth.

CLEANING YOUR TONGUE

When you finish brushing your teeth, your work isn’t over. You still have to clean your tongue where 80 percent of malodorous mouth smells originate. Without proper cleaning, the tongue becomes coated with microscopic bits of food that you ate. You wake up each day with morning breath and a white coating on your tongue, due to your body using the mouth as a way to excrete toxins and wastes. Make no mistake. That white coating on your tongue is waste matter and needs to be removed. Preferably before you eat breakfast, so you don’t swallow the waste along with your food, and reintroduce the toxins to your system.

If you don’t clean your tongue every time you brush your teeth, more and more organic detritus piles up every time you eat. It festers and the bacteria happily feed on it. Remember that great Thai meal you had last week? Well, if you don’t clean your tongue each time you brush, some of it is still hanging around in there. This supply of rotting matter supports myriad populations of bacteria on the tongue, and the combination can ruin your dreams of fresh breath.

You don’t need a special instrument to clean your tongue, though many people prefer to use one. You can use a junior size, soft bristle manual toothbrush reserved for this purpose only. [Do not use an electric toothbrush for this, as it is too harsh for the tongue.]

Do not use the old toothpaste left from brushing your teeth to clean your tongue. After you brush your teeth, rinse your mouth as usual. Add a dab of fresh toothpaste on your special brush. Run warm water over it. Get it foamy by brushing your front teeth for two seconds. Then brush your tongue for 15 seconds, with short, gentle but firm strokes, front, middle, and sides, and as far back as you can go without gagging, which is about one half to two-thirds of the way.

Do not try to brush past a point of comfort. After you spit and rinse, hold your toothbrush under cold water. Use the cold water on the brush to scrub the toothpaste and any residual coating off your tongue. Do this cold water rinse a couple times. Compare the way your tongue looks now with the way it looked before you cleaned it. Big difference, right?

Note to singers: some of you come on camera dressed to kill, and singing like some wonder from another planet. But when you open your mouth wide to hit those high notes the camera gets a really good look at your tongue. So maybe you should too, before you sing.

FLOSSING IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO FRESH BREATH

Besides brushing well and cleaning your tongue, you have to floss as well. If you don’t you will lose teeth. Above I mentioned that microscopic bits of rotting food accumulate between teeth, and in the niches between teeth and gums if you don’t floss. This causes a continual odor in your mouth. After a while the food forms a hard plaque. The plaque accumulates, opening a pocket, forcing the gum away from the tooth. Eventually, the tooth loosens and falls out, or has to be pulled. This can happen to all your teeth, and the process causes ongoing and persistent bad breath.

By flossing you can clean below the gum line between teeth, as well as the sides of each tooth that you can’t reach otherwise, and prevent this plaque buildup.

You’re supposed to floss daily, but you can cheat here by keeping with you a pack of “The Doctor’s Brushpicks, Interdental Toothpicks.” (Brushpicks.com) One end is shaped like a regular toothpick, but has ridges for scrubbing between teeth; the other end has stiff hair like projections that are perfect for flossing below the gum line between teeth. Use these to clean between your teeth after every meal. And floss for real as often as you can.

Also, try to see a hygienist at least twice a year and have annual checkups at your dentist.

OTHER CAUSES OF BAD BREATH BESIDES MOUTH AND TONGUE

Occasional bad mouth odor and Halitosis can come from causes not directly related to the mouth, tongue or gums. In the nose, an impacted or infected sinus, or post nasal drip can cause unpleasant breath. Putrefaction can develop in tonsils and cause a terrible stink in the mouth. All sorts of hideous things can happen in the esophagus, the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach, to cause bad breath, including a poor fitting cardia valve, or a diverticulum. Other general causes cited are obesity, poor digestion, chronic constipation, smoking cigarettes, or drinking alcohol.

Definition: Cardia Valve: This is the valve between the stomach and the esophagus, which is supposed to close tightly to keep foul smelling gases from leaving the stomach and returning the wrong way, back up into the esophagus, causing persistent bad odors in the mouth.
Definition: Diverticulum: This is a hernia through the muscle wall of a tubular organ, where a small section of the wall balloons out, forming a bubble. In the esophagus, it can result in persistent bad breath due to rotting food bits that get caught in the bubble.

Halitosis affects one in five people in varying degrees, and besides your tongue and mouth, is also caused by your body’s long term inability to efficiently remove waste matter. It comes from diet, and how well you digest and assimilate food. Therefore, further steps must be taken to clean up Halitosis, in addition to having good dental hygiene.

If you opened the door to a closet or a refrigerator, or pulled out a drawer in your kitchen, or removed a sock from your foot, or lifted the lid from a garbage can, and a hideous stench wafted up your nostrils, you would immediately conclude that something needed cleaning. Same with the human body. If you have bad breath you have to cleanse your whole body, and take steps to ensure that it remains clean. Then you won’t have to worry about your breath ever again, except for the occasional pasta e fagioli.

Chlorophyll Concentrate, Activated Charcoal, Aloe Vera Gel Liquid and the one day fasts are recommended to actually clean out various areas of your body, and prevent odors that are expelled through your mouth. Betaine Hydrochloride, which is a supplemental form of stomach acid, is recommended for better digestion, ensuring that your food will be adequately digested before it leaves your stomach. You don’t want any big chunks hanging around too long in your intestines, stinking up the place. (For that same reason, remember to chew your food well in order to properly prepare it for digestion, before it hits your stomach.) L-Cysteine, Lecithin, and C Complex assist with after-cleanse waste removal.

LIQUID FASTS will help cleanse your entire system of the toxins that cause bad breath. For the first month, fast one day a week. After the first month you can cut back to one fast per month for the next six months.► This is an entire 24-hour-plus period. You wake up on fast day, consume only liquids for the whole day, go to sleep, then wake up and break your fast. If you fast Saturday, you will eat nothing from Friday night until Sunday morning. Go easy on your stomach for your first meal.► Alternate drinking 8 ozs of carrot juice with your juice(s) of choice. Drink the 8 ozs every hour, at the same time each hour, for 10 hours. For instance, if you drink 8 ozs of carrot juice at 8:30 a.m., at 9:30 you might have a tomato juice, then 10:30 carrot juice again. 11:30 maybe pineapple, 12:30 carrot, and so forth. You will continue every hour like this, with your last drink at 5:30 p.m. You may continue until a later cut off time if you wish.► You may use heated vegetable or chicken broth in place of any alternate juice, but not the carrot. Sip the juice or broth. Don’t gulp it down. In addition to the juices and broths, you may drink as much water as you like.► It is not a good idea to fast on a work day. After several hours of drinking juice you may start to feel really tired, exhausted even. If you are able, don’t fight it. Go to bed. Many people experience a long and restful sleep after a fast day, and wake up feeling exhilarated.► If you drink on time exactly, like you’re supposed to, your hunger will decrease and disappear after a few hours. If you miss your feeding, your appetite will rage. If hunger becomes unbearable at any time, you may munch on a handful of almonds (salted or unsalted, and not the whole bag, please). But eat no other food on your fast day. Your goal is to have nothing but liquids for a whole day.► Under NO circumstances should you fast without drinking liquids other than water. Fasting doesn’t mean you provide no nutrition to your body.► Take no supplements while you are fasting, but continue with the supplements once you are eating again.
OTHER FOOD CONSIDERATIONS► Eat a green-leaf salad at least once a day. It must contain a good amount of parsley, but no meat. Cheese is okay, but not croutons. Dress the salad only with vinaigrette and your choice of spices. Add any additional raw vegetables you wish—carrot, tomato, cucumber, etc. Add nothing to the salad that has been cooked. “Pasta salads,” or “bean salads” do not qualify.► Eat one small, raw apple daily.
Definition: Vitamin C Complex: It contains Vitamin C (as Rosehips and/or Ascorbic Acid) plus Rutin, Citrus Bioflavonoids, Hesperidin Complex, and Acerola. Puritan’s Pride also adds Alfalfa and Barley Grass to its C Complex. (If you can’t find C Complex, use straight C.)

NOTES

► You can take Betaine Hydrochloride even if you have acid reflux. In fact, Betaine Hydrochloride is what I recommend for that condition, which is actually caused by not enough acid present in the stomach, not too much.

STOPPING MS BEFORE IT DISABLES IS EASY, BUT THE LONGER YOU WAIT THE HARDER IT BECOMES

RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENT: Monavie Active

Definition: Multiple Sclerosis: The words Sclerosis and Cirrhosis are used interchangeably. Both terms mean “scarring” due to chronic inflammation. For instance, Cirrhosis of the Liver is scarring of the liver. Multiple Sclerosis, then, is “multiple scarring,” on nerve endings throughout the central nervous system. It is called “multiple scarring,” because it occurs in so many places within your brain and spinal cord. The scarring, which worsens with each MS flare up, first interrupts and later destroys the ability of the nerve cells to communicate with each other. This inability to relay messages due to excess scarring is what causes MS and all of its symptoms.

When I finished graduate school and fled Ann Arbor’s fierce weather, I promised myself I would never set eyes on another snow flake. I headed for the warmest spot I could afford, southern California, where for months I squandered most of my waking hours in cutoffs and a red bikini top, on the sands of Pacific Beach and La Jolla. My classmates were dutifully cramming for the licensing exam, but I feared that hearing even one more citation, anybody vs. anybody, would cause my head to detonate.

THE CASE OF HAROLD F.

I clocked in at the beach like I worked there, and started noticing the same people. Harold was out of place so he interested me right away. He was the only man on the beach everyday sporting a shirt and tie. Small, 45, with an icy sense of humor, he walked with two canes, and swore in Yiddish when he was tickled, tricked, or ticked. He wouldn’t discuss what he’d said later, just dust you off with, “Agh, you wouldn’t understand.” Locals hung around him like he was Fonzie. They weren’t real friends, just oiled beach bums trolling for free food and drinks. Harold always paid for the party.

Harold had MS but pretended he didn’t, and like true comrades under the sun, so did all us hangers on. He could walk only a few yards, even with the canes, before he had to stop and rest, exertion glistening his face, and sprouting wet half moons under his arms, while he acted like nothing was wrong. He would pretend he had stopped to appreciate something unique about the environment, the weather, architecture, or a person who just passed by. We would play along, talk about it until he caught his breath, regained his gait. When he crept forward so did we, looking like an ambitious amoeba, as if this pace were the most natural thing in the world.

I admired Harold’s courageous aspect on his disease, pretending his MS didn’t exist, when all his family wanted was him safe at home in a wheelchair. I witnessed an episode when his son, Steve, a newly minted lawyer, came to Rick’s American Café in PB to convince him to stop hanging out at the beach with a bunch of losers. And saying it right in front of said losers too. Harold reverted to Yiddish after that, so I don’t know what he told his son. But the lawyer blinked three times, stood up, and walked away without saying another word. I assumed Harold told him something like, he wasn’t going quietly into the darkness that awaited him.

Harold was diagnosed with MS at 31, and had continual flare-ups since then. In the beginning, after each episode, he got better as if nothing were wrong, until one day the disease progressed without abating. He had trouble understanding how MS could rob him of fine motor control for days, weeks, or months, only to wake up one morning feeling fine again. The explanation is that it takes repeated inflammation flare ups before the scarring is bad enough to cut off communication between the nerves. Meaning that you can feel perfectly normal in the beginning between flare ups.

MS can strike at any age, but is usually diagnosed between 20 and 40. It is a disease of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord; sometimes the optic nerve is affected too), and affects more women than men. It is an auto immune disorder because it’s the body’s own immune system that triggers the episodes of inflammation. The triggered inflammation leads to scarring of the myelin sheath, cuts off nerve communication, and causes MS and its symptoms.

Definition: Myelin Sheath: This is a protective covering wrapped around each nerve ending in your central nervous system. Nerve cells talk to each other and relay messages by sending electrical signals along their axons, which are long thin fibers, with their tips wrapped in insulation called myelin.

MOVEMENT AND MS

When you decide to walk across the room to play a DVD, the nerve cells in your brain and spinal cord have to do a lot of communicating to get the job done. A limited sample: You have to (1) lift your body up from the sofa, which involves feet, legs, arms, neck, and back muscles, (2) coordinate your arms and legs to get across the room, while keeping your head steady on your neck, and not losing your balance and toppling over, (3) remain standing upright while you brain goes through a complex series of actions to decide which movie to choose, (4) coordinate your shoulders, arms, and fingers to remove the DVD from the case and insert it into the player, (5) use almost all of your muscles to turn your body, return to the sofa, and enjoy the movie.

MS affects the ability of the nerve cells in your brain and spinal cord to communicate with each other the way they had to in order to get that movie playing. When a message (electrical impulse) gets to one nerve’s myelin wrapped end, it has to jump a gap between itself and the next nerve fiber so the message can continue along the axons. Remember the way Sandra Bullock’s character propelled the bus over the gap in the highway in the movie Speed? That’s what the signals in your brain and spinal cord have to do to complete their communication. They have to jump gaps in the line, like the bus did.

When your immune system attacks nerve cells in the central nervous system, it triggers inflammation on the myelin insulation. Once that particular flare up of inflammation has healed, and the process repeats itself over and over, the myelin wrapped nerve ending develops sclerosis/scarring, and can no longer transmit to or receive messages from other axons. When enough nerve endings have shut down from scarring, you won’t be able to get off that sofa, or on to it for that matter, without assistance.

DIFFERENT FORMS OF MS

There are different forms of MS: The first is relapse form, like Harold had in the beginning, where the symptoms come and go, and you appear to get better after each attack; and progressive form, where the disease hits you and gets worse without ever seeming to go away, which Harold had in the end. Both forms cause permanent neurological problems as the disease advances, even if they are not noticeable for a long time. That’s why it’s important to stop MS in its early stages before too much scarring has occurred, which may be irreversible.

To treat MS we have to get to the core problem, which is calming down the immune system so that it stops attacking the body it is supposed to protect. For that reason I recommend Monavie Active to stop and control MS. It is a combination juice drink with Acai Berry as its main component. Currently, a month’s supply costs approximately $150; that’s one bottle per week. Nothing works better on immune disorders than Monavie Active. Nothing. And it will control your MS. The first chart below tells you how to take it and gives you a link to Monavie to order it.

The second chart tells you how to use less expensive supplement therapy to control MS if you cannot afford Monavie Active.

STOPPING AND CONTROLLING MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS WITH MONAVIE ACTIVE Quick Glance Chart

Monavie Active is dense and delicious, and appears to have silt and sediment in it. Make sure you shake it well, but do not discard anything that comes out of the bottle. Consume everything, tiny chunks, silt, etc. Try to take it first thing in the morning when you wake up, and about 20 minutes before you eat dinner. Some people prefer to take the second dose right before they go to bed, saying it also helps them sleep better

If you can’t afford Monavie Active, you can control your MS with supplement therapy. They will work, but it’s not as easy as just sipping a great tasting juice twice daily.

Bee Pollen is the main supplement to balance and calm down your immune system. (If the above dosage does not control your MS, add a third dose of Bee Pollen and Vitamin C Complex at lunch time. Bee Pollen will not harm you so feel free to take as much as you need to control your MS.) Vitamin C Complex assists Bee Pollen in its calming function. Beta Carotene stops the inflammation response to the auto immune trigger. Vitamin D3 helps Beta Carotene in its inflammation fighting function.

Definition: Bee Pollen Complex: It contains Bee Pollen, Bee Propolis, and Royal Jelly. (If you can’t find Bee Pollen Complex, use straight Bee Pollen.)

NOTES

► Remember, these are not pills you’re taking, but concentrated food supplements. This isn’t medicine. It’s nutrition.

► If you take Beta Carotene without also taking Vitamin D, you will deplete your stores of Vitamin D and develop a Vitamin D deficiency. It usually manifests as sores on the inside of the mouth. Always take Vitamin D when you take Beta Carotene.
